Chapter 256. The Baby Is Safe

Chapter 256. The Baby Is Safe
"There’s nothing I can do for you." William lowered his head until his forehead nearly touched her shoulder. "You’re suffering this much from the pregnancy, and all I can do is sit here and watch."

Mira looked at the crown of his dark head, and her heart softened completely.

William was usually overbearing, and his mouth could be downright infuriating. She rarely saw him show this kind of vulnerability. But right now, he looked exactly like a wounded beast, pitiful enough that she could not bring herself to blame him.

She gently raised a hand and ran her fingers through his hair.

"It’s only morning sickness. Every pregnant woman has to go through this stage. I was ready for it from the moment I found out I was pregnant."

"But I can’t stand seeing you suffer."

Mira could not hold back her laugh. And after laughing, she felt a sharp sting in the bridge of her nose.

She rested her head against his shoulder and said softly, "When you’re like this, it makes me want to laugh and feel touched at the same time. Don’t worry. I’m already feeling better now."

William gently rubbed her back. "Then let me tell you a joke."

Mira fell silent for a few seconds, then gave a quiet "Mm."

To be honest, William’s jokes were terribly dry, sometimes to the point of making no sense. But somehow, just hearing his voice eased the nausea and discomfort in her stomach.

Maybe the baby liked listening to its father’s painfully bad jokes.

Meanwhile, back at Crimsonvein Castle, Regulus stood before the window, his face darkening.

For the past three days, William had quite clearly reduced his contact with the Council of Elders.

Whenever the council summoned him, he either gave perfunctory replies or pushed the matter off onto someone else. This morning, he had not even gone to the Blood Chamber according to the usual schedule. And with William’s personality, the quieter he became, the more it meant he was hiding something important.

Regulus had once believed he understood his son. At least, he had always thought so.

But ever since everything involving Mira, he had begun to realize more and more that William was no longer the boy raised within Crimsonvein’s rigid rules. For one girl, he had dared to stand against the entire council, dared to cast aside the Bloodheart, dared to turn himself into a thorn in the eyes of every elder. And now, he was hiding something else as well.

Regulus closed his eyes for a few seconds, then opened them again.

"Prepare the car."

The subordinate outside immediately obeyed. Then Regulus added coldly, "No one follows me."

He wanted to see for himself exactly what William was trying so hard to hide.

William’s car came to a stop in a secluded building behind Crimsonvein’s old medical complex.

This place had long since fallen out of public use. Only those within the direct bloodline knew that behind those gray stone walls, there was still a private clinic kept hidden away for the most confidential cases.

The moment Mira stepped out of the car, she caught the faint scent of antiseptic. The nausea rose in her again at once. William barely let her feet touch the ground before he scooped her up in his arms and carried her straight inside.

The doctor waiting for them was a middle-aged woman in a white coat, reserved in manner and not inclined to ask unnecessary questions.

She only looked at Mira, then at William, and dipped her head slightly.

“Young master.”

William did not let go of Mira. His voice was tight with strain. “Give her a full examination. I want to know if the baby in her womb is all right, whether her body can handle the pregnancy, and whether there are any abnormal signs related to her bloodline.”

The doctor nodded.

Mira was taken into a private examination room. Throughout the entire process, William did not leave her side for even a second. He stood beside the examination bed, staring at every move the doctor made so intently that anyone watching might have thought he was the one being examined.

Only after the doctor had finished everything did she finally let out a breath.

“The pregnancy is stable. The baby’s vitality is very strong.”

William had barely had time to breathe himself before she continued, “But her body is still weak. Morning sickness is a normal reaction. In the first few weeks of pregnancy, it is very easy for the mother to become exhausted. So her emotions must not be thrown into too much turmoil, and she needs plenty of rest.”

William pressed on at once. “Then does she need to stay here? Should she get an injection to make her feel better? In her daily routine, does she need someone with her around the clock to take care of her?”

The doctor looked momentarily choked by the barrage of questions before she answered, “For now, no. What she needs most is rest.”

Lying on the bed, Mira turned her head to look at him, honestly unsure whether she should feel sorry for William or laugh. It looked as though the doctor had nearly been overwhelmed by him.

After the doctor left, only the two of them remained in the room.

William sat down beside the bed and took Mira’s hand in his. His fingers were so cold that she shivered faintly.

“I’m sorry.”

Mira looked at him. “What are you apologizing for?”

“Because you’re carrying my child, and that’s why you have to suffer like this. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have needed to...”

“Don’t say that!” Mira hurriedly covered William’s mouth. “Even if the baby is only as big as a little bean right now, it can still hear things, or at least feel the malice of the people around it. If it knows you don’t want it, then after it’s born, it won’t let you hold it.”

William pouted. “Then fine, I won’t hold it. I only want to hold my wife.”
