Chapter 13: Hidden Truth

Kenzi's POV

"You can call me Maggie" She said and ushered me into the house and went to the kitchen to get something for me.

"Have your seat and give me few minutes" she had said. I looked around the house. The sitting room was spacious and the interior design looked nice. I saw a family picture of my mate's family. She looked young and beautiful in the photo.

"Have this" Maggie offered me a cup of juice and sat down on the sofa opposite me.

I sipped the juice and kept it on the table close to me.

"Zoe isn't home at the moment" She said bringing out her phone.

"So why do you want to see Zoe" She asked me, looking up from her phone. I suddenly became nervous. 'I'm an Alpha for God's sake' I scolded myself. I uncomfortably moved a little to the side of the sofa. Thank God she was looking at her phone. As if she read my mind, she looked up and kept her phone down. I composed myself and spoke like an Alpha that I am.

"She is like a friend?" It was more of a question. She just looked at me.

'I can't just say I am a werewolf now, can I?' I thought of a reasonable way to explain.

"I came here purposely because of Zoe, I want to know more about her. I saw her earlier today and can't seem to stop thinking about her. It's a little complicated but she is the most important thing to me right now." I exhaled slightly. She just smiled. It was obvious that I was nervous but her smile calmed me down.

"Does Zoe knows about you?" She asked still smiling.

"No ma'am" I said unsure with a hint of disappointment.

"She doesn't know about me yet but I assure you that I'm not a threat" I almost pleaded.

"I know you are not" The sound of a metal creaking caught my attention but I ignored it.

"You are her mate right?" She raised her brow. I froze.

What does she mean by that? Does that mean she knows about werewolf… Maybe she isn't referring to werewolf mates. But what other things uses mates. What am I even saying.

"Hey, are you okay?" She asked with concern, that's when I realised I had zone out.

"I'm fine, sorry about that." I quickly apologized. She stood up from her position and sat down on the same sofa with me.

"You must be surprised that I know about mates." She said softly.

'Shocked' would be preferable. I nodded and slightly turned to face her.

"I know about werewolves." She started. "During our camping vacation, we met a werewolf and also after we saved Zoe." She continued.

"Saved?" I asked with a confused expression. I knew she was human but there are times when human are mated to werewolf.

"Yes, saved" She confirmed.

"She is my adopted daughter." She further explained.

"I didn't expect that." I unintentionally said aloud.

She let out a small laugh and I cursed under my breath. Then she continued her story.

"He was nice to us and told us little about werewolf, infact all the basic story one needed to know. The most important one being mates. We had no idea why he told us the story. But I realised later. There are times when Zoe does awfully strange things that normal human being couldn't do. I observed this and watched her closely for the past few weeks after her 17th birthday. The obvious part was when she dances. Weather changes during her dance. I'm not sure she knows about this but I'm sure she is a werewolf. From the story the werewolf man told us, Zoe exhibit most of those abilities." She exhaled. It was as if a burden was just lifted off her shoulders.

I was speechless. Then a thought passed through my mind.

"Why are you telling me this" I asked her. "I could be dangerous you know." I said with a serious face.

"Well you aren't." she casually said.

"How did you know I was a werewolf and her mate, aren't you scared?" I asked. She laughed, which baffled me more.

"Ofcourse I am scared." she said. "Do you think I would reveal a secret to someone I just met?" She asked.

"I thought so too, but why" I needed to know.

"Before I opened the door I sprayed something on the sofa which reveals the scent of the person that sits on it." She said standing up and walking back to her seat. Strange. If it meant turning to a duckling, I would have turned ages ago. I should be more careful in this city.

"And I have been doing this for years now when I heard werewolf could be around, for my safety and my family." she faced me when I looked up.

'I had no idea something like this existed and even if it does, why was this information hidden from the werewolf community?' it would be a very useful material. I zoned back again.

"Zoe is precious to me and I would do anything to protect my girl." The name brought me back. I was proud to hear that someone truly care about my mate's safety.

"Immediately you sat down, your scent started coming off and when I came back from the kitchen, it was so strong that I had to text the werewolf man about it. He confirmed my suspicion and I became scared" she played with her phone and paused for a moment before she continued.

"I knew you were her mate because my husband approached me the same way you just did when I lost the father of my children." she finished. Is it what I'm thinking, I said in my head. Though everything all points to it.

"My husband is the werewolf man I told you about." She smiled. My jaw almost dropped to the floor in astonishment.

What an unexpected turn of situation.
