Chapter eighty nine
Chapter eighty nine
“So, I’d like to ask…” I paused, leaning against the counter at Mia’s. “Aside from being Brandon’s sister, do you even realize that your job as a receptionist isn’t just to let anyone barge in?” I didn’t care that she was family—what just happened with Drake, or whatever his name was, should never have happened if she’d done her job properly.
“Being the CEO’s sister doesn’t give you a free pass on everything. First, it was his fiancée—okay, maybe excusable, fine, you were busy chit-chatting in my office instead of actually working. But then Drake? No appointment, just waltzing in like he owns the place! And you did nothing to stop him!” I snapped, my hands clenching. I could maybe understand her not being able to block her father, but those two? That was on her.
Mia looked visibly uncomfortable, and that only made my blood boil more.
“You can’t speak now?” I snapped.
“Well… it’s Drake,” she mumbled.
“What the fuck does that mean? Does he own the company or something?”
She let out a long sigh, tapping her fingers against her desk nervously.
“He… kind of does,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
“What?” I repeated, my voice rising.
“He… he has the largest shares in this company, Alex. Brandon gave it to him,” Mia said, hesitating as if she expected me to explode.
“What?” I whispered again, disbelief clawing at my chest.
“Well… as you said, I better get back to my work,” she muttered, retreating behind her desk like she didn’t want to get caught in the storm she’d just triggered.
I ran a hand through my hair, pacing in front of her desk. My mind was racing, trying to process what she just said.
“So… you didn’t think I deserved to know ‘your ex’,” I said, making air quotes with my fingers, “owns almost half the damn company.”
Brandon finally lifted his gaze from the system, eyes dark and piercing. “So… you didn’t think I deserved to know you’ve been talking to my ex behind my back?”
“I wasn’t talking to him!” I shot back, voice sharp. “I haven’t even had a proper conversation with him, Brandon. Not once!”
“Oh, please! I can’t believe I almost trusted you,” he scoffed, his voice sharp, laced with disbelief.
“I can’t believe you’re taking the word of a guy who left you over me!” I shot back, heat flaring in my chest. “Now I see why he always thought you were a fool!”
His eyes widened in shock, and I immediately shrank back. Fuck… I didn’t mean to say that.
“Leave. My. Office.” That instantly made me annoyed.
“Of course! What else are you gonna say? Leave my fucking office. You need to man the fuck up and actually communicate with me if you want whatever the hell this is between us to work! You can’t keep projecting Drake—or whatever your ‘adorable first love’— did onto me! It’s exhausting!”
“So… you’re saying you want to break up?”
“Are you fucking stupid?” I snapped, disbelief hitting me full force. For fuck’s sake, how did I even like a man like that? Why the hell am I even gay?! Maybe I should’ve just fallen for Kira and fought her husband for her.
“Alex… please leave. I can’t deal with this right now,” he murmured, pinching the bridge of his nose, his voice tight with frustration.
“Oh, it’s Alex now? You can’t have a proper conversation with me, but you can spend an hour with your ex?” I spat, my chest heaving.
“I wasn’t talking to him,” he sneered, eyes cold.
“Oh, were you fucking then?”
“Not everyone gets bent over a desk as easily as you do, Alex,” he shot back, his tone sharp.
I froze, my mouth opening, closing, opening again—no words would come. My heart slammed against my ribs, and all I could manage was a stunned, “Really?”
“Just leave.”
“Does bending over easily also include him topping you? Is that why you’re so… fucked up in the head that you can’t let anyone else top or Touch you? You seemed just as easy when I—” My words caught in my throat. I wanted, more than anything, to sting him with my words, to make him feel the sharp edge of my anger.
But then I saw it—the hurt flashing in his eyes, raw and unguarded—and my anger faltered. My chest tightened. All I wanted was to make him hurt, but seeing him like that made me want to take it all back.
