Chapter 28

Leonidas continued, still smiling. "I'm more like a guardian of the animal kingdom, here to protect and preserve all the creatures of the world."

Celeste and Markus exchanged a glance, still not quite sure what to make of this strange man.

Leonidas studied Markus with a curious expression, as if trying to figure him out. He could tell that Markus was trying his best, but his efforts were falling short. And yet, he couldn't help but be intrigued by this strange, bold man who seemed to be so out of his element. In the end, Leonidas just shrugged, unsure of what to make of it all.

Celeste, sensing the tension, stepped in to try and smooth things over. "So, Leonidas," she began, her voice calm and reassuring.

As Celeste reached out to touch Leonidas's hand, he flinched, his eyes going wide. He didn't want to be rude, but he wasn't used to being touched by humans. It was all so new and overwhelming. He tried to focus on what Celeste was saying, but his mind was racing.

Meanwhile, the Blackwoods were beaming with pride. Mr. Blackwood was practically glowing, thinking that his daughter had caught the eye of a king. But Markus was seething, his face red with anger.

Celeste felt a wave of panic as she realized that her gesture might have been misunderstood. Leonidas had seemed uncomfortable, and she worried that she had offended him. She tried to smile, but her face felt frozen.

And then she noticed the looks on the Blackwoods' faces. Her father was positively gleeful, while her mother was practically squealing with delight. It was all so embarrassing.

Markus was still fuming, his whole body tensed with tension. Celeste wished she could make it all stop, but she felt trapped.

Leonidas felt like he was stuck in a nightmare. He had no idea how to navigate this social situation, and all he wanted was to disappear. But at the same time, he couldn't help but notice the positive reaction of the Blackwoods. It was strange, knowing that they were pleased with him even though he had barely said a word. He was utterly confused.

The longer the situation went on, the more uncomfortable Leonidas became. He felt like he was trapped in a cage, with no way to escape.

Markus felt a deep sense of betrayal. Not only had his wife been wooed by a god, but she seemed to be enjoying the attention. It was like a dagger to his heart. How could she do this to him? He clenched his teeth, his fists balled up at his sides. He wasn't sure what to do. Should he go along with the alliance, or make a scene?

Leonidas, meanwhile, was oblivious to the drama unfolding around him. He was lost in his own thoughts, his mind racing with ideas and possibilities.

Markus paced back and forth, his footsteps echoing in the empty room. A parakeet perched on the windowsill, watching him curiously. It was like the bird was trying to understand his thoughts and feelings. But he didn't want to be understood by a bird. He wanted to be understood by his wife.

As he continued to pace, he realized that if he backed down, his in-laws would see it as a victory. And that thought made him even more angry. He didn't want to give them the satisfaction.

As the group toured the menagerie, Leo proudly showed off his animals. He had collected creatures from all over the world, from tiny frogs to massive lions. Mrs. Blackwood's eyes began to glaze over as Leo rambled on about each animal's habits and behaviors. She glanced at her husband, who was looking equally bored.

But then Cedric perked up, noticing a chess board in the corner of the room. "Do you play?" he asked Leo. To everyone's surprise, the usually verbose young man simply nodded and took a seat at the board. The game was on.

Cedric carefully studied the board, his eyes flicking from piece to piece. He planned out his moves, calculating each possibility with lightning speed. It was almost like he could see the future, the different paths the game could take. Meanwhile, Leo watched him in silence, his expression inscrutable.

As the game progressed, Leo began to feel a strange sense of kinship with Cedric. They were both intelligent, analytical thinkers, and it was almost like they were communicating without words. But then a thought struck Leo, and he hesitated. Was it arrogant to think that he could match wits with an old man?

For a while, Leo simply let Cedric play, moving his own pieces in response to the other man's moves. But as the game neared its end, he began to formulate a strategy. He studied the board, searching for the perfect move. And then, when the moment was right, he made his play. The move was brilliant, and it took Cedric by surprise. His eyes widened, and he let out a low whistle. "Well played," he said, impressed.

As Markus waited for a chance to speak with Leonidas, he felt his patience wearing thin. He knew that this was an important meeting, and he needed to make his case for the alliance. But Leonidas was so focused on his game with Cedric, he seemed oblivious to everything else. And when Leonidas finally did look at Markus, he quickly looked away, his cheeks turning a shade of pink. Was he embarrassed? Or perhaps even... shy?

"Excuse me," Leonidas said, standing up from the chess table.

"I need to speak with Lord Markus about the terms of the alliance." He straightened his robes and took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. Then he approached Markus, his heart pounding in his chest. "Pardon the interruption," he said, bowing his head respectfully.

It was surprising to see Leonidas approach him directly, given how shy and withdrawn he had seemed up until now. And yet, there was something about the way he carried himself that made Markus feel a grudging respect. He braced himself for what was to come, wary of what the young king might say. But when he heard Leonidas speak, he was taken aback.

"I wanted to discuss the terms of our alliance," Leonidas began, his voice surprisingly firm. "I understand that there may be concerns about my leadership, given my age and inexperience.

Leonidas turned his gaze to Celeste, his cheeks burning with embarrassment. Had he made a mistake by saying something so awkward in front of her? He looked back at Markus, whose eyes had turned dark and dangerous. Leonidas felt a shiver of fear run down his spine. What was he missing here?

He tried to think of something to say, anything to break the tension. "Is everything okay, Celeste?" he asked, his voice shaking slightly. "I didn't mean to say anything weird or whatever.

Celeste stood still, not saying a word. She wanted to say something, to help ease the tension, but she found herself unable to speak. She looked at Markus, who seemed perfectly capable of handling the situation himself. Was she wrong to stay silent? But what could she possibly say to make things better?
