Chapter 79 The Voice Behind
The phone stubbornly rang again. John, dripping wet, immediately came out, grabbed the phone, and went back inside. Shortly after, a frustrated growl came from within, "I have worked at the office; I'm very busy... stop making a fuss!"
Then, there was silence; only the sound of running water remained.
When he came out, he haphazardly dried himself off and lay down on the bed. I asked with concern, "Are you very tired?"
"I'm not feeling well," he replied hoarsely, pulling the blanket over himself and saying no more.
I reached out to touch him considerately and exclaimed, "You're burning up!"
"Yes," he responded lazily.
"Let me get you some medicine," I nagged but didn't move.
He mumbled, "Don't bother."
I sneered inwardly. 'Fine, I won't say anything then.'
Before long, he curled up into a ball, breathing evenly, seemingly asleep. I tested him, and he didn't respond at all.
I quietly got out of bed, took his phone, and hid in the bathroom. The phone was off, so I quickly turned it on and entered his password.
As anticipated, the latest call was from "Ms. Harris," undoubtedly Sophie. Every recent call bore her name, and a plethora of missed calls spanned from dawn to dusk. It appeared she had not been in John's company since the previous evening, indicating her lingering ire from the prior night remained unexpressed.
I opened his Facebook but found no conversation with anyone resembling Sophie. I was puzzled; could they be communicating outside of Facebook?
I suddenly thought of John's other phone. 'Could the person with the username Blue Enchantress be Sophie? Does that mean the person he meets once a week is Sophie? They really are in sync.'
Upon revisiting his Facebook messages, I swiftly discerned an indecent profile image depicting a graphic representation of female anatomy. Clicking on it, I nearly uttered a profanity. The magnified profile image, upon closer inspection, revealed a broom against a nude backdrop, creating an illusion of the aforementioned anatomy when viewed from afar.
John's profile picture clearly showed his intentions for online dating.
The chat history was filled with lewd conversations between him and this woman, extremely vulgar and frequent.
John was a pervert, disgustingly repulsive to the point where I found it unbearable to even cast a glance his way; he resembled a filthy, debased swine!
From the chat history alone, I concluded that John hadn't been intimate with Sophie for a while. Otherwise, he wouldn't be so bold as to leave these chat records.
I checked other apps but found nothing new, so I turned off the phone and quietly put it back.
John was still curled up under the blanket, sleeping soundly, clearly with a high fever. I couldn't be bothered to take his temperature. Facing a beast who wanted to kill me, I wasn't that kind-hearted.
But I was a bit unwilling. How could there be no information about Sophie? I wanted to confirm if the person with the username "Blue Enchantress" was Sophie.
So, I found his car keys and quietly went downstairs.
The night was deep and silent, and the garage lights were dim, making it exceptionally cold. I shivered involuntarily.
With nimble dexterity, I deftly unlatched the car door and extended my hand into the space where his phone typically resided, only to encounter emptiness. Perplexed, I distinctly recalled its presence during his last visit. Might he have taken it upstairs?
Inconceivable. His meticulous nature and the significance of that phone to him make it highly improbable for him to act carelessly, particularly after his intervention to prevent me from taking medication and witnessing my gradual recovery. One would expect him to exercise even greater vigilance.
But no matter how hard I looked, I couldn't find that phone.
How strange!
I was exhausted and just about to pull myself out when a voice suddenly came from behind, startling me into a scream.
