Chapter 150 My soul
Chapter 150 My soul
ELARA’S POV.
I turned to look at Beros, panic flashing in my eyes. “You went to the abyss?”
Before Beros could answer me, Nyxar spoke again
“Yes he did, dear Elara” his tone mocking. He derived satisfaction from the look on my face and me – I was too stunned to speak. Beros had gone to the abyss? The same abyss he had vehemently refused me going to.
Maybe that was why he had been so adamant about it, he had gone there and done things, things I didn’t know, things that he knew would be revealed if I had gone there myself.
“What did you do Beros? Tell me” I grabbed his arm and shook him this time, forcing him to tear his attention away from Nyxar.
As he looked at me, I saw his expression soften for a split second, before hardening again.
He turned to face Nyxar without a word.
“Get out of here Nyxar, all you do is leave destruction in your wake, be gone”.
Nyxar raised his hands up in mock obedience. All he did was mock us and flaunt his power, that was all he came here to do.
“Okay okay, I’ll go” he said, taking a few steps backwards before turning to look at me “but make sure you get the truth out of him Elara, he’s a liar, just like I am”.
And with that, there was a chill in the air and he was gone, just like that. The black magic was gone too, disappeared along with him, the only evidence of him being here were the wounds on my wolves.
____________
“Beros, what did Nyxar mean?” I asked him now that everything had settled down. The injured wolves had been tended to and everything that had been destroyed in the fight was being fixed.
The wards of protection were reinforced by me, making sure not even Nyxar’s black magic could get through it this time.
Alicent was in the tent with Beros and I, waiting for an explanation from him.
“Beros, you have to tell me what happened?” I urged him again.
He sighed softly “it’s in the past Elara, you don’t need to know about it”
Anger began to tear its ugly head in me but I stifled it, it wouldn’t lead me to getting the answers I needed.
“No Beros, I have to know about it, we promised not to keep any secrets from each other, you have to tell me” my voice was so calm, the opposite of the raging war in my heart.
I couldn’t help but think about what Beros might have sacrificed, what kind of being he must have met, to be able to bring me back. What had he done? How did he bind our souls together? And if Beros wasn’t going to give me the answer, I would pressure Aethon until he spoke.
Beros glanced at Alicent and I before starting to speak again.
“Yes, I went to the abyss”. My heart sank, he had actually gone to that horrible place, but that wasn’t what bothered me. What bothered me was what he had to sacrifice. The abyss was powerful, but it always took, it was a taker, always clutching to any living thing and draining it.
Last time before I pushed Nyxar and sealed him in there, Beros and I had joined our powers together, and even then, I had deliberately used most of my essence unknowingly to Beros, which led to me dying.
Now that Beros had gone and came back unscathed. How? What did he do?
“What did you do there?”
He raised his head up to look at me before lowering it back down. “I went to get you back”.
“I know that much Beros, but what exactly did you do?” He was quiet again for several minutes so I continued to speak.
“You can’t have hidden this much from me Beros, I deserve to know what sacrifices you made, you’ve already done too much it weighs on me, what else could you have done. You must – you must tell me, what did you do?” I couldn’t hold it in me anymore. With the appearance of Nyxar and this new revelation, everything was overwhelming.
What if? What if Nyxar was right and Beros had sacrificed something that would be detrimental to him.
“Do you remember what Nyxar said about where you went? When you lost your soul?” His voice calm and quiet.
I nodded “yes, yes I do”.
“That – that was where you were”.
The breath left my lungs “what?” I managed to choke out.
He nodded his head. “The abyss, that’s where you were, it – it took you. I saw it happen”
“But how?” I couldn’t bring myself to believe it. I thought I had ceased to exist. How was it possible? This was – this wasn’t what I had expected to hear.
“When you lost your soul, I watched you fade into nothing before my eyes, but then I saw a piece of you, a piece of your soul float away. I followed it. I couldn’t grasp it. So I followed it. I knew it was all I had left of you. You slipped right through my hands when I held you, and when you finally stopped floating, it was at the entrance to the abyss”.
My ears burned with this information, but Beros continued.
“You hovered gently – the piece of your soul, as if recognizing me, as if begging me to save you from your fate, but so couldn’t “ his voice became strained, but he continued talking.
“You – I watched it swallow you whole. I tried to go in after you, but it didn’t – it wouldn’t let me, something didn’t let me pass. It was as if the keeper of the abyss knew I would try to, and for the first time in millenniums, the abyss rejected something – me”
The blood in my body went cold. The abyss had rejected Beros. Had rejected him just after swallowing me.
“Wh – what?” I half chucked, half choked out, looking at Alicent before looking back at Beros.
“What? I don’t – I don’t understand, the abyss rejected you?”
He nodded once again.
“But – but why?”
“Because it wanted a sacrifice, I tried for 3000 years, to enter, it didn’t work, until I made the sacrifice”
I felt the color drain from my face.
“And – and what was the sacrifice?”.
Beros looked at me and held eye contact for the first time since Nyxar had appeared.
“My soul – I sacrificed my soul”
