Chapter 35
FRED
.
"Alpha Jed of the Blue Crescent pack has escaped!"
Asher's word resounded over and over again. How is this even possible? How did he manage to manacle the chain of his dungeon and get past the tight sentinels out there in the palace.
Asher was raging. He has managed to subdue the wolf alright but he can tell from the looks on his face that it's not over yet.
"How did this happen?" I asked, looking around the faces of the entire members of the council.
If Jed was able to escape so swiftly then it only means that it was an inside job. Someone helped him escape. But who? And what was the reason?
Something is definitely fishy and I'm not even ready to dive into that yet.
"We all have to prepare. If Jed managed to escape then it only means that he'll be back. I know that man. He doesn't disappoint. He'll come at us and makes sure that our entire clan is jeopardized. He'll come back looking for revenge for what we did to his clan and he won't rest till he's had it" I arched my brows at them trying to look to see if someone would give even the slightest expression but their faces were focused and serious as well.
"I. Will. Kill. Him." Asher hissed.
The other members shifted uncomfortably on their seat. I could feel the rapid beat of their heart and I could smell their fear as well. It clothed them like a second skin.
I took the opportunity to alert the guards that were assigned to his dungeons and they rushed in as soon as they were summoned.
"How did he escape?" I asked softly as I waited for their reply. They looked at themselves and back at me.
"Speak!" Asher barked fiercely "Or your heads will no longer be a part of your body at this Instant" he threatened. His eyes glowed red at that statement.
"And how was it that he passed without any of you even picking up his foul scent?" I asked again after the first question hasn't been answered yet.
"We don't know My lord. We swear on our lives!" They bowed their heads as they begged profusely. I closed my eyes and let my wolf listen before snapping it back open.
"I said—"
"They're telling the truth Asher. They honestly have no idea" I interrupt him sharply before he would pounce on them.
"Who entered his chambers other than yourselves last night?"
"We were served food by a maid and that was it. We even received it at the gate so that she wouldn't come inside." One of the sentinels explained.
"Did you leave for anything while on duty last night?"
"No my lord" They replied in unison
"And what about the maid that served you? Did you see her face?" I inquired and they shook their heads hesitantly.
"I don't recognize but I think that maybe I might be able to point her out if I should see her"
"We'll assemble every slave and servant in this palace that would've helped Jed escape and if you recognize her then please say so immediately" I ordered and he nods vigorously.
"Good"
With Asher's command, every maid was assembled. Ranging from cooks, to cleaners and even the slaves. They all lined up and I asked the guards to take a closer look at them and point out the one he recognizes as the traitor, but after a long time of investigating, he didn't pick anyone.
"She's not here" he announced sadly.
"What???" Asher yelled angrily.
"Calm down brother" I whisper softly. "We'll think of way okay?"
Asher quickly stood up from his chair and stormed out of the courtroom. The minute he left, I adjourned the meeting after demanding that everyone be alert and extra careful. We still don't know what Jed is planning and I don't want to take chances.
I leave the courtroom and rushed straight into Asher's room. I open the door to see him pacing round his bedroom.
He notices my presence but doesn't even bother to look at me.
"You cannot be a good leader like father if you get angry at the slightest and storm out of a court meeting before it is even finished" I admonished calmly and poured him a glass of water which I handed over to him.
He took it with a glare and gulped down the entire content.
"So you wanted me to stay there and listen to their rubbish?"
"Please don't shout" I plead "I'm still recovering"
"I wonder how you ended up as the Beta of this pack. You are too soft and always unbothered"
I sigh softly "If by that you mean that I'm levelheaded then thank you for the compliment"
He eyes me closely. I can clearly see the fury in his eyes.
"Fine. Because I don't show it doesn't mean that I'm okay Asher. I'm just as pissed off as you are. He killed my parents too" I remind him because he seems to have forgotten that they were my parents too.
"But anger doesn't solve anything as far as I'm concerned. We should think of a way to solve this and not get angry over what we cannot control" I advised and he stopped pacing. He walked back to his chair and lowers himself on it. His black hair fell slightly on his face as his face tightens.
"What do we do Fred? This is beyond me" he breathes out. For the first time, I see the pain in his eyes as he spoke. This is the first time I've seen Asher like this. He's always the one with a plan so I'm baffled.
"We take a pause"
His eyes snaps at me immediately I made that statement.
"Are you proposing that we just sit and watch?" He asked in disbelief.
"Exactly" I reply nonchalantly.
Asher looks like he doesn't understand a single word and that I'm just speaking nonsense.
"That's the only way we'd figure out what's going on so until then, just chill and let me handle everything the way I want to" I tell him and we both just stood there staring at each other.
