Moon-bound Hearts
Moon-bound Hearts
Chapter 180: Moon-Bound Hearts
When the courtyard finally quieted, Alicia let the adrenaline drain from her body.
Brooke stepped close, touching her cheek gently.
“You alright?”
“Yes.”
She leaned into his palm, letting herself breathe.
Flo purred inside her mind.
"He is steady. He is ours."
Alicia swallowed, heart trembling.
“Brooke… after all this is done...our bonding ceremony, are you ready?”
His eyes warmed with something deep, soft, unshakeable.
“I’ve been ready since the day you saved my life.”
Alicia’s chest tightened. “Brooke…”
He rested his forehead against hers.
“I’ll stand with you through all of it. The crown. The battles. The consequences. I’m yours.”
Before she could speak, a flash of silver light spiraled into the courtyard.
The Watcher materialized, radiant, ageless, the air bending around it like liquid moonlight.
“Queen Alicia,” it intoned, voice echoing through their bones. “With Roderic’s bloodline subdued and the last shadow neutralized, the path is clear. The proclamation shall be completed.”
Alicia and Brooke exchanged a breathless look.
The Watcher continued.
“The bonding ceremony of Queen Alicia and Brooke of the Crescent Hallow will commence at moonrise.”
Alicia’s pulse fluttered.
Brooke’s hand tightened around hers.
“And one more decree must be spoken,” the Watcher said, turning toward the crowd. “Max Junior, step forward.”
Max Junior emerged from the soldiers, confusion tightening his features.
His wolf, a restless young flame, flickered behind his eyes.
The Watcher extended a hand.
From the shadows stepped a young omega girl, soft-eyed, trembling, with a faint glow around her.
Max Junior froze.
His breath left him in a startled exhale.
Alicia felt the energy shift, like the air itself recognized something ancient and binding.
Brooke whispered, “He’s found his mate.”
The Watcher nodded.
“The Moon Goddess chooses balance. As one bond rises, another is formed. Max Junior... your mate stands before you.”
The girl lifted her eyes, and Max Junior’s whole expression shattered into awe.
Alicia exhaled, a slow smile forming.
The kingdom, for the first time in a long while, was beginning to heal.
But as the Watcher vanished in a swirl of silver light, its last words lingered:
“With every bond formed… a debt awakens.”
Alicia stiffened.
Brooke’s fingers intertwined with hers.
The shadows around the courtyard shifted, quiet, invisible, but present.
Another cost.
Another path.
Another threat waiting to rise.
And the moon was already climbing.
The moon rose like a silver crown above the kingdom, luminous and enormous, setting the sky ablaze with pale fire. Its light spilled over the palace terraces where thousands gathered from the nobles, the warriors, the council, the healers, to the omegas. The children of the moon.
All waiting.
All breathless.
Tonight was the night the Watcher had proclaimed.
The night Alicia would bind herself, body and soul, to Brooke.
And the night every bond, every loss, every jealous longing would be exposed.
Alicia stood behind the ceremonial curtains, breathing in slowly as attendants placed silver-threaded cloth around her shoulders. Her hair, swept into a flowing cascade of moonlit waves, shimmered like living frost. Her gown was a masterpiece of woven light, soft, fluid, glowing faintly with Heart-magic.
Flo murmured softly in her mind.
"You are ready. You are chosen. And you are loved."
Alicia closed her eyes.
“Yes,” she whispered. “But why does choosing still hurt?”
Flo’s answer was gentle.
"Because love is never clean. It is never simple. It is never without a shadow."
A board creaked behind her, Brooke entering.
She turned.
And her breath caught.
Brooke stood adorned in black ceremonial armor marked with silver etchings, a mantle of dark fur draped across his shoulders. Kael glowed behind his eyes, calm, dominant, deeply protective.
He approached slowly, as if afraid to disturb the air around her.
“You look…” He swallowed. “Alicia, you look like something the moon dreamed into life.”
A faint smile tugged at her lips. “And you look like something carved to guard it.”
He brushed his knuckles along her jaw.
“Ready?”
“As I’ll ever be.”
But her heart trembled.
Not for Brooke, never for Brooke.
But for the others.
For Max.
For Yuri.
For the threads she was about to cut forever.
Before she could speak again, Elder Helena pushed aside the curtain.
“It is time. The moon is at its peak.”
Brooke took Alicia’s hand.
They walked together toward the open sky.
The ceremony platform rose above the crowd like an island of light. Silver flames danced along the perimeter, humming with ancient magic. The Watcher’s seal glowed at the center, a circular crest of shifting symbols.
As Alicia and Brooke stepped into the light, a wave of murmurs rippled through the gathering.
Max stood near the front, tense, stiff, jaw clenched.
Tawny flickered behind his eyes, restless, wounded.
Yuri lingered on Alicia’s other side, arms crossed tightly, chest rising and falling with barely-contained jealousy. His wolf, a sleek shadow, simmered behind him, pacing.
On the opposite end, Diana stood shackled in silver but permitted to witness, her face unreadable, pale, yet strangely hopeful. When Alicia’s gaze passed her, Diana gave a faint supportive nod.
“Let it happen,” she mouthed. “Then things will fall into place.”
Alicia swallowed hard.
She did not understand Diana’s newfound calm, but she didn’t have time to.
Helena raised her staff, the wind swirling with magic.
“Tonight, under the sight of the Moon Goddess and the judgment of the Watcher, the queen shall seal her Heart. Let the bond be formed.”
Brooke turned to Alicia.
And the energy shifted, magnetic, pulsing, intimate.
He lifted her hands to his lips.
“Alicia,” he whispered. “I bind myself to you. Not by fate. Not by prophecy. But by choice. My heart, my wolf, my soul...all yours.”
Kael growled in reverence.
Brooke lowered his head toward her neck.
The entire kingdom leaned forward.
Max’s breath hitched.
His hands curled into trembling fists.
Yuri shut his eyes tightly, jaw tightening.
Alicia’s pulse thundered in her ears.
“I accept you,” she whispered softly into Brooke’s ear. “Brooke of the Silver Guard. My chosen. My one.”
Flo howled inside her with joy.
Brooke’s fangs elongated, sharp, gleaming, deadly-beautiful.
He pressed them to the base of her neck, slow, reverent.
Then he bit.
Alicia gasped, her magic flaring instantly, silver light exploding outward like a shockwave. Her body convulsed, not in pain, but in overwhelming intensity. The bond snapped into place like a lightning strike.
Brooke groaned softly as Kael surged through him, sealing the connection.
Their wolves intertwined, Flo and Kael roaring with triumph.
The kingdom erupted in cheers.
But Max...he couldn’t breathe.
His knees nearly buckled as the bond snapped inside him, the lingering piece of his fated connection to Alicia tearing violently, leaving a raw, gaping wound.
Tawny howled inside his mind, a sound so agonized Max clutched his chest, teeth grit, eyes burning.
Yuri heard the sound, felt the shift, and bitterness poured through him.
He spat out, voice sharp.
“So that’s it? The great Queen chooses him, and we’re expected to smile and clap like obedient pups?”
Alicia flinched at the venom.
Before she could respond, Max spoke, voice ragged, strained.
“Yuri, stop.”
Yuri scoffed, eyes flashing.
“No. Why should I? She asked us to fight for her. She asked us to stay. And now...”
