Chapter 31 Chapter 31
Violet
She trailed off, abruptly realizing she had spoken more than necessary.
Ava applied a generous amount of butter and sauces to the bread, loaded all the veggies before handing a plate to me.
“Please have it and tell me if the taste is off.”
I took a bite and it was heavenly but the questions in my head wouldnt die down.
“What happened back at Elijah’s father’s place? You said everything was going fine but then something happened…”
Ava shook her head and pretended to get busy with her chores.
“Its nothing, just ignore it.”
However, I pressed on, momentarily forgetting all about my parents and the need to inform them about my whereabouts.
“No, please tell me, what happened?”
But Ava shook her head and began chopping onions aggressively.
“We are not allowed to talk about it. Alpha Elijah forbids it.”
What was such a big secret that he forbade his people from talking about it?
I figured nudging her a lot wouldn't give me answers so I focussed on emptying my plate. The sandwiches disappeared from the plate in an instant and Ava proceeded to give me a tall glass of juice without even asking for it.
Though she completely stopped talking to me for the fear of accidentally slipping something else out.
And even though I wanted to know the secret, my body started screaming for the other things it needed from me.
Like a warm bath and a bed to crash down.
I glanced upwards and noticed that Elijah was still busy in a meeting. And I wanted to not look like a homeless person, smelling like trash when I spoke to him again.
So, I got up from the table, thanked Ava for the food and asked,
“Can I use Cassie’s bathroom? Need a quick shower.”
I had rarely done that, using someone’s personal space when they werent around but Rain was also pestering me about the body odor.
Ava wiped her hands on the apron and readily guided me to Cassie’s room, started preparing a nice bath for me while also laying down a few clothes for me on the bed.
Man, I had not expected her to do that.
“Do you also want me to shampoo your hair? I can help you with a light massage as well if you want.”
My eyes popped upon hearing that. Our place had maids but I never received or even asked for such royal treatment.
But would that mean I am getting too greedy with the host and the services he was providing?
Before I could rethink my decision, I heard the words “Yes please” tumble out of my mouth.
“Rain!”
I grumbled at her because she had forced those words out.
“As if you were not dying to say them yourselves. We deserve a little pampering. Come on.”
Ava pulled out a few candles and shower gels and whatnot while I gawked at it all as if it would break if I touched it.
After fifteen minutes, the bath was ready. Hot water was bubbling in the bathtub with rose petals and some scented candles were placed all around.
“Do you like it?” she asked and my mouth fell half open.
“I love it”
She grinned and I quickly stripped off my dirty clothes that she put in a laundry basket.
“I will get those dry cleaned”
“Thanks” I mumbled and stepped into the bath.
The hot water felt like a soothing salve to my tired and dirty skin as I settled in it.
Ava let me soak in for a few minutes before starting to gently untangle and wash my hair.
“I cant thank you enough for this service” I didn’t want her to think I was taking advantage of her alpha’s generosity but she only continued untangling my hair and started working up lather with a gentle cleansing shampoo.
“Alpha Elijah told me about Cassie, about the accident when I asked him where she was. He also mentioned how you tried to help. I am grateful for your help in finding Cassie.”
She spoke as if I had done her some personal favor. She truly admired Elijah and was loyal to him and his loved ones.
“Oh, I didn’t know” I said softly.
She smiled. “Cassie means the world to him…after everything. He would give his life if you asked for it.”
I suddenly felt jealous of Cassie. In a good way.
I didnt have a loving sibling and neither had Nate ever been so loving towards me to guard me like I was the most important person in his life.
My face fell momentarily when I remembered him.
It had been a few weeks since he asked me to leave, since everything occurred. And not once, he had tried to contact me.
He had never tried to talk to me, never returned to offer some apology or explanation. I had spent years with him.
Did I mean so little to him that he could just wipe me out of his life like I never existed? I imagined what he must be doing now, how Nicole must be poisoning his mind, how my pack that I had lovingly built was now being operated by someone else.
“Are you anxious?” Ava suddenly asked, dragging me out of my thoughts.
“Huh, no. Why?” I lied.
“You suddenly stiffened your shoulders so I wondered. Though I am sorry to intrude.” she apologized.
“It is fine. Just a bad memory” I said and focussed on her fingers combing through my hair.
“I didn’t know you also were an expert in haircare. Your touch is very relaxing”
Ava beamed at the compliment.
“I have been trained in all sorts of stuff, not just cooking and cleaning. I also know hair styling, a bit of makeup, crocheting, etc.”
“Woah, you are an all rounder.”
Ava grew shy at the compliments. Maybe she wasn’t used to receiving them.
“Thanks, while working under an alpha, our then luna wanted us to be prepared for anything, for any demands the future Luna would throw at us.”
Future Luna.
That thought made me queasy for a moment. I didn’t know they trained servants and maids in all that.
“I havent put these skills to use in a long time. So I am actually glad I am doing something other than cooking for a change.”
Her lines made more questions pop in my head.
When was the last time a girl was here? How long had Elijah dated his last girlfriend? Had Ava given her this same kind of treatment? Why did they break up?
But I didnt ask any of it, knowing that she probably wouldn’t answer. So I let her gently massage my shoulders and back while also cleaning my hair.
After almost an hour she announced that she was done and asked if I wanted anything. I shook my head and thanked her again as she wiped her hands on the towel.
I was in the process of getting up when I suddenly heard Elijah’s voice.
“Ava, where are you?”
