Chapter 80 Jane Following
"Mrs. Hall, what are you doing?"
Amidst the hushed obscurity of the garage, a sudden utterance jolted me to the core, prompting a piercing shriek to escape my lips. Whirling around swiftly, I beheld Jane's presence, garbed in delicate night attire, her arrival a silent feat that had evaded my senses entirely.
My mind went blank.
I cursed inwardly; 'damn it!'
I immediately plopped down on the seat, panting and clutching my chest to calm my racing heart.
In the very next moment, I shot her an angry look and exclaimed, "Hey, what's up with the stealth mode? Sneaking around like a ghost – you do realize you could give someone a heart attack, right?"
I closed my eyes, my mind racing on how to deal with her.
Jane was a bit surprised by my outburst and stared at me in a daze.
"Why the midnight stroll? Why the stalking mission?" I vociferously queried before she could respond, leaving her momentarily dumbfounded.
"I saw you come down, so I followed you," she stammered, clearly flustered.
I glared at her, then got up and tidied up the car's interior. In a moment of quick thinking, I grabbed a box of medicine and a thermometer from the car's storage compartment.
With a cold expression, I locked the car with the key and headed back to the house.
Although I appeared calm, my heart was in a panic. 'How did she know I came downstairs? And she followed me here. If she reports this to John, it will definitely arouse his suspicion.'
As I walked, I glanced down and felt a sense of relief. Luckily, there was still medicine in the car, probably bought by John during the recent pandemic. It unexpectedly helped me out of this situation.
Jane followed me back to the house, and I coldly said to her, "Get me a glass of water!"
Gazing at me, bemused, she fetched a glass of water and ascended the staircase in my wake. Upon entering the room, I unsealed the compact container housing the thermometer, scrutinized it under the lamplight, and proceeded to perch beside John on the bed. With care, I raised his arm and slid the thermometer beneath.
Jane watched in astonishment and asked, "Is Mr. Hall sick?"
I glared at her and retorted, "What do you think?"
"I didn't mean anything by it. I didn't follow you on purpose. I just saw you go out in the middle of the night..." Jane stammered, trying to explain.
"Jane, get this straight. This is my own house, and I have the freedom to move around. You are not sleeping in the middle of the night and following me. What are you trying to do? Is there a problem with me going out in the middle of the night?" I aggressively questioned, "In my own house, can't I move around freely?"
Jane looked embarrassed, with no room to explain.
"Then I'll leave now!" She regretfully took a step toward the door, but I immediately stopped her, "Stay right there!"
She paused, looking at me, confused.
I said coldly, "Check his temperature and help me give him the medicine!"
After a moment, I took out the thermometer and checked it under the light. Jane, looking anxious, asked, "How is it?"
I deliberately replied with concern, "100.4°F, why is it so high?"
"What should we do? Mrs. Hall, maybe we should go to the hospital!" Jane stepped forward, genuinely worried.
I shot her a fierce look, and she immediately stopped.
I gestured to her, "Give me the medicine!"
Promptly, she passed me the medication container retrieved from the vehicle moments ago. After perusing the directions, I extracted two pills, prompting Jane to pass me the water. Supporting John's head, I gently coerced his tightly shut teeth ajar, deposited the pills within, and administered the water provided by Jane.
He groggily struggled a bit, and I softly said, "Don't move; your fever is too high! We need to take the medicine."
Executing my part flawlessly, I clandestinely expressed gratitude for his fever on this particular night. Otherwise, I would have found myself in a precarious predicament.
He groaned in pain and swallowed the medicine. During this time, I saw Jane pick up the thermometer and check it.
To complete the act, I placed John back on the pillow, leaned down to touch his forehead with mine, and sighed.
Then I got out of bed, holding the water cup, and walked out, saying to Jane, "Go back to rest! Don't sneak around next time! You scared me to death!"
She meekly followed me out. I went downstairs, and she returned to her room.
As I went downstairs, I glanced at her tightly closed door and quickly took out the medical kit, stuffing the fever medicine into my bra.
