Threads of Desire and Deception

CHAPTER 181: Threads of Desire and Deception

“THIS WAS HER CHOICE,” Max snapped.

Yuri froze, stunned by the force of it.

Max wasn’t done.

“She’s our queen. Not our possession.”

He stepped forward, though unsteady, and bowed his head briefly to Alicia.

Pain radiated from him like heat waves.

“You chose Brooke,” he said softly, throat tight. “And I won’t disrespect that.”

Tawny whined, broken.

Max blinked rapidly, fighting the tears burning in his eyes.

Yuri looked from Max to Alicia, then back to Brooke, fury warring with heartbreak.

But he finally bowed his head.

Barely.

Grudgingly.

“For now,” he muttered.

Alicia’s chest ached.

She wanted to comfort them, to ease the damage, but Flo whispered in her mind.

"The bond is sealed. You cannot soften what fate has cut."

Diana’s voice suddenly carried from the back, strange, almost gleeful.

“So the queen is mated,” she said. “Good. Very good. Now Max can finally be free.”

Alicia frowned.

Diana’s eyes glowed with an unsettling mixture of excitement and intent.

“Max,” Diana called, smile widening, “your mate from the Moon Festival awaits you. The one chosen when fate rejected the queen’s tie.”

The omega girl stepped forward, bright-eyed, trembling, radiating gentle warmth.

Alicia turned sharply to Max, shock slicing through her.

He had not spoken of this.

She hadn’t had time to process it.

Max’s breath caught as the girl’s scent drifted toward him, sweet, soothing, unmistakable.

His wolf froze.

Then,Tawny whispered, wonder-soft.

"Mate!"

Max staggered.

The entire courtyard gasped.

Yuri stiffened.

Brooke squeezed Alicia’s hand, grounding her.

The omega girl whispered timidly.

“I… I am yours, if you want me.”

Max stared at her, torn, trembling, breaking open.

His eyes flicked once to Alicia.

She felt the ache in that look.

But she nodded slowly.

“It’s alright, Max. You’re allowed… to move on.”

Max exhaled shakily, half a sob, half relief, half devastation.

Diana smiled, soft, triumphant, almost loving.

Alicia caught the expression.

And her blood chilled.

Diana wasn’t celebrating for Max.

She was celebrating because Alicia had been removed as his bond.

Because now Diana saw an opening again.

Because Diana still wanted him.

And for the first time in months, Alicia realized the war for the kingdom might be over…but the war for hearts was not.

The moon glowed brighter.

Shadows lengthened along the edges of the terrace.

And beneath the celebration’s roar, Alicia felt a pulse of danger.

Something was coming.

Something scary.

Something hungry.

And it had waited until the queen was bound.

The moon hung low above the citadel, swollen and gold, as though curious about the new bonds forming beneath its light. The air itself thrummed with the leftover magic of Alicia and Brooke’s mating ceremony. Every stone, every banner, every breath in the courtyard still hummed with the echo of their union.

But the world did not stop simply because a Queen had been claimed.

Tonight, the rest of the kingdom shifted.

And jealousy moved like a blade between ribs.

Yuri’s Bond

Yuri stood stiffly in the Hall of Vows, fingers curled at his sides. His jaw clenched whenever someone’s gaze slid across him, no longer seeing the childhood friend who once shadowed Alicia through palace corridors, but a warrior who had fallen in trial. A man to whom the Heart had whispered no.

He hated how naked that felt.

The Moon Week maid assigned to him, Liora, approached slowly. She was soft-featured, with silver-copper hair braided over one shoulder and eyes that carried a nervous fear of him.

She bowed. “My… my lord Yuri. The Council requires we finalize the bond.”

He did not look at her at first.

“It was your scent that ruined me,” he said, voice low, almost accusing.

Liora flinched. “I did not choose that spell. The Council set us...”

“I know.” Yuri sighed through his teeth. “I know.”

She risked a glance up. “I do not want to force myself on you.”

Something in him relented. Just a little.

He stepped closer until her breath trembled against his chest.

“This bond,” he said, touching her shoulder lightly, “is not your fault. But understand...” His voice cracked slightly. “My heart was never meant to be here.”

Liora nodded. “Then I will walk with gentleness.”

It was the first time all night Yuri’s expression softened.

He took her hand.

The bond sealed in a flare of silver light, weak, hesitant, incomplete, but real. A bond not born of love, but of trials and consequences.

When the glow faded, Yuri’s wolf murmured uncertainly in his mind.

"She is not Alicia."

"No," Yuri answered quietly, "and she never will be."

But he closed his hand around Liora’s anyway.

Someone had to walk this road with him.

Max Junior Finds His Mate

Down the hall, cheers erupted in the small ceremonial chamber reserved for heirs.

Max Junior, still smelling faintly of smoke from battle, stood stunned as the young omega maiden before him touched his arm.

Her name was Lyria, small, sharp-eyed, and unafraid.

“You’re… sure?” Max Junior whispered.

Lyria grinned. “Your wolf won’t stop circling me. I think that’s a sign.”

"It is her," his wolf whispered fiercely, tail almost wagging. "Mate."

Max Junior laughed, eyes bright with sudden warmth. “Then… yes. I accept.”

Their bond flared brighter than Yuri’s, clean, warm, instinctive.

Brooke, standing off to the side as witness, nudged Max Junior with a grin. “About time someone in this family found a mate without nearly dying first.”

Max Junior shoved him lightly. “Shut up.”

But he couldn’t stop smiling.

Max and Diana

While others celebrated, two shadows stood at a balcony overlooking the courtyard. Max, arms crossed, and Diana, smiling faintly beside him.

But her smile wasn’t for the moon or the festivities.

Her eyes were on Max.

“You look… miserable,” Diana purred.

Max didn’t answer, jaw tight.

“Still hurting from the marking?” she asked softly. “Still wishing it was you?”

His amber eyes snapped to her. “Stop.”

She stepped closer.

“You were her fated mate,” she whispered. “You loved her before Brooke even knew her name. And now you stand here pretending that isn’t tearing you apart.”

He exhaled sharply. “Diana..!”

“I know the ache,” she said, leaning on the balcony beside him. “I felt it when you marked me… and again when you deserted me. That empty space in the chest. That hollow burn.”

Max swallowed hard.

“Brooke won,” Diana said gently. “But you were never meant to be second.”

“I don’t want...” Max began.

Diana placed a finger on his lips.

“You want love,” she said softly. “You want someone who looks at you like you are the only moon in their sky.”

He froze.

“But Alicia gave her heart to him,” Diana finished. “And now… she cannot take it back.”

Max looked away toward the courtyard, throat tight, breathing unsteady.

Diana’s wolf Selena whispered slyly through her mind.

"Break him open, Diana. He will seek comfort. Be there."

And Diana obeyed.
