CHAPTER HUNDRED FOUR
Aros pov
We are only five days in, but it seems like Enya is handling the heat like a champ. Besides, she's been feeling much better for a few hours now, so I think the heat will be over by the end of the day. That would be perfect because I was forced to move Vince to another cell- since he's been raging for three days. He hasn't told me why he's been acting like an idiot, but I have a feeling it isn't just about the heat and his wolf wanting to break out. He wouldn't try to get to Enya's father if it was about those things. As soon as the heat stops, I'm getting Vince over here and drag his ass through the packhouse if he refuses to tell me what happened.
On the bright side, Brent is fine, he was discharged from the hospital yesterday, and our baby is healthy. These days have forced me to face reality and accept things as they are. Bit by bit, I'm coming to terms with the idea of becoming a father, and the slight bump that is already impossible to overlook makes me smile. Brent is so excited; that he's already left the pack to buy baby clothes. I didn't want to let him go, but he kept grumbling that he wouldn't be able to go out and enjoy an entire shopping trip if the baby bump was too noticeable. No one will believe this muscular man has a beer belly.
I've been sitting in the kitchen for a couple of hours, but it's not until the servants enter the kitchen that I remember that I came here to get something to eat. I get up and go to the fridge to grab something. As I close the door, I almost flinch- Enya managed to sneak up on me. "Jesus, couldn't you give a man some space, you creep?" I whine as a slight smile spreads across her lips.
Enya shakes her head. Lately, I've noticed that she's just as much of a grown woman as she is a child. When Enya is on the battleground- you won't find someone who's more focused or better than her. However, when she encounters everyday situations, she acts like a child. I suppose that's because she had to suppress herself and her feelings for years, and now she can finally be who she wants to be without being pressured to be someone else. It's cute but a little annoying at times. Enya grabs the apple I was holding and jumps on the kitchen counter. Every time I told her she shouldn't sit there, Enya would remind me that Vince let her. Now, I'm not going to go against an Alpha's word, but I'm not going to waste my time going to the cells and checking with him to make sure she's not lying. "No. I'm no longer in pain; the fever is gone, and I miss Vince. When can I go to the cells and drag him upstairs?" She bites into my apple and grins again. Damn, that was the last stupid apple, and I wanted it so bad.
I shrug. "After an hour or two? I don't know; I'm just guessing."
I don't have much experience with women in heat, but I've met a few in a pack. Actually, I don't understand how I didn't figure out I'd be mated to a man if I never felt tempted by the scent of women when they were in heat. Something inside me snaps, and suddenly, I feel annoyed by everything. It's not about the stupid apple of these questions, but I can't wrap my mind around the reason for my sudden change of attitude. It's like everything pisses me off, and even the colour of the wallpaper annoys me.
"You're the wolf; shouldn't you be supposed to know?" Enya raises an eyebrow at me. I wish I could warn her shortly before the moment my mood shifts, so she doesn't have to feel like she's responsible for it, but even I don't know when it will.
''No, to each their own. I'll give you an approximate time frame because you need to make sure another wave doesn't come back. The heat is just like you- unpredictable and annoying." I don't mean those words. Well, partly- Enya is unpredictable, but she's not nearly as annoying as I sound right now. It's like I have this deep need to belittle her for no reason at all. Even I don't understand why the fuck am I behaving like such an asshole.
"I'm not that bad." She whispers under her breath.
I throw my hands up and groan. "And I'm not tired from taking care of you and Vince for the past five days. Come on, give me a break and do something useful. Do the dishes, wash the floors, or do the laundry for the pack- just about anything. Otherwise, you're just walking around here, wasting space and resources. You're just a leech, Enya. Always have been, always will be." I have no idea where the words came from, but those aren't mine. I've never thought of Enya as a leech or someone who's not doing anything for the pack. As a matter of fact, she's done more for all of us in one week than some of the pack members have done in their entire lives. What the hell is wrong with me? Why am I acting so weird and hateful all of a sudden?
My eyes widen as Enya's face falls and a few tears roll down her cheeks. "Okay, I'm sorry. I won't get in your way again." She whispers, jumping off the kitchen counter and running away from me.
As she turns the corner, the realisation hits me. I've forced her to leave. "Enya, wait, I didn't mean it like that!" I yell, but she can't hear me anyway. I grab the apple she left on the counter and throw it against the wall. "Damn it!"
I'm about to grab a plate and throw it against the wall when a sick laugh and clapping catches my attention. Allison appears out of nowhere and looks at me like she just witnessed the best joke in action. "Isn't that great? Man, I have to tell you about this trick I learned from the local witch: You can make others say what you want them to say," she holds her stomach as he laughs, and everything falls into place. No wonder I didn't understand why I said those words- all because of that bitch.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" I force the words through gritted teeth as I clench my hands into fists. At this point, I don't care that she's a woman- I'd hit a bitch if I had to. No fucking regrets.
"Isn't it obvious?" Allison rolls her eyes and leans against the wall. "I came here to see my brother and have some fun while I'm at it," she chuckles. That fucking snake, she has no idea what she's done. Vince hasn't seen Enya in five days. He's been rampaging and almost managed to break the silver chains. This is not going to end well.
"He's not your brother; you're delusional. But that's alright; I'll be happy to see what happens to you next. Just wait until Vince hears what happened here." My voice is full of amusement. It's been hard to keep my emotions in check, especially in the last week or so, and I needed something to look forward to. Allison happens to be offering me just that- I'd love to see the look on her face once Vince hears about this.
Allison blows on her nails and rolls her eyes. "Yeah, like he'd listen to you. Who would he trust more- his sister or backstabbing best friend? Besides, after that runt tells him what happened, Vince will be sure it's your fault." I wonder how she managed to survive for so many years while the woman has no survival instinct. She was treated like a queen because of daddy's money, while she doesn't understand how dangerous it is to mess with the wrong people.
"Because we don't have hidden cameras around the packhouse, right? No wonder he calls you a moron." I point to the upper corners of the kitchen to remind Allison of the gadgets that are all over the packhouse.
Her eyes widen for a second, but in a flash, she's regained her carefree attitude. "Vincent wouldn't do anything; we're a family," Allison announces, and I immediately shake my head. She doesn't know Vince as well as I do.
"Enya is his mate. Not only did he have to wait for more than thirty years for her to show up, but they also had enough obstacles to get to the step they have now. Besides, why don't you think about it for yourself- she was just in the heat for five days, and Vince chained himself in the cells so he wouldn't hurt her. I'm pretty sure only someone madly in love would do something like that. Honestly, he thinks of me as his brother. We have been family for years- just him and me, but I know Vince would snap my neck if I did anything to Enya. Oh, you'll have a good time." I made my point clear, so this is about the time when I leave the whiny, overgrown toddler behind and let her think about what she's done. In the meantime, I can find Enya and apologise for what I said. If she agrees, I'll take her to the camera room and show her proof that it's Allison's fault and not something I meant to say. Bitch made me act like a fucking asshole.
Before I can take a step forward, Allison quickly raises her voice. "My father would declare war if he did anything!"
I wonder if her words sound as ridiculous to her as they do to me. This is the worst attempt at someone saving their skin I've witnessed. "And Vince would care about that? Are you that stupid, Allison? Your father couldn't announce the fact that he's taking a shit as he's not a true Alpha. If someone like Vincent Romano announced war to his side- the majority of packs would give up without even trying to defend themselves. And yet, here you are, talking about a pack led by an Omega, and all the members of your pack would rather live under Vincent's rule. Can you put two and two together?" I turn around and cross my arms in front of my chest. But the look on her face changes before she gets to open her mouth. I watch the colour disappear from Allison's face and raise an eyebrow. What in the world?
I don't need to question her because an all too familiar voice full of anger rings out from behind me. "What the fuck did she do?"
