Chapter 32 Chapter 32
Amelia
“You did all of that without even telling me?” Adele asked, bursting into laughter as I finished telling her everything that had happened.
I rolled my eyes and sighed, even though a small smile played on my lips.
After Maxwell stormed out of the house in anger that morning, I didn’t waste any time. I called Kelvin immediately to get updates on what was happening at the office. I needed to know if my plan had worked.
Kelvin told me that Maxwell had driven himself to the office. According to him, Maxwell had instructed my secretary to send out a memo to all the board members who had resigned. The memo stated that there would be an urgent meeting scheduled before the weekend.
Hearing that had been enough to calm my nerves.
“I’m sorry,” I said to Adele softly, shrugging.
“But if I had told you beforehand, you might have talked me out of it. I really needed to do something,” I continued. “My parents are already on my neck, and I couldn’t just sit around and let everything fall apart.”
“Just remember what brought you into this marriage in the first place,” Adele said, her laughter fading. Her voice turned serious. “I may not fully support what you did, not because you are wrong, but because I don’t want you getting yourself into more trouble.
And trust me, Maxwell is going to retaliate. When he does, it won’t be funny.”
I nodded slowly. I wasn’t ignorant of that fact. I knew Maxwell well enough to understand that he wouldn’t take this lightly. He would be angry. He would feel humiliated and he would definitely look for a way to strike back.
But I was already preparing myself. When he goes low, I will go lower—until he finally gets tired and chooses peace. Until he decides to let me go.
“Whatever,” I said lightly, waving her off. “I will be fine.”
I changed the subject before she could say anything else. “I’m planning to visit my kids this weekend. I want to spend the entire weekend with them.”
Since I moved here, my children and I had only spoken through video calls but it wasn’t the same. I missed them terribly, I didn’t even know how I had survived this long without holding them, without hearing their laughter in person. They asked me all the time when I was coming to see them.
I planned to go this weekend whether Maxwell approved of it or not. Nothing was going to stop me from seeing my children.
“That’s actually nice,” Adele said with a small smile. “It’s been almost a month since you last saw them—” The sudden ringing of my phone cut her off. I glanced down at the screen, and my mood instantly shifted. Declan’s name flashed across it.
After we had finally agreed on how much I would be paying him, he suddenly decided it wasn’t enough. According to him, since I was living under his brother’s roof, anything I asked from Maxwell would be handed to me easily. In his mind, that meant I could afford to give him more money.
I knew exactly why he was calling again.More money. Even though I had already settled him just last week.
I stared at the screen as it continued ringing, then let it stop without answering. I wasn’t about to turn myself into his personal ATM. I was already going broke, and that was one of the main reasons I was pushing so hard to get Maxwell to restore my company. I needed stability.
“Is that Declan?” Adele asked when she noticed I had ignored the call. I nodded slowly. She scoffed, anger flashing across her face.
“What does that son of a bitch want again? I thought you settled him.”
“More money,” I said flatly. “Which I don’t have right now, at least not until next month. So I’m not picking up his call.”
I tossed my phone onto the couch beside me and leaned back, rubbing my temples.
“You can’t tell me Declan doesn’t have a dirty past,” Adele said angrily, throwing her hands up. “Why hasn’t our private investigator found anything on him yet? I want that beast locked up for good.”
Before I could respond, the sound of the front door opening reached us. Both of us froze.
Adele immediately straightened up on the couch. “Isn’t that your husband?” she whispered quickly. “Damn, I thought I’d be gone before he got back.”
I frowned slightly. Maxwell never came home this early, my heart skipped a beat. Is something wrong?
Just then, Maxwell walked into the living room. The moment he stepped inside, his eyes locked onto mine. I could see the anger flash across his face instantly. He had warned me before very clearly not to bring guests into his house. Especially not Adele, after she had openly insulted him the last time they crossed paths.
Adele, being Adele, didn’t help matters. “Well, look who we have here,” she said lightly, her tone teasing. “Welcome back, sir.”
I quickly tapped her arm and shot her a warning look, silently telling her to stop before things got worse. Maxwell ignored her and walked straight toward us. He stopped right in front of me, towering over where I sat. The room felt heavy as he cleared his throat.
“I have a biker race by five,” he said coldly. “And you’re coming with me.”
“Holy shit! Can I come too?” Adele shouted, practically bouncing in her seat. “I haven’t been to one ever since—” She trailed off abruptly when she realized the way both Maxwell and I were staring at her. Her voice dropped, sheepish. “I am sorry.”
“Why do I have to go to the biker race with you?” I asked, frowning, frustration creeping into my voice.
Maxwell didn’t even look back at me. His tone was sharp, final. “If you read the contract properly, you wouldn’t be asking such questions. Be ready by five.” With that, he turned on his heel and headed upstairs, his presence leaving a tense silence behind him.
Before the door fully closed, Adele shouted after him, “I’m coming with you guys, please!”
I whirled toward her, exasperated. “Girl, can you have shame for once?” I asked, throwing my hands up in disbelief.
She shook her head vigorously, making a sound of pure defiance. “Nope. Never,” she said with a cheeky grin. “I will stop being shameless when I have my hot, handsome, trillionaire CEO slash biker in front of me. Girl, I am dead serious, I’m coming with you.”
Then, as if to make it official, she sat upright, crossed her legs casually, and gave me a look that said very clearly that she wasn’t going anywhere.
