Chapter 20
Chapter 20
He kept on with his blabbering, unbothered by the painful expression her face was making, instead of he to let her go, he pressed on
“If I don't care about you, would I have entrusted you with such an important project and the leading capital? Is it my fault your parents died? Is it the company's fault? Now the project has failed and instead of you holding on to your mistakes, you're wishing evil for my parents. Because your parents are dead you want the same for my parents too? Emily, I never thought you could be this cruel and heartless!”
Victor's angry words had been reverberating in her ears. Just thinking about it now drained the color from her face, like she was reliving that nightmare.
“Emily!” Suddenly, a man's voice cut through her thoughts, snapping her back to reality. Her vision was shortly blurring before it became clearer.
She found herself lifted up in the air and strong, firm hands wrapped against her skin in a comforting way; she was no longer in the swing again.
Her gaze went up and met the serious striking face of Nathaniel.
How did she end up in his hands!!
“You…put me down!” She screamed, terrified as how she left the swing and now she was sitting in his hands.
“Don't move” Nathaniel's voice was calm and unusually concerned. He walked towards the villa, gazing down at her with a serious expression. “ You don't seem well and fainted in the swing. I've called the doctor, and he will be here soon. In the meantime, don't worry, you'll be okay,” he reassured her.
Emily was speechless. She was still confused about how she had fainted on the swing when, a while ago, she was perfect. She stared at the face of the man carrying her; his expression was gravely serious.
She had barely known Nathaniel, and this was the first time she was seeing him this serious and intense which made her wonder…
After she composed herself, she realised that Nathaniel had gently placed her on a large soft bed. He covered her with a thick blanket and adjusted a pillow behind her head for extra comfort
Feeling his thoughtful and detailed care, Emily felt unsure about how to respond. Having spent so much time watching over the troublesome victor, she called her husband, she found it strange to be cared for by someone she hardly knew.
Nathaniel quickly noticed Emily's discomfort and fear. He pressed his lips tightly together, finding it hard to know what to say, but with his eyes glancing at her with mixed emotions, he took it upon himself to push out words, “I've called the family doctor, he should be here soon”
Emily looked up at Nathaniel, his expression was still serious from earlier, feeling a tangled emotion, she forced herself, “Did you call … the Callum family doctor?” she asked,
“Why Should I?” He snapped, his tone dripping with sarcasm, but when he caught Emily's eyes staring at him strangely, he coughed and changed his amusing face back to his earlier serious expression.
“With Victor's behavior toward you, do you think he will send his family doctor to look after you?”
His Sarcasm was aimed not at Emily but at Victor. Nathaniel thought Victor was a complete jerk for treating his own wife like trash. He had never expected Victor would treat her this way as he himself had done a long ago when they were still kids, but Emily never remembered his face.
Thinking about it, Nathaniel's eyes quickly flashed with anger, and his hands subconsciously clenched on their own. He felt like giving that man the pain of his life by punching him hard on the chin!
If he had known things would end up this way, he would have heeded the advice he had received back then and cut Victor completely out of their lives!
It would have prevented Emily's current suffering.
“That's true…” Emily replied, her eyes downcast and a wry smile playing on her lips. She hasn't suspended Nathaniel's strange behavior because if she had, she might have discovered the truth earlier.
“The thing you said earlier in the garden,” Nathaniel said, as he regained his composure and looked intently at her. Noting that her complexion looked better, he added, “I don’t agree with them. Well, you say only after the wedding that you know the only people who care about you are your parents”
Emily paused, trying to recall the words as she turned her gaze in the direction of Nathaniel, who was now leaning against the doorframe with One Hand in his pockets as he stared earnestly at her. “You feel that way because you married the wrong person. If your marriage was happy and fulfilling if you had married a loving, reliable, and responsible man, things would have been naturally different”
His words took her by surprise, and she had to consider that he was right.
Nathaniel made a clear point that she couldn’t deny; if she had been married to a better man, her previous life wouldn't have been so tragic!
However, the truth was she hadn't married such a man and her marriage was Fated To fail.
“You're right, but where in this world can you find such a good-hearted man as you describe?”
With what had happened to her with Victor, she has used that same aspect with other men. There was no shame or doubt that the men in higher society in the country didn't have concubines. Just that in Victor's case, his Own was a strange woman outside but his own adoptive sister, such a shame…
“Who said you can't?” Nathaniel's voice rose above his usual calm tone as he tried so desperately to prove his own point, “Am I not one?”
Instantly, Emily found herself speechless. It was as if the wind in the room stopped, and everything became motionless just to grab his words. She was too stunned to even form a word and stared at the man with wide eyes.
She didn't know what exact words to say to him; it wasn't that he was hot and good-looking enough to be her husband, not that, not Nathaniel Waylen; he is the hottest bachelor in the country that any woman would kill themselves just to hear him say these words to them. But she was reconsidering; this was never on her revenge list.
So, she just replied to him with a warm smile and refused to say anything. To Nathaniel, that silence was already a no to his proposal, and he frowned, becoming visibly upset, he said, “You don't think I am?”
Emily found his reaction both amusing and confusing; she didn't understand why Nathaniel was making such a big deal out of this, especially since she hadn't expressed her opinion on his proposal.
Noticing Nathaniel was deeply concerned about this, she decided to speak up and not keep quiet as she had planned to be. With a deep sigh, she opened up, “Firstly, Mr Waylen, we have only met twice and barely know each other. So I can't say if you are a good man. And secondly, even if you are, it doesn't concern me. After all, you are not planning to marry me. So I don't have a say, right?”
Her words held a mix of humor and sincerity and attempted to lighten up the uncomfortable mood. All she thought was that Nathaniel pitied her and was trying to build up her mood.
But Nathaniel wasn't ready to back down that easily. Unexpectedly, he gazed at her deeply and said softly, “If you are willing, it wouldn't be impossible.” Emily wasn't sure that he would indeed be happy to marry her after Victor's displays and not when she hadn't gotten the divorce done yet.
Emily's eyes widened in surprise as she fully picked up on the words. It seemed Nathaniel indeed wanted to marry her!
She stuttered, “You…?”
