Chapter 255. A Secret Checkup

Chapter 255. A Secret Checkup
Early the next morning, William arrived at the Wulfhart estate.

When the butler led him in, Jacintha was sitting in the living room with Mira. Mira had only managed a few spoonfuls of soup before she had to set the spoon down again. Her face looked a little pale, and her brows were drawn tight. Jacintha gently rubbed her back, worry written all over her face.

The moment William stepped inside, his gaze went straight to Mira. He walked directly over to her, bent down, and placed a cool hand against her forehead, as if he needed to check for himself whether she had a fever.

“Did you throw up again?”

Mira looked up at him. “I did a little this morning.”

William’s expression darkened at once. His eyes filled with distress, as though the one in pain was not Mira, but him.

Just then, Raphael came down from upstairs and stopped behind the sofa. He looked at William and said evenly, “Everything’s been arranged.”

William gave a slight nod.

Jacintha frowned. “Arranged what?”

Raphael sat down beside her and answered, “William is taking Mira for another checkup. Her morning sickness was really bad today.”

Mira tensed immediately. “Didn’t I already get checked yesterday?”

“The hospital at Wulfhart only confirmed that you’re pregnant.” William closed his hand around hers. “I’m not at ease. I want to take you to Crimsonvein’s private medical facility. They have equipment there to monitor both the fetus and the mother’s condition in special cases like yours.”

Jacintha’s brows knitted at once. “Weren’t you trying to keep the people at Crimsonvein from finding out that Mira is pregnant? Then why are you taking her onto their territory?”

William answered calmly, “That place belongs to me alone. No one on the council of elders can step inside without my permission. The doctors there take orders from me and no one else.”

From where he stood behind them, Raphael added, “I already had people check it. It’s safe.”

Only then did Jacintha relax a little, though her hand still clung to Mira’s arm.

“You’d better bring her back to me in one piece.”

William answered without hesitation. “I know.”

After finishing her light breakfast, Mira felt that her stomach had settled a little. She stood up and said to William, “Let’s go.”

William rose at once. Then he suddenly paused, as if something had just come back to him. His eyes flicked toward the window, where, not far beyond the iron fence of Wulfhart, a few unfamiliar cars had been appearing often these past few days.

They were the tails Crimsonvein had sent. Lately, his frequent visits to the Wulfhart estate had probably drawn their attention.

William let out a soft, cold laugh. Then, in front of everyone, he suddenly bent down and swept Mira up into his arms.

Startled, Mira hurriedly wrapped her arms around his neck. “William! I can walk on my own.”

“Don’t move.”

His voice was low, and all around the tip of her nose was the warmth of his breath.

William carried her straight outside. Just before stepping through the front doors, he deliberately raised his voice, cold enough for everyone around to hear clearly.

“Her heart condition has flared up again. Bring the car here now.”

Mira froze for a second, then understood immediately. He was lying, saying that her heart condition had returned. In truth, ever since William had given her the Heart-Sigil, her illness had never relapsed again. When she had gone for her checkup, even the doctor had been surprised to find that she had fully recovered.

As long as the people watching outside believed that Mira’s old illness had returned, they would only think William was rushing her to the hospital and would never suspect that he was taking her there for any other reason.

Sure enough, the moment housekeeper Cindy heard William say it, she played along without missing a beat. She immediately called for the gates to be opened and loudly instructed the doctor and the driver to prepare an oxygen tank and emergency medication.

Resting against William’s chest, Mira suddenly felt something strange rise in her heart.

This man had always acted with a kind of arrogant, overbearing certainty. But ever since he had learned she was pregnant, every step he took had become careful and restrained.

The car left the Wulfhart estate quickly.

After they had gone some distance, William switched to another car that had been waiting in a narrow alley behind the estate. The whole exchange took less than two minutes.

Mira had barely settled into the back seat before a wave of nausea rose straight to her throat. She quickly turned her head to the side and clapped a hand over her mouth.

William’s expression changed at once. One hand supported her back while the other stayed tight on the steering wheel, his voice already trembling. "Mira... Mira, do you feel really awful?"

Mira only managed to shake her head once before bending over again in a dry heave.

She did not throw up much, mostly just the sour acid in her stomach. But at the mere sight of her like that, William’s eyes had already turned red, and clear tears slipped from the corners of his eyes.

When Mira finally lifted her head with difficulty, she saw it. She forced out a comforting smile and said, "Why are you crying again? People always say a pregnant woman’s emotions are unstable, but nobody ever says the baby’s father can be this unpredictable too."

William turned his face away a little, as if trying to hide it, but he could not.

"I wish I could take every bit of the morning sickness for you."

Mira was exhausted, but she could not help finding it a little funny. William still kept his hand at her back, his voice thick with emotion. "I feel so useless."

"Don’t say that. If you’re useless, then what are the people who are actually useless supposed to be?"

Mira was at a loss for words. William excelled in school and in sports, and he still dared to call himself useless?
