Chapter 84 Chapter 84
Violet
Nicole lowered her head and studied the carpet acting all innocent and gullible.
Alpha Alaric came closer to her and gave her a side hug, rubbing her shoulder reassuringly.
“What pack do you belong to, Violet?”
“Night how….I mean Night fury.” I corrected myself halfway and Nate’s face looked like he had just gotten the best christmas gift.
“Funny, for a second I almost thought you were going to say Night howl. That is my pack’s name.”
I shot him a venomous glare but he was busy staring smugly at me.
“Ahh, where have I heard that name again?” Alpha Alaric scratched his temple as if lost in thought and then he snapped his fingers.
“Are you by any chance related to some guy called Luke?”
My eyes widened in fear. No, this couldn’t be real.
I gulped nervously. “Alpha Luke and Luna Miranda of the Night Fury pack are my parents.”
Alpha Alaric gave me an all too knowing smile.
“Now that is why I was wondering where have I seen you. That face of yours is pretty similar to that of Luke.”
My fingers fidgeted with the strap of my purse uselessly.
“How…how do you know them?”
“Ah, that poor bloke fell on my feet at the council meeting, begging me to save his pack from getting demolished.”
Nicole giggled at that line and I felt the need to grab a hot poker and ram it into her mouth. I pictured how it must have looked when my father begged for support while Alpha alaric sat smugly on his chair.
My eyes flicked to Nate. He was the one who had backed out of the alliance at the last minute and turned everybody against us by spouting lies. And then turning me into the butt of all jokes with that video.
“I…we are thankful for all your help, Alpha Alaric.” I said, trying to not show how much it hurt me to even imagine what my father must have gone through.
Nicole pouted. “See, we are all helping each other. Can you not stay given that alpha Alaric was so generous with your pack.”
Nate butted in.
“Yeah, you should repay Alpha Alaric’s favor to your pack by simply being their for his daughter. Its fitting, I would dare say.”
For a second, I simply stood there, staring at them all with a stunned expression.
“I…I am really thankful for the support, Alpha Alaric. Really. But I also have a job. They wont just let me off for a month.”
Alpha Alaric looked at me curiously.
“I am yet to come across anyone who would say no to a Deveraux. Especially when its me who is asking.”
Nicole fed his ego beautifully.
“Of course. They would, in fact, ask you to get a special invitation for their whole pack to be able to attend an event hosted by the prestigious Deveraux family.”
Were all of the family members plain bullies in this home?
“Who is your employer? Give me the name!”
I looked at Elijah who looked interested for the first time since this whole fiasco started. He leaned just a bit forward though still stood far apart from the rest of the group, still munching on that apple.
He had been trying to wriggle that name out of me for days already but I had not given in and had also asked Cassie to do the same.
I tried to think of saying something else, coming up with just any excuse to distract them but then I finally gave in.
“The Stratford group”
Nate’s face had been scrunched but then I could see him connecting the dots at my answer. After all, I had bumped into him in that office weeks ago.
And he had threatened to malign my image. I wasn’t even sure if Nate had gotten a chance to work with the Sratfords because that part had completely skipped my mind.
Alpha Aaric gave that name some thought and shouted. “Where the hell is my assistant when I need her! Kelly!!”
A girl came running at us, panting and holding a few files in her hands that fell right at alpha Alaric’s feet when she stopped short of dashing into him.
“Y-yes alpha”
Her voice sounded like a squeaky toy. She looked my age, and was wearing work clothes and glasses.
“Give me the contact number of this Stratford guy. Now!”
She fumbled for a diary and flipped af ew pages fast and clumsily handed him the diary.
“There is the number”
Alpha Alaric dialed the number and put it on speaker for everybody to listen, especially me.
“Hello?” I heard the familiar voice of /Mr William Stratford from the other end.
Alpha Alaric looked at the diary and muttered. “William is it? Hey, this is Alaric Deveraux.”
Mr william’s tone had been casual but I noticed him growing instantly alert upon hearing that name.
“Oh, Alpha Deveraux. What a pleasant surprise! To what do I owe…”
Alpha Alaric didn’t let him complete and cut him in between.
“Just wanted to talk about an employee of yours. Lily, no some flower, wait…”
Nicole chuckled again and laughed. “You are so silly, alpha Alaric. Her name is Violet Hayes.”
“My bad, yeah Violet Hayes. So I need her for a month at my place, do you have a problem with that?”
William Stratford was an old guy but a cool one. He took some seconds to remember who I was but then he replied.
“Of course not. We all are alive and prospering because of the founding families. It is our duty to help you first and foremost.”
Alpha Alaric looked pleased with that declaration.
“Though can I know what work she is supposed to do? I can clear her of all duties temporarily if needed.”
What?
Why was my work being delegated to someone else without my permission?
“No, no. We are not jerks, William. My daughter just needed her support for a month and a father would do anything to keep her daughter happy, right?”
Mr William seemed to nod.
“Of course. Please feel free to call me if you ever need anything else.”
“Sure” Alpha Alaric disconnected the call and Nicole placed a kiss on his cheek, appearing thrilled.
“What a power move, alpha Alaric. I bet he will tell all his friends about how you personally called him on his phone.”
She appeared all smug and happy while I felt trapped with people I didn’t know and had no business spending time with.
Alpha Alaric gave her an amused smile and looked at me.
“Do I need to call anybody else? Your parents maybe?”
