The First Trials of Hearts

The First Trials of Hearts
CHAPTER 174: THE FIRST TRIAL OF HEARTS

A final burst of energy answered for her in form of an explosion that threw them all backward.

When the smoke cleared, Alicia stood alone, surrounded by a new symbol burnt into the ground, glowing, alive.

A sigil none of them had ever seen.

A sigil that pulsed with her name.

A moment later, Alicia staggered, grabbing her temples as a voice whispered directly into her mind:

"Queen… your trial has only begun."

The sigil carved itself into the courtyard stone as if alive, glowing with molten gold and obsidian veins that pulsed with a rhythm matching Alicia’s heartbeat. The shadows had vanished, the assassin seized, the kingdom trembling in the wake of the revelation.

But the true shock came moments later, when the Council Seers arrived, pale, shaking while whispering ancient prophecy fragments Alicia had never heard before.

A queen reborn through fire.

A choice of hearts to stabilize the kingdom.

A trial of desire that no unmated queen had faced in centuries.

Alicia tried to stay composed, but Flo murmured inside her mind with deep unease.

"This… is not a political trial. This is primal. Dangerous."

The Seers explained it quietly:

Each potential mate must spend three uninterrupted hours alone with her.

In that time, Alicia would undergo the “flare”, a surge of instinctual heat triggered by the Heart’s awakening.

The men would be tested on gentleness, truth, discipline, emotional honesty… and resistance.

If any male lost control?

He would be instantly disqualified, by the magic itself.

If all three passed?

A second, harsher trial would follow.

Brooke, Max, and Yuri accepted without hesitation, even when knowing how cruel the test could be. But when she met each of their eyes, she saw the truth:

They were terrified.

For her.

For themselves.

For what they might lose.

THE TRIAL BEGINS

In the ritual chamber, Alicia's pulse was already rising.

Flo pacing.

Heat blooming low and dangerous in her core.

She whispered, “Flo, how bad will it get?”

Flo hesitated, then admitted.

"If they touch you at the wrong time, even an innocent brush… might be enough to undo them. This trial is as much for you as it is for them."

Alicia swallowed hard.

The first door opened.

Brooke entered.

BROOKE AND THE FIRST THREE HOURS

He stepped inside with uncharacteristic hesitation, Kael quiet behind his eyes. His dark hair fell over one brow, his shirt half-unbuttoned from the previous battle. Alicia’s breath caught instantly.

“Hey,” he said softly.

One word.

Too gentle.

Too intimate.

Heat punched through her like lightning.

He approached slowly, hands visible, posture open. “Tell me how much it hurts.”

“It doesn’t...hurt,” she managed. “It’s just… overwhelming.”

He exhaled. “Then let me ground you.”

He knelt at her feet, not touching, but close enough that she felt the warmth of him wrap around her like a blanket.

Kael rumbled with quiet devotion.

Alicia trembled. The flare worsened, waves of heat rolling through her, urging her to lean forward, to touch him, to let instinct take over. Brooke’s eyes darkened with the effort of holding himself back.

“Alicia,” he whispered, voice thick, “I won’t fail you. Tell me what you need.”

Her fingers twitched toward him.

She snatched them back.

Brooke inhaled sharply, closing his eyes for a long moment. When he reopened them, tears glimmered at the corners.

“You’re fighting your body,” he said. “Let me help you breathe.”

He guided her, voice steady, presence anchoring, through grounding breaths while keeping a full arm’s distance.

Later, when the heat peaked, he gripped the floor so hard his knuckles bled, jaw clenched, sweat rolling down his temples as Kael howled inside him.

But he never touched her.

Not once.

Not even when she whispered his name like a plea.

And when the bell rang signaling the end, Brooke staggered backward, chest heaving with restraint.

“Alicia,” he said hoarsely, “whether I’m chosen or not… I am yours to protect. Always.”

Then he left.

Flo whispered, "He passed!"

But the heat didn’t subside.

It grew.

MAX: THE SECOND THREE HOURS

Max entered shirtless, sweat still drying from the fight outside. Tawny prowled fiercely behind his eyes.

Alicia’s breath hitched.

Her knees nearly buckled.

Max froze mid-step.

“Licia…” His voice cracked. “You’re burning.”

“I can handle it,” she lied.

He growled softly, not at her, but at the torture of seeing her struggle.

Without touching, he removed his cloak and draped it near her feet, creating a soft barrier. Then he sat opposite her, spine straight, palms flat against the ground.

“Look at me.”

His tone was firm but tender.

She obeyed instantly.

“For three hours,” he said, “I am your wall. Lean as close as you need, but I won’t cross that line.”

She didn’t trust herself.

But she stepped forward anyway.

Sitting only inches from him made the flare spike violently, white-hot and dizzying. Her breathing turned ragged. Max’s did too.

Tawny’s growl filled his mind. "Claim her!"

Max forced the wolf back with visible effort, muscles trembling.

At one point, Alicia swayed dangerously with instinct demanding she touch him, take him, end the ache. Max caught himself leaning forward...

Then slammed his hand into the floor instead, cracking the stone.

“Alicia,” he rasped, clinging to control, “please… don’t say my name right now.”

But she did.

“Max…”

His entire body shuddered, nearly lost.

But he closed his eyes, forced his wolf down, and whispered:

“Not like this. Not when you could regret it. I love you too much to fail this way.”

By the time the bell rang, Max was shaking, drenched in sweat, jaw locked.

He stood slowly, eyes full of raw devotion.

“You are worth every battle,” he said. “Even the ones against myself.”

He left without looking back.

Flo whispered, "He passed!"

Alicia nearly collapsed.

YURI : THE FINAL THREE HOURS

When Yuri walked in, the heat surged so sharply she gasped.

He froze, concern flooding his face. “Alicia.”

His wolf, a quiet silver presence, pressed forward with anxious devotion.

Yuri didn’t speak immediately. He simply moved a pillow behind her back, then sat cross-legged in front of her, close, but carefully distanced.

“You’ve been strong enough all day,” he murmured. “Let me carry this one.”

Alicia’s eyes stung.

Yuri always saw too much.

He gently offered his hand, but kept it hovering, not touching.

“If you ask, I’ll pull back. If you need closeness, I’ll stay. But I will not take advantage of this heat.”

His voice was so soft she trembled.

At one point, when the flare became unbearable and she doubled over, Yuri leaned forward instinctively...then stopped himself with a violent jerk, breathing hard.

He whispered something she almost missed:

“I’ve wanted you all my life… but not like this. Not when you’re fighting yourself.”

Alicia’s heart cracked open.

He told her stories from childhood, reminding her of simpler times, indulging in distraction through warmth and memory instead of desire.

It worked.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Three hours later, when the bell rang, Yuri was pale, exhausted, but smiling.

“You survived all three trials,” he whispered. “Even if the next breaks us all… I’m proud of you.”

Flo whispered, "He passed!"

Alicia exhaled a shaky breath.

Then everything went wrong.
