Chapter 234 THE ALPHA’S BURDEN
Percival
I glanced back and forth between Doc and Daisy, a newfound sense of determination settling into my bones. I understood that this journey would be challenging, but I was ready to face it. “When does he arrive? When do we begin?” I asked, my voice steady with resolve.
Daisy’s lips curled into a sly smile. “He will arrive tonight,” she said. “You will start your training tomorrow. But until then, it is my responsibility to help heal your soul and soothe your emotions. Drink the tea, Percival. Drink it, and let your emotions surface.”
I looked down at the cup in my hands. The tea was still very hot, the warmth radiating through the ceramic and into my palms. I hoped that this tea would offer some comfort, making it easier for me to open up and share my deepest fears.
Before my wolf had a chance to take control, I lifted the cup to my lips and took a careful sip.

William
It felt as though time was speeding up, the day slipping away faster than usual. Dark, heavy clouds loomed over the pack lands, a stark reminder of the gravity of the situation. The sun remained hidden, casting a somber shadow over everything.
Today was the day of the meeting.
With Percival on the mend, Doc, Annabel, and the other doctors had been working tirelessly to strengthen him so that he could regain control over his wolf. His wolf had been causing chaos all week, attacking anyone who crossed his path. It was crucial for everyone involved, including me, to address the situation. Mirabelle had been relentless, insisting on holding the meeting and demanding that I be transparent with the pack. She had even requested Alpha Reynolds's presence, so he could hear firsthand what had happened to his daughter.
My pack, the one I led, had been taken from me by those within it.
As the leader, I should have been in control. I cared deeply for my family and refused to hide anything from them. Even with my son Darius—despite his mistakes and the awful things he had done—I loved him deeply. My wolf loved and cared for him too.
Last week, we held a memorial in the Meadow, our pack’s cemetery, to honor Darius. Everyone had attended except for Jack, Dahlia, and Nixx, which troubled me. Nixx, being Darius’s brother, should have been there. I wished I could have done more to help Darius. I had tried everything, things that no one else knew. But I was aware that he was gone. He had misunderstood things completely.
I had made mistakes in how I handled everything.
Standing in the backyard of the packhouse, the cool fall air stung my face. I couldn’t shake the anxiety about what lay ahead. Once the pack lost respect for me, life would become increasingly difficult. The discovery that Nixx was my son could stir even more discord. I had not been unfaithful to my partner, so I was unsure why this situation had escalated so dramatically. Yet, the damage was inevitable.
The pain of Darius’s death weighed heavily on me. Percival’s anger at me for endangering his partner, Nixx’s hatred, Jack’s loss of respect, and Dahlia’s hurtful stares were constant reminders of my failures. I felt I had let down my friends, my family. My partner could no longer bear to be near me. The punishment I had imposed on her for striking out had driven her further away. Now, knowing that Darius had killed his own partner and kept it secret, I realized I had failed to listen to her. Our conversation was supposed to be about Percival and his recovery, nothing more.
I pushed down my emotions, feeling my wolf stir in the back of my mind, a reminder that I was still in charge. As I approached the packhouse, I saw the entire pack gathered in the backyard. Wolves of all ages, from the edge of the house to the water’s edge, had assembled. A platform was set up for my speech.
Suddenly, Annabel stepped in front of me, her stance commanding and her expression fierce. Her wolf’s intensity mirrored her gaze as she locked eyes with me. “Don’t do this,” she said, her voice filled with urgency. “You don’t owe them anything. I have thought it over, and I believe you were right to do what you did. Our son’s memory is about to be tarnished. You are the Alpha; you have the power to make them keep quiet. William, don’t go through with this. I’m not ready to step down. Please, if you love me...” Her eyes pleaded with me, and her hands gripped my shirt.
I didn't like how Annabel seemed to focus solely on power and control, rather than the real issue at hand—her son’s legacy. I pushed her hands away from my shirt and walked resolutely toward the stage.
As I ascended the steps, I felt the weight of a hundred pairs of eyes on me. Shock, anger, and frustration radiated from the crowd. Some members were clearly upset with me, believing I was failing in my duty by not punishing Percival for his actions. Others were angered by Edeline’s departure, revealing how much she had been valued and missed.
At the stage, Alpha Reynolds and his beta stood with Mirabelle, waiting. Mirabelle's impatience was palpable. Alpha Reynolds, an older wolf with an air of authority, wore a puzzled expression. He didn’t seem to understand why he had been summoned.
Nixx was positioned on the opposite side of the stage from me. When our eyes met, his gaze flickered away quickly, filled with a mix of emotion I couldn’t quite place.
I climbed the steps slowly, my palms sweating as I gripped the railing. My wolf stirred restlessly, sensing the anger of the gathered pack. I let him take a brief look around, preparing myself for their hostile stares. Many quickly averted their eyes, reluctant to challenge me directly.
I took a deep breath and faced the crowd. I could feel the intensity of Alpha Reynolds’s gaze and the collective pain from the pack.
“I have called this meeting to address some pressing pack issues,” I began, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me.
A man’s voice cut through the murmur. “Percival! Where is he? Why isn’t he being tried for Darius’s murder?”
