Chapter 24 the reason of his question
Amelia’s P.O.V. (Continued)
He stopped abruptly, making me crash on his chest. I hit my head hard on his chest. The world around me swayed badly and I lost my footing.
“Easy.” He grumbled and held me tightly by my waist. I held my head, closing my eyes and leaned on him.
The familiar feeling of being strangled by that man back then engulfed my heart again.
“Take a deep breath, Amelia. Breathe now.” He instructed gently, but the ringing in my head grew louder.
“Amelia, breathe. No one is going to hurt you,” he instructed again, stroking my back, but it only made me tremble hard in fear.
He suddenly put my head on his chest. “Listen to my heartbeat, Amelia. Concentrate on your own heartbeat. This will ease your anxiety.” He asked softly, pressing my head there.
Suddenly a strong and rhythmic sound echoed in my ear. I stopped struggling and concentrated on that voice.
It was as strong as that man’s, but it was steady and his was erratic.
I don’t know why I always felt this familiarity, but it only made me more afraid of the king.
He continued stroking my back while I concentrated on his heartbeat. It took me a few minutes, I guess, to calm down, but I stopped trembling and my heartbeat returned to normal.
“Let me go.” I whispered and slowly tried to move away from him.
“Why is your heartbeat weak?” he asked me while moving me away from him.
I didn’t answer him, though. He is intelligent enough to get the answer on his own.
“Arthur gave me a medicine during the meeting. What was that for?” he asked me again, and I huffed while creating a little distance between us.
If it weren’t for the fact that he was the king, I would have questioned his intelligence openly.
“I, sometimes, have severe headaches.” I told him in a low voice, rubbing my head a little.
“Their symptoms and severity?” he asked and I felt another headache coming to me.
“Why are we here, my king?” I asked him in resignation, tired with everything that was happening around me.
“Why do you always avoid my concern for you?” he asked me angrily.
“And why do you ask so many questions, my king?” I was now completely frustrated and my head was killing me.
The relief that I got a few seconds ago was completely gone and I had no courage to lean on him again.
“You called me Alexander earlier when you were angry.” He remarked and I sighed while lowering my head.
“I apologize for my outburst and disrespect, my king. I was dizzy and disoriented. You suddenly started dragging me, making me lose my momentum,” I explained my situation truthfully.
He didn’t say a word for a while.
My mind was still wandering about what Alpha Noel predicted about my pup.
If he has noticed it just by looking at my body, would it be possible that more people have noticed it?
Will it put his life in danger?
“Forget for a few minutes that I am the king, Amelia. Just lean on me.” He asked me in a low and concerned tone.
I wanted to refuse, but I did what he asked. I thought about Sylvia. She is the one who always provided me a shoulder to lean on whenever I had this kind of situation.
My eyes were still closed. I didn’t move from my place but sensed him coming closer to me.
“What did he ask you?” he asked me in the same low and concerned voice, holding my shoulders so lightly that it only felt an illusion.
Without thinking much, I leaned on him. My forehead hit his chest, and I took a deep breath.
His scent, a mix of wet pine and cinnamon, calmed my wrecking nerves immediately.
“Your scent. It’s calming.” I mumbled absentmindedly and took a few more deep breaths, filling my lungs with his scent.
“Melanie was his cousin’s daughter. After her death, Melanie’s mother became insane and threw her off a high building, screaming that her daughter was in so much pain and was calling her.” He spoke in a calm voice, but I understood whom he was referring to here.
“From that day onward, her whole family declared a war against The Black Hawk Pack. Her mate, Alpha Zane Foster, is still searching for that pup. His only aim is to kill his daughter. You don’t know, but Anthony Collins is in cahoots with Zane.”
I sucked in a breath when I realized the severity of the situation. The girl was in real danger, and now I understood why Noel insisted on keeping her whereabouts secret at any cost.
“He will never find her.” I assured him in a whisper, feeling the strong thumping against my forehead.
“But your group will be attacked soon. Anthony would have informed Zane already.” He remarked, sounding troubled.
“Will I be punished if I kill him if he attacks us?” I asked him and he laughed.
“What do you think?” he asked me while laughing. His chest vibrated, sending the sensation to every fiber in my body.
For the first time in four years, I felt at peace.
As if I had found my way back to home.
“I have already announced on the royal forum that your group is under my protection until we make a decision about converting your group in a pack. Zane knows the consequences of going against me.” He told me and I smiled this time.
“Feeling better now?” he asked after some time.
I was when I realized that I was leaning on him for a long time.
“Yeah. Thanks fo… for everything.” I was really grateful to him.
I slowly moved away from him and took a deep breath before opening my eyes.
To my surprise, the headache was completely gone, and my vision was clearer than before.
“My king.” Edwin’s voice came from the other side of the corridor.
“Let Edwin escort you to your room, Amelia. Rest for now. We will meet for lunch again.” He instructed me while going to the other side of the corridor.
I wanted to refuse, but now I knew that it would be a futile attempt.
“As you wish, my king.” I mumbled in resignation.
