Chapter 273 Selective Amnesia
Soon, the car drove into Netherworld Mountain.
The Powell family's castle was built on Netherworld Mountain. The entire castle was almost one with Netherworld Mountain. After about ten minutes of winding mountain roads, the car stopped in front of the castle's grand and imposing gates.
Several rows of neatly arranged Powell family guards stood in front of the castle, each with a serious expression, as if they would immediately take action at the slightest disturbance.
Under Efren's guidance, Lester arrived at one of the magnificent main halls.
Gwyneth sat in the main seat with her eyes closed, resting. People said Gwyneth looked young, and when Lester saw her, he was momentarily stunned. The Gwyneth before him looked like a young woman in her twenties no matter how you looked at her, with a beautiful appearance that completely didn't match her actual age.
Just sitting there, she radiated a queenly presence that was impossible to ignore.
Efren stepped forward and said, "Sister, I've brought Dr. Harrison."
Hearing the movement, Gwyneth on the main seat lowered her hand from her forehead and slowly opened her eyes.
Gwyneth had a beautiful and alluring face, but it wasn't just beautiful—her features were sharp and defined. Her gaze looked lazy and casual, but the moment Lester met her eyes, a wave of pressure came straight at him.
Lester quickly lowered his head.
Gwyneth frowned and looked at Efren, a bit impatient. "Didn't I already say it can't be cured? Why are you still bringing doctors here?"
"Sister, let's try one more time," Efren said gently. "Dr. Harrison specializes in treating hypnotists. He's quite different from all those previous doctors."
Gwyneth didn't respond, only asking him, "Where did you run off to fool around this afternoon?"
"I..." Efren scratched his head. "I just..."
After thinking for a long time, he suddenly remembered the girl who had placed bets for him at the arena, and said, "Sister, I saw a girl today who looks a lot like you!"
"Like me?" Gwyneth looked at him skeptically. "How does she look like me?"
"The eyes are most similar, and also the nose, mouth, and face shape! She's like a miniature version of you!"
Gwyneth sneered, "Then you should have brought her here for me to see."
"If I see her again next time, I'll definitely bring her to show you!" Efren said with a grin. "Sister, I'm serious. If you two stood together, Grandma would definitely think you secretly had a daughter behind her back!"
Gwyneth found this amusing. "I'm so young, how could I possibly have a daughter?"
Efren muttered quietly, "You're not that young either, you're already over forty..."
"Shut up." Gwyneth glared at him. "I'm twenty-seven years old this year."
"Then how old am I?" Efren pointed at his twenty-seven-year-old self.
"You're seventeen," Gwyneth said.
Efren: "..."
"Fine, seventeen it is."
"Sister, can I have Dr. Harrison examine you? Maybe he can really find the root of your problem."
Gwyneth didn't refuse again. She glanced at Lester coolly. "Come here."
After Lester examined Gwyneth, he frowned.
Efren quickly asked, "What's wrong?"
Lester looked at Gwyneth. "May I ask, Ms. Powell, have you lost your memory?"
Efren was stunned by this.
Hearing Lester's words, a dark gleam flashed in Gwyneth's eyes. She narrowed her eyes and studied Lester, speaking coolly, "How do you know?"
"Ms. Powell, I not only know you've lost your memory, I also know your memory loss was caused by hypnotic backlash. It's a type of selective amnesia."
"And this is also the cause of your headaches."
Gwyneth's expression became completely serious. "What exactly is going on? I do have some things I can't remember, no matter how hard I try."
Four years ago, she woke up to find a group of people surrounding her bed. Her mother tearfully asked where she had been all these years, and her grandmother hugged her, crying that she had finally come home.
After asking around, she learned that she had run away from home for over twenty years and had only just returned.
But regarding what happened during those twenty-plus years, she had absolutely no memory at all.
She didn't even feel like she had ever run away from home. Why would she run away? Where did she go?
No matter how hard she tried to remember, she couldn't. The more she tried, the worse her headaches became.
Lester explained, "Ms. Powell, your symptoms aren't rare. Many hypnotists, when performing hypnosis, are prone to experiencing backlash."
"Memory loss is one form of backlash, and headaches are just one of its manifestations."
Gwyneth of course knew that when a hypnotist forcibly hypnotizes another hypnotist with stronger mental power, they could very likely suffer backlash due to the other person's resistance.
She just had never thought in that direction before.
If it really was due to backlash, then who was she hypnotizing when she suffered the backlash? And it made her forget so many years of memories all at once.
Gwyneth had no clue.
Efren looked at Lester. "Dr. Harrison, can my sister's condition be cured? Can she remember the things she's forgotten?"
Lester didn't say yes or no, only saying, "We can try."
With that, he took out a prescription and gave it to Efren. "First take this medicine for a week, and I'll come check on her again after a week."
Efren took the prescription. "Thank you."
Lester nodded to Gwyneth and Efren. "I'll be going now."
Efren had someone escort Lester out. Only after Lester disappeared from view did he turn to Gwyneth and say, "Sister, if he could diagnose that you lost your memory, it means he's not ordinary. Maybe this prescription will really work."
Gwyneth nodded. "Let's try following this prescription first."
"By the way, sister, when I went to the hospital to find Dr. Harrison today, I saw Bodhi."
"Bodhi? What about him?"
"Damon was seriously injured by someone." Efren thought for a moment and said, "I'm guessing the Whitley family will make a big move today."
Hearing this, Gwyneth pressed her forehead. "Given the Whitley family's vengeful nature, if Damon was injured, Bodhi will definitely make whoever hurt Damon pay the price."
She couldn't help but ask, "Who injured Damon?"
"Not sure."
Just as Efren finished speaking, an elderly voice suddenly came from the doorway. "I heard you talking about the Whitley family? The Whitley family has been acting way too arrogant lately!"
Efren looked over. "Wilder? What's wrong?"
Wilder said angrily, "This afternoon I went to check out the auction house, and that Damon was so arrogant and domineering, he's no different from a bandit..."
Wilder recounted what happened at the auction house.
Hearing this, Gwyneth's eyes darkened. She gave orders, "Efren, have Knox take people to watch Bodhi. If he still dares to act so arrogantly, have Knox bring him directly to me. I'll have a talk with him."
"Yes."
