Chapter 28
Chapter 28
“Huh! The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, does it?” Sarah mocked. “I suggest you go and bring Emily out here. I have no time to waste on a disrespectful servant like you!”
Evelyn frowned, regarding Sarah with hatred.
“Are you deaf? I already told you the Callum family has nothing to do with Miss Charles anymore. Leave now, or I’ll order the security to throw you out!”
“You damn bitch!” Sarah immediately erupted in anger and reached out to grab Evelyn’s face. However, she was too bulky and her hand got stuck on the gate. Struggling only made her stuck more.
“Susan! Quick! Help me!” Sarah shouted, her tone shifting from confrontational to desperate, calling for her daughter’s assistance.
Susan snapped to attention, grasping her mother’s arm. “Mum, just hold on, it will be over quickly.”
As she finished speaking, she yanked forcefully. “Ah!” was the piercing scream that followed from Sarah’s mouth.
Susan believed Sarah’s arm was free, but when she realized it was still stuck, her eyes widened, a hint of disgust flashing in them. Still, she kept a gentle and concerned expression. “Mum, you are too big, it won’t come off.”
Pain twisted Sarah’s face, and Susan’s comment about her size only upset her, yet she was unable to scold her daughter and turned to Evelyn, who stood by watching. “Go get Emily out here now! If I get hurt, my son won’t let her off! And you! What the hell are you staring at!”
Evelyn gave a cold laugh, stepping back. She knew Sarah was looking for a confrontation.
“Serve you right! Why don’t you stay stuck, you damn fat old witch! And why should Miss Charles come out? She’s not a doctor. Even your own daughter can’t help you, and you expect Miss Charles to? Keep dreaming!”
Sarah, infuriated, had not expected even a maid like Evelyn to stand up to her so boldly. Her rage was close to boiling over.
“You bitch! Open the gate if you have the guts, and see if I won’t take you down myself!”
“Hey! Mind your language!” Susan interjected, clearly upset. “Regardless, my mother is still Emily’s mother-in-law. How dare you treat her this way? Do you want me to call Victor to handle this?”
Susan was only bluffing and had no intention to call Victor since she and Sarah hadn’t even told him about their visit.
And regarding Sarah’s arm being stuck… What did that have to do with Susan?
It wasn’t Susan’s arm that got stuck, nor was she the one feeling the pain.
She was sure Emily would come out after hearing such a commotion.
“What is all this noise about?” came Emily’s displeased voice from behind.
Evelyn turned to see Emily and stepped aside, her face full of regret. “I’m sorry, Miss Charles. Did we interrupt your rest? I should have handled this better.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Emily said, walking forward briskly, her tone calm and reassuring. “It’s not your fault. It’s hard to find peace with a dog barking endlessly outside, isn’t it?”
On hearing this, Sarah, who had been confidently waiting for Emily to appear and help her, was stunned and enraged when she realised Emily was referring to her. “Emily! You bitch! Who are you calling a dog?”
Emily looked at Sarah without surprise, a hint of amusement in her eyes and a small smirk on her red lips. “Why take it so personally? Only a dog would respond.”
Sarah’s face went a deep red. She shouted at Emily, “I’ll have Victor sort you out! You will pay for this, you bitch!”
Emily watched Sarah with a cold, mocking smile. “Sorry, but you won’t get that chance.”
She threw a document at Sarah’s face. “Here, take this back and have your son sign it.”
Susan, with sharp eyes, noticed the large letters on the document cover. She gasped and quickly grabbed it. As she read the words, she could hardly contain her joy. “Mom, look! It’s a divorce agreement! Emily really wants to divorce Victor. That maid wasn’t making it up!”
Susan quickly handed the document to Sarah. At first taken aback, Sarah snapped, “What are you talking about? It’s not Emily who wants to divorce Victor. He is the one who wants a divorce.”
“Yes! Let’s rush back and give Victor the good news, Mum!” Susan cried, overjoyed. She alone knew how eagerly she had awaited this moment. When events turned in her favour, she remembered suggesting Victor divorce Emily and marry her instead. Every time she had mentioned it, Victor pretended not to understand and changed the subject.
Susan had to protect her image, so she never pressed him for answers. She knew Emily, unlike herself, had been born into the Charles family and was their cherished biological daughter.
Susan figured that Victor, having recently strengthened his position in the Callum Group, was cautious about Emily’s prominent status and feared public backlash, which explained his reluctance to mention divorce.
Regaining her composure, Sarah looked at Emily with a complex expression. “You… why have you suddenly decided to let go of my son? Are you having an affair with another man?”
Emily’s sudden change of tone startled Sarah. She eyed her intently, unable to hide mixed feelings. In Sarah’s view, Victor was irresistible. Although she scorned Emily for seeming desperate to be with Victor, she still felt a sense of pride.
After all, before marrying Victor, Emily had been the most desired socialite in Lunavri. That such a woman would be devoted to Victor was a point of pride.
But Sarah had never imagined Emily would one day seek a divorce from Victor.
What an ungrateful bitch!
Her voice trembled with fury, and a few onlookers nearby fell silent for a moment. The air felt tense and heavy.
Emily’s brows furrowed slightly, clearly taken aback by Sarah’s accusation. She replied coldly, “Do you really think your son Victor is that charming? I’m done with him and want him out. Is that not allowed?”
“Shut up! How dare you speak ill of my son, Emily. You can go to hell!”
