Chapter 68 You Don't Believe Me
Henry disagreed, "What are you talking about? Sure, I give John some money regularly, but that million dollars was saved up by John bit by bit. Besides, once I gave it to him, how he spends it is his freedom."
"Freedom indeed - dropping a million dollars just like that. I've never been spoiled like that."
I really hadn't gotten that kind of treatment, but whenever my favorite brands released something new, Maria would have the brand representatives bring clothes directly to our house for me to choose from. I never had the chance to go to the mall and shop freely.
Seeing how jealous I sounded, Henry quickly tried to please me, "You want money? I'll give you some too."
He took out his phone and transferred money to me. Soon, my bank account also had an extra million dollars.
"Here, buy whatever you like. My daughter can't be outdone by others."
Seeing this, Maria finally showed a bit of a smile.
Not long after we got back, John's driver came to the house.
Hearing the doorbell, Peter led Serenity inside.
"Uncle Henry, Aunt Maria, hello."
The moment Maria saw Serenity, her expression was somewhat complicated, since all the recent turmoil in the Lockwood family had been caused by her.
"Aunt Maria, I'm here to pick up Helena to go shopping at the mall."
The gauze on her forehead had been removed, leaving only a light-colored bandage. You couldn't really tell unless you looked closely.
Hearing Serenity's words, the usually gentle Maria couldn't blame Serenity for everything that had happened, so she just nodded, "Okay, you two be careful. Helena, come home early."
"Okay, bye, Mom."
Hearing my words, Maria waved goodbye to me.
In the car, Serenity asked timidly, "Helena, where are we going?"
I took out my phone, "No rush. We're probably going to buy a lot today, and one driver won't be enough to carry everything. I'll call someone else."
She asked in surprise, "Who are you calling?"
"Knox, of course."
I started making the call.
When Knox heard I wanted him to go shopping with me, he agreed right away without thinking.
When we met up, he saw Serenity beside me, and his brow furrowed slightly, almost imperceptibly.
The moment Serenity saw Knox, her eyes lit up. She stepped forward and greeted him, "Mr. Pemberton, hello. Thanks for coming shopping with us today."
Knox remained expressionless, looking at her coldly, "Accompanying my fiancée shopping is what I should do. Serenity, don't read too much into it."
That one sentence left Serenity stunned. Then she quietly stepped back, following behind us as we walked toward the mall.
Knox stepped forward to carry my purse attentively, whispering in my ear, "Helena, when the two of us go shopping, why would you bring an extra person?"
I smiled, glanced back at Serenity, and deliberately raised my voice, "Uncle John told me to take Serenity shopping and help her get more clothes and jewelry. Knox, just come shopping with us. Otherwise, the two of us will get tired carrying so many things."
Seeing me act cute for once, Knox quickly said, "Okay, okay, I'll come along. Whatever you want to buy, put it on my account."
"Great, thanks, Knox."
I deliberately put on a loving display for Serenity to see.
She must be incredibly jealous right now.
I didn't dare provoke Serenity any further. We'd just arrived at the mall, so I walked into a store I frequented. The sales staff surrounded me the moment they saw me.
"Ms. Lockwood, hello."
"Ms. Lockwood, you haven't been here in so long. We have lots of new items. Would you like to see them?"
I shook my head and pointed at Serenity behind me, "I'm here today to help my cousin look at clothes. Find everything that would suit her and show them to her."
"Yes, Ms. Lockwood, this way please."
The staff led me attentively to the lounge area, then went over to Serenity.
Serenity was instantly surrounded by a group of staff members. She seemed a bit overwhelmed at first.
But she quickly composed herself and pointed at a row of clothes, "I don't like dark colors. Remove the dark ones, and take away anything too flashy, too."
"Certainly."
The staff quickly removed what she didn't like, leaving several racks of clothes, then looked at Serenity, "Would you like us to find a model to try them on for you?"
At this, Serenity looked surprised, "There are fitting models?"
The staff nodded, "Yes, we'll try to find someone with a similar build to yours to try them on for you."
"No need, I'll try these clothes on myself."
As soon as Serenity finished speaking, the staff stopped insisting and pushed the clothes she'd selected near the fitting room.
"Please go ahead."
Serenity walked straight into the fitting room without hesitation and started trying things on.
Knox and I sat bored in the lounge area, sipping coffee.
Seeing me sitting there, Knox couldn't help asking, "Helena, aren't you going to pick out anything?"
I shook my head, "I said I'd come shopping with Serenity today. How could I steal her spotlight?"
"Do you really care that much about Serenity?" Knox asked tentatively.
I smiled and shook my head, "What do you mean by care? After all, we're both part of the Lockwood family. Besides, as Uncle John said, she's new here, so it's only right that I accompany her."
"Helena, I've noticed you're really good to your cousins."
I smiled and shook my head, "That's only because I don't have any other siblings. But I never expected Natasha to have such hostility toward me."
I sighed and touched my arm where I was injured, looking sad, "Natasha really broke my heart."
Seeing me like this, Knox quickly comforted me, "Helena, don't be sad. I'm sure she didn't mean it."
I looked at Knox with sadness in my eyes, "Knox, even you're saying this. Are you choosing to believe Natasha over me?"
"How could that be?"
Knox quickly explained, "I just think that under those circumstances, she couldn't possibly have done such a thing."
"But isn't the injury on my body the best evidence? Besides, didn't Natasha admit it herself?"
