Chapter 21
Chapter 21
Then it hit her and she frowned slightly and her once calm voice suddenly turned into a serious tone, “ Mr Waylen, such jokes aren't funny at all, please refrain from making them in the future”
Nathaniel felt a sharp pain in his heart. He was ready to argue with her that he wasn’t joking and meant every single word he said, but before he could say anything, Emily coldly added, “I'm not divorced yet, and even if I were, I wouldn't consider remarrying soon. I hope we can remain purely as business partners”
Her aim is to boost all that she had lost in the year of getting married to Victor, not jumping into another loveless marriage.
Nathaniel felt as though he had been drenched in cold water; he couldn't believe the words he was hearing, but nevertheless, he would wait, and still get her, if he could, for some years; there is no crime waiting for some time more. He just frowned and remained silent, observing Emily for a moment. Seeing her stern face, he understood that persisting with the conversation would only upset her more and decided to hold back his words.
He didn't want her to think less of him.
“I apologize, I overstepped my path.” Nathaniel apologized with a slight bow, returning to his usual lighthearted manner. He smiled as easily as if he were only teasing her in the first place.
Seeing his teasing smile, Emily let out a quiet sigh of relief. At least she realised that Nathaniel had only been teasing her.
Fortunately, she hasn't taken his words to heart. If she had been less experienced, she might have easily fallen for Nathaniel's charm.
Watching Emily's response, a shadow passed Nathaniel's eyes, his heart was sinking!
It seemed that Emily had truly forgotten him, forgotten everything that they had done in the past together.
And she wasn't prepared to give him a chance, a wave of frustration washed over Nathaniel. How come that bastard Victor was allowed to marry her, yet he couldn't?
Suddenly, the sound of quick footsteps came from outside, and soon the door swung open, and Evelyn walked in with a tall, young, handsome man behind her, “Miss Charles, the doctor is here!” Evelyn called immediately as she entered
Emily turned her attention to the young handsome Man following behind Evelyn and noticed the medical kit case in his hand, and his face didn't look familiar. She hadn't seen him before. She turned curiously at Nathaniel, who appeared somehow calm. “Mr Waylen, who is this?”
There was a trace of irritation in Nathaniel's eyes, and he glanced between Emily and the young handsome Man avoiding eye contact,
“This is my personal doctor, Fred Michelle. Feed please take care of Miss Charles”
Fred gave Nathaniel a puzzled look and responded, “Of course, Mr Waylen,” he said with a slight bow and jumped into action.
He set the medical kit down beside the bed and as he opened it, Emily couldn't resist peeking inside, it was completely full, after a quick examination of her, he announced “Miss Charles, does indeed have a health issue”
In his words, a tense atmosphere enveloped the room. There was silence as everyone seemed too speechless to utter a word, but how could it be?
Emily's eyes dulled a little, but she wasn't entirely surprised to hear the report. Beneath the blanket, her hand twisted into a ball as she cursed the bastard of a man she had married just a few months ago.
“That bastard!” She screamed inwardly.
So it has come to this… had Victor already taken action against her? They haven't been married a full year, yet he couldn't wait to get rid of her! Victor…is truly cruel!
She instinctively wished the kicks she had delivered to him in the Waylen family parking lot the previous night had been more severe than that. She would have made sure to paralyze him completely in his manhood, that he would barely recover from it, if only she had known.
“How…how could this be?” Evelyn's voice rang out in panic. “Miss Charles has always been healthy. She has rarely been sick since she was a child! Dr Fred, it is impossible! there must be a mistake in your diagnosis?” Evelyn was the first to speak, she couldn't believe the fact that her mistress is sick, not when her meals were cooked in a full complete balanced diet and healthy fruits. Shock was written all over her face as stared at Fred voicing out all her doubts.
Caught off by the question, Fred brow knitted , being a doctor for over 5 years he couldn't help but felt slightly annoyed by the challenge but before he could reply, a low stern voice filled the room, “his diagnosis is correct”
“But…” Evelyn paused, turning to look at Nathaniel.
“There is no buts” Nathaniel said dismissively, shutting up every defence word that was about to come out of Evelyn's mouth.
His handsome face was serious as he stood tall, Taking a step forward in a deep voice he asked, “So what exactly is Miss Charles suffering from?”
Fred Tucked away his handkerchief, his eyes scanning the three people in the room before it solely settle on Emily stoic face, then he noticed it, she didn't looked frighten about the diagnosis report, he arched his brow as curiosity got the best of him, “ Miss Charles, you didn't seem surprised do you already know you were…”
“I know my body well” She said cutting him off before he could finish his statement, while giving a faint smile, “ it's just a cold and fever, doc Fred so there is no need for alarm”
Fred eyes narrowed slightly, he was about about explained, “this isn't just a simple fever”
“Evelyn!” Emily interjected her voice was soft when she turned to Evelyn “ Isn't there soup on the cooker in the kitchen?I think I smell something burning”
Evelyn paused and sniffed the air, “I don't smell anything burning Miss Charles, are you sure?”
“I'm fine, please go check the kitchen. It's just a cold from the rain. Why is everyone making a fuss? I'm really fine”
Hearing Emily's words, Evelyn hesitated for a moment perhaps it was Emily earnest expression that persuaded her not to worry too much.
“ go ahead with the check up then, I'll go make breakfast”
“Alright”
Emily kept up her gentle smile until Evelyn had left the room. As the sound of Evelyn footsteps faded away down the hallway, Emily let out a reliving breath and was about to speak to Nathaniel when he gave her a cold look.
“Miss Charles, if you're trying to dismiss me, save your effort!”
