Chapter 152

Chapter 152
Jett
“Dude, you know we could just sort these bad assholes out, don’t you?” Ethan says with a menacing grin. I nod and uncross my legs and lean forward with my elbows resting on my knees.
“Sure do, couple of punks is all they are from the sound of it. Not worth our effort to be honest. We will let the cops and the insurance deal with everything. Listen, we do not need more shit on our plate. We already have gone through too much. Let’s focus on other things. You,” I say pointing to Jackson. “Can go and deal with the club issues. I for one want to start living an easier life with Kitty and not having all this stress. We need to take a vote on who wants to be the leader of our M.C.”
Everyone’s jaws practically drop to the ground. Jackson blinks several times. “You what now?” he asks. “You want to step down? For real? Seriously, Bro you have been our leader since forever. We don’t want anyone else to take over from us. None of us can fill your shoes, Jett.”
I let out a sigh and scrub the palm of my hand across the back of my neck. “Someone can, Leroy would be a good leader. Ethan even although you are a pit of a pussy at times. No offence, Man.”
He flicks me the bird. I reciprocate the action.
“Nah, I ain’t taking over,” Leroy tells us adamantly. “We don’t want you to step down. How about we scale back some of our shit instead. We can easily sell off a couple of the clubs and stop our progression plans. Listen, we’ve all banked a hell of a lot of money over the years. I’ve been sensible with my share,” he continues.
It is true, we have all banked in excess of a couple of million each. That doesn’t make us billionaires, far from it. But with the millions we do have each, we can easily scale back our operations, sell a few businesses and make even more money.
“I like the idea of us just hanging out,” Jackson says as he leans back on the sofa stretching an arm along the back of it. “You know go for the rides on the weekend, do some long-haul rides across the States. Pitch up where we feel like it and let someone else take on the stress. Less shit to handle, less stress. You know what I’m sayin’¿”
I do know what he is saying and more than anything it sounds tempting. We don’t need more money on top of good money. Like I said, if we sell some of the businesses and the clubs, we stand to make a few more mill each.
“Okay, we need to take a vote on who wants this to happen and who doesn’t. Everyone is pretty much here so let’s go for the vote.”
Ethan, Leroy and Jackson put their hands up without hesitating. “We keep the bike garages though. If you don’t want to manage them you can hire staff in. I do want to keep across mine. I enjoy the work and besides, I don’t like the idea of being retired just yet. Kitty will want to do something. I can’t see her sitting around getting a pregnant belly and not being invested in some kind of work.”
Leroy chuckles. “That woman ain’t never gonna sit down, dude. Even if you put five babies in her belly.”
I shake my head and grin. He’s right. Kitty is not the staying still kind of woman.
“Okay then. I’ll get my lawyer and accountant on to everything and we will find a few buyers who want to take over the clubs and the other businesses.”
My phone rings on the table in front of me. Picking it up I can see a missed call from Kitty’s mobile. I pick up. “You missed me already, baby? How’s mom?”
“Is that Jett Callahan?” A woman speaks at the other end. Huh, what the hell is going on now. Why is someone calling me from Kitty’s mobile.
“It is, who is asking? Where is Kitty?”
“If you mean Ekaterina Volkova, then I am calling on her behalf. There has been an accident,” she tells me.
My heart begins to race in my chest and a pain hits me like some kind of arrow has just shot through it. I stand up and begin pacing running a hand through my tousled hair “Accident? What kind of fucking accident? Where is she?”
The guys are studying me. Ethan asks if everything is okay, I can only shrug because I have no idea.
“Ekaterina is in surgery at the Mount Isla Hospital. There was a road traffic accident….” She continues to talk as I cut off the phone, grab my keys from the table and stuff them in my pocket. I grab my jacket like a man possessed and begin to stride towards the door.
“Hey, Jett. What the hell is going on?” Leroy shouts out.
“Kitty has had an accident; she is at the hospital and is in surgery.”
I hear a series of fucks from the guys. “We’re coming with,” Jackson says. I nod.
“Thanks,” I reply as I race to open the door and get outside. Fuck, my heart is almost beating out of my chest. How bad has Kitty been hurt? Who the fuck has hit her. I swear to God, I will make sure that he or she pays. I ain’t taking no prisoners. If my woman does not make it out of surgery there will be all sorts of hell to pay.
Twenty minutes later the guys and I pull up outside the hospital. I don’t give a fuck as I park in one of the staff bays. So sue me. Right now, I don’t give a rat’s ass. I am here to see Kitty and to hope that she makes it through surgery. I need to know how bad her situation is. My mouth is dry and my hands feel clammy.
I can’t lose Kitty now, I just can’t. She is my life. The sunrise of a morning, the light that shines for me through my dark days. Her laughter fills my heart and my head. “Go,” Ethan urges, we will catch you up.
Running through the doors I have to apologize to a man in his sixties or thereabouts as I brush shoulders with the man and almost knock him flying. My over six-foot frame and broad shoulders are no match for him. I steady him. “Sorry, Sir,” I say. He nods.
“Don’t worry, Son. I hope whoever you are flying in here for is going to be alright.”
I nod and thank him and continue stomping my way like a man possessed to the front desk. “Hello, how can I help you?” The woman behind the glass with her colleagues is in her forties at a guess. Her highlighted auburn hair is pulled into a ponytail and she wears pale pink lipstick or gloss. What do I know?
“I’m here to see Ekaterina Volkov,” I tell her drumming my fingers on the counter. Dammit, I need to see her now.
She seems to take her time as she clacks on the keyboard. I let out a frustrated breath. “Right, Miss Volkov was brought in about forty-five minutes ago, prepped for surgery and it appears she is still in surgery.”
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. I rake my fingers through my hair again. “Where should I go?” I ask all the while my heart pounding so much it begins to cause my physical pain. A lump has formed in my throat that aches like a motherfucker.
“Take the elevator to floor two, when it opens you go down the corridor on the right and there is a waiting room. You can wait there for a surgeon to come out and speak with you when they are finished with Miss Volkov.”
“Shit,” I mutter. She raises her eyebrows at me.
“Sorry, Ma’am. I didn’t mean no offence.”
“It’s fine. I think I would be the same if it was one of my loved ones. Off you go. I should imagine they might be a while.”
What in the Lord’s name is that supposed to mean?
How badly has Kitty been hurt?
