126. Impossible Task
I stare at him as he looks up at me with those big wet luminous eyes of his. His brother? Did he mean the Crown Prince Zander? He was young, so he must be the second son, Prince Zidane. Did something happened to the Crown Prince that he was now needing my help? It had to be something serious if they needed me. But how did they even know who I was and what I could do?
Stop questioning and let’s do it! Our prince is asking for our assistance! Who cares how he found out about us! Radolf immediately yells in my mind with determination in his tone.
He was getting no argument from me. I quickly nod my head at him. “I’ll do mt best, your highness.” I quickly say.
I look down at Micah, who was looking at prince Zidane with sad eyes. He gets out of my lap and crouches down to his level since he was still kneeling on the ground. He reaches up a small hand to caress his wet cheek.
“No, cry.” He says to him.
Prince Zidane blinks at the child, then gives him a small smile. “I’m okay.” His voice wobbles.
I quickly get up as Zidane stands to look up at me with hope in his eyes. I wasn’t sure if I was able to do what he was expecting me to do. But looking down at him, I truly hoped that I could.
He doesn’t say a word as he grabs my hand and rushes us to the hanging sheet. He quickly pushes it aside and I nearly falter in my step as I stare in disbelief of the young man that was lying on a makeshift bed. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, but there was a heavy bandage wrapped around his ribs.
Looking at his condition, he was pale, deathly pale. In fact, he looked dead. His lips were purple, his skin that blue tinted discolored look. But more than that, his entire body was covered in those same ugly looking black veins that Derek had been covered with. But unlike Derek, there was no skin left untouched by the poison.
I snap my eyes to Zidane as he instantly went to his brother’s side. His eyes still brimmed with tears as he says eagerly,
“He’s here, Zandy. Not too much longer now. Just hang out a little longer. You’ll feel better in no time.”
I couldn’t help but look to Derek, who was standing beside me. His face was contorted with sorrow and realization. He carefully looks to me with a pitying gaze, knowing there was no way to save him.
Because he was already gone. And Prince Zidane was in total denial.
I quickly look back to him as he states, “He was hunting when he was suddenly attacked by rogues. They were infected with the disease that is currently spreading throughout the lands. He was days away from home and by the time they got him back they announced him…” He quickly looks away and back to his brother.
“When I visited him in his royal chamber, I just knew he wasn’t gone.” He looks back to me, tears falling. “I know he looks it, but he isn’t dead. I just know he isn’t. So, please…”
“I-I’ll try my best.” I whisper, not knowing what else to do.
I go onto Prince Zander’s other side and stare down at his cold lifeless body. I wasn’t even sure what I need to start doing.
Let’s just try shifting first, and I’ll take over from there. Radolf answers.
I look up to everyone that was now crowding the entrance. Swallowing hard, I say. “May I get a little privacy? I’m going to shift.”
“Of course.” Zidane immediately stands back up and ushers everyone out, besides Derek, and closes the curtain. “Just call for me when you’re done.” He says.
I quickly look to my mate and he sees the panic in my eyes. “I don’t know if I can do this-I don’t think-he looks dead-I-.”
He cups my face into his hands and kisses me hard to get me to shut up. His eyes stare boldly into mine. “Even so, you still have to try. Try to do your hardest and when the time comes, then Prince Z will know the truth and finally have to accept it. There’s nothing more you can do other than to just try.”
He’s right. Let’s just do our best for him.
I nod my head to them both and inhale deeply, just to release it slowly. “Okay, I’ll try.” I whisper.
“You got this.” He smiles sadly at me and lets me go.
I quickly take off my clothes and shift, letting Radolf take over. He trots up to Zander and carefully sniffs him as Derek informs Zidane that I was ready. I don’t pay attention to anyone other than the body in front of us.
What do you think?
Hm. I can’t sense any life from him. There’s too much poison in his system. This may be a lost cause already. He says sadly.
We get closer to the body and sniff some more until Radolf was able to find where the poison had entered. Zidane quickly removes the bandage that reveals a chunk of missing flesh where he must have been mauled. And it was black all in and around it as the poison sat there festering.
I was curious how he wasn’t able to withstand against the rogues. He was the Prince, a Crown Prince, and on top of that a pure White wolf. So how did he let them get the best of him like this?
Maybe it was the same with him as it was with what happened with us.
You mean how we were disconnected from each other? I still don’t understand how that happened, though.
It wouldn’t make sense in any other way. Something had to have prevented him from shifting into his wolf to get attacked like this. Not just him, but his guards as well.
I frown at what Radolf was telling me. Was he saying that they had planned this attack? That treason had been made? That highly worried me. If that was true, then someone wanted the Crown Prince dead.
Prince Zidane.
Was this the reason why he was now hiding? Because he knew something.
I don’t think our saliva is really going to work on this. Its too deep and too exposed.
What are you suggesting?
Hm. I hate to say it and our mate isn’t going to be too keen on it either. He grumbles in discomfort.
What is it?
I’ll have to lick the poison out as much as possible. But we may get infected ourselves.
I inwardly flinch at that. Will we be able to withstand it?
I don’t know. Think that kid could make another antidote?
Radolf looks to where everyone, but the younger children, was standing. Among them was Jonah. We trot to him and lick his hand to get his attention. He looks down at us with wide eyes.
“Do you need me to do something?” He asks uncertainly.
Radolf blows his nose in answer. Safina gasps, making us look at her. Her eyes were wide with understanding.
