Chapter 19 CHAPTER NINETEEN
CAIUS
“This is a very bad idea.” Clayton says.
“It’s the only one we’ve got.” I reply, not taking my eyes off the road.
“When people only have bad ideas, it’s usually a sign to re-strategize not to go ahead. She could die.”
“You think I’d let her die?”
He clenches his jaw but shakes his head. “Good, keep driving.”
We let her drive a little before we went after her. The drama that’s about to ensue can’t happen anywhere near the council. We’ve been following at a good distance but now were gaining on her and she has noticed.
She’s gong full throttle but her old truck is no match for this engine.
“Stay calm, and keep to the plan.”
He takes a deep breath then increases our speed. Soon he’s behind her, able to hit her bumper if he wants to. She stops abruptly and Clayton swerves left. Good thing he likes driving so much, the crazy woman almost caused serious injuries to everyone here.
We’ve gone off the road and we're driving on rock and she hits us, trying to push us off the road.
“Fuck, she’s trying to kill us.”
She looks out at me and I see the fury in her eyes. Her hair is disheveled and flying everywhere and her hands are white against the steering. She tries to hit us again and I throw the concoction I made through her window. Clayton slows down until we're behind her.
Smoke fills the car and she slams the breaks. I see her struggle to open the door and she finally opens it but she doesn’t come out. The ball worked. We wait a few minutes until the smoke clears before I come down from the car to go get her.
I open the car door and carry her back to my car. Clayton opens the backdoor for me and I gently put her inside. I get in the back with her and put her head on my thighs.
“We just kidnapped your mate. How is this our life?”
I sigh, not having a response to it. Maeva won’t listen to me on her own and the council her forcing her was just a bad idea. “Call her Beta so he can come get the car.”
“Okay, what else am I supposed to say to him when he starts asking why he’s coming to get a car with no alpha?”
“Nothing. It’s not his concern. He can come get the car or not. We’re leaving.”
Clayton sighs and makes the call. As expected, the beta has a lot of questions but Clayton doesn’t answer anyone of his questions. After he drops the call, he starts driving.
I look down my thighs at Maeva who is in an induced coma until I decide to wake her up. The council healer was very surprised to find me at her doorstep asking for something powerful enough to put an Alpha to sleep.
She’s going to hate our new arrangement but I’m never letting her go. She’s mine forever.
Clayton drives to my mother’s castle. It’s where she spent her last days. I don’t come here often but it’s the only place that can hold Maeva until she agrees to give us a fair fighting chance.
“I want you to go out and buy a phone for Maeva. She’s going to want to be in communication with her pack. Put her Beta’s number in there then come back with food for her when you’re done.”
I then carry her out and he drives off. The whole area has been out of bounds since my mother lived here and after she died so I’m not afraid of anybody passing by and noticing that someone lives here now.
I open the door and take her to the underground home my mother lived in. Maeva's living above ground depends on how well she takes this development.
I put her on the bed and tuck her hair behind her ear. She looks so peaceful lying down here like this. The moment I wake her up, this bubble no longer exists and I have a serious fight on my hands. I spend the next ten minutes memorizing her face and wishing things were different.
She’s my mate, the one person I’m supposed to let my guard down around. It shouldn’t be this hard. My wolf purrs at her sleeping form. I have to wake her up now. I take out the cloth that was doused in potions that the healer gave me and put it under her nose.
She stirs and I move back. She’s going to be violent when she sees me. She starts to move and soon she’s sitting up, looking around in confusion. When her eyes stop on me, they widen and she flies out if the bed. She’s weak because of what I gave her so her punch doesn’t have any weight behind it.
“You drugged me.” she says, her voice coarse and small.
I carry her back to the bed and I put her there.
“You have to rest. You’re going to be weak for a while.”
She doesn’t listen, she tries to claw my face off but I move back and dodge her attack.
“I’m sorry I drugged you.” I say, patting her hair. “I promise, you’ll be fine once you eat and sleep.”
“You’re a monster Caius. Reporting wasn’t enough so you had to drug and kidnap me?”
Her words hurt me. I know she’s drugged and can’t feel how much hearing those words from her hurt. I clench my jaw and move back.
“I was there at the council, I saw how you reacted and you were right the other day. I’m tired of this bullshit. You’re going to stay here until you agree to have a conversation about us. A conversation where we come to a suitable agreement that benefits the both of us, do you understand.”
“Go fuck yourself, Caius.”
“Thank you for the suggestion, I will think about you while I do it.”
Her face contorts in disgust but her nipples harden. I laugh and she tries to attack me again. I sigh, catch her and help her lie down again.
I hear footsteps upstairs and I leave the room to go meet Clayton.
“That was quick.”
“I guessed she’d need food soon so I just brought the cell phone you have but refuse to use instead of buying another one.”
I smile at him. “Thank you, she’s awake now but she’s too tired to be as angry as she wants to be.”
He laughs. “Ahh, explains why you’re not bleeding yet.”
I take the phone and the food and return downstairs. She’s sleeping when I enter and I sigh in relief. No fight yet. I put the food and phone on a coffee table then write a little note and leave it on the phone before making sure she’s okay. As soon as I’m sure that she’s fine, I kiss her forehead and I leave.
We’ll be fine.
