“What do you mean you don’t know?” my dad’s voice came sharp over the phone. “You told us the reason you moved in with him was because he promised to help. It’s been three weeks, Amelia, and we haven’t seen a single change or any sign of what he’s done.”
I closed my eyes and took a slow breath. “I’m working on it, Dad,” I said quietly. “I promise you, you will start seeing changes soon.” Even as the words left my mouth, my heart sank. I had no real hope at the moment, but I couldn’t bring myself to admit that.
There was a brief silence on the other end before he spoke again. “You need to find a solution,” he said firmly. “We can’t just sit back and watch everything we have built fall apart.”
“I understand,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Be careful,” he added, his tone softening slightly. “We will talk later.” The call ended, leaving me staring at my phone.
It has been three weeks since I moved in with Maxwell, yet we have not sat down even once to have a proper conversation. It feels as though he married me only to fill space in his house, like a piece of decoration that no one pays attention to. He hardly comes home, and on the rare occasions that he does, he is never alone. There is always a woman on his arm, laughing beside him, as though my presence means nothing at all.
It has also been three weeks since I last showed up at the company. He told me I was still on my honeymoon and said he would handle everything there. At first, I tried to trust him, believing he knew what he was doing. But I call Kelvin almost every day to ask how things are going, hoping to hear some good news. Each time, his response is the same, nothing has changed since I left. The situation remains bad, and to make things worse, some staff members have already started resigning.
Today, I woke up early, hoping I would finally catch him before he left for work. I waited, listening for his footsteps, rehearsing what I would say in my head. But the moment I reached him at the door, he dismissed me without a second glance, already halfway out and clearly uninterested. In that instant, I knew I no longer had much of a choice. If he wouldn’t talk to me at home, then I would show up at his office.
I dressed carefully, pulling on a short, fitted gown and strapping on my heels. I grabbed my purse and headed downstairs. When I told his driver to take me to his office, he hesitated, clearly unsure. I met his hesitation with a firm look and told him I would drive myself if he refused. That settled it.
As soon as I arrived at the company, I walked straight toward the reception desk, my heels clicking sharply against the floor. The red-haired receptionist looked up at me with a polite smile.
“How can I help you, ma’am?” she asked.
I gave her a polite smile. “I’m Mrs. Sinclair, and I’m here to see my husband, Maxwell,” I said.
Her eyes widened instantly, shock flashing across her face before she tried to compose herself. “I—I will call Mr. Sinclair to inform him of your arrival,” she said, fidgeting as she reached for the phone. I gently stopped her hand.
“There’s no need, darling,” I said with a calm smile. “He already knows I’m here.”
She nodded quickly, clearly flustered, and pointed toward the elevator that led to his floor. I thanked her and headed straight for it.
When the elevator doors opened, I stepped out onto his floor and walked down the hallway.
Before I could go any farther, his personal assistant spotted me and hurried toward me in long, purposeful strides.
“Good morning, ma’am,” he said respectfully.
“You are here to see Mr. Sinclair, but he’s currently in a meeting.”
I fixed him with a hard look. “I wish I could wait for the meeting to be over,” I said coldly, “but I can’t.” Without giving him the chance to respond, I walked past him and headed straight for Maxwell’s office.
I had just reached the door when his PA hurried ahead of me and blocked my path. “I’m sorry, ma’am,” he said quickly. “You can’t go in right now. Please wait, and once he’s done with his meeting, I will let you in.”
I had heard enough, I pushed him aside, ignoring his protests, and opened the door myself.
The moment I stepped into the office, Maxwell’s eyes widened in shock as soon as he saw me. I walked toward his desk, my heart pounding, and that was when I realized he wasn’t alone. Someone slowly rose from underneath the desk, confirming every ugly thought that had been building in my mind.
His PA rushed in after me, breathless and flustered. “I’m so sorry, sir,” he said quickly. “I told her you were in a meeting, but she insisted and pushed me out of her way.” He shot me a sharp look, clearly annoyed.
I rolled my eyes in response, my attention already fixed on Maxwell and the scene unfolding before me.
Camila turned sharply toward me, her eyes blazing. “How dare you think you can waltz in here any how you like?” she snapped. “What gave you that right, bitch?” Her voice dripped with venom.
I ignored her and looked straight at Maxwell, raising an eyebrow. Was he going to tell her, or did he expect me to do the honors and announce that we were now husband and wife? When he said nothing, I turned back to her, a slow smile forming on my lips.
“Unlike you,” I said calmly, “I have every right to waltz in here whenever I like. And nobody can stop me.”
She stepped closer, her face twisted with anger. “You are so shameless,” she spat. “Sleeping with two brothers at the same time. What a slut.” She let out a bitter laugh. “If you think for one minute that a one-night stand with my man means anything, you’d better think again. To him, you are nothing but a quick fuck.” She tossed her hair back confidently.
Behind her, I caught sight of Maxwell smiling, “Your man is the one who doesn’t know how to move on,” I said coolly. “Whatever happened between us meant nothing to me. I forgot about him a long time ago and moved on with my life.” My eyes flicked briefly to Maxwell, and I saw his expression harden. “Maybe if you had more exposure, you wouldn’t be standing here fighting over someone so average.” I said to Camilla.
With that, I pushed the chair in front of his desk back and sat down, crossing my legs calmly, as if I belonged there. “How dare—” Camila began, her voice rising, but Maxwell cut her off sharply.
“Enough,” he snapped. “Leave, Camila. I will call you later.” He gestured toward the door, his tone leaving no room for argument. His PA, who had been silently watching the entire exchange, straightened immediately.
Camila stared at him in disbelief. “Wait, you are sending me out of your office because of her?” she asked, her voice shaking with anger.
“Don’t make me repeat myself,” Maxwell said dismissively. “Leave now. I will call you later.”
The finality in his voice made it clear the conversation was over.
She grabbed her purse and walked toward me, stopping just close enough to lower her voice. “This is far from over,” she warned.
I smiled at her, slow and deliberate. “Move along, zombie,” I said mockingly.
Her jaw tightened. Without another word, she stormed out with the PA behind her, slamming the door so hard the walls seemed to shake.
The moment they were gone, Maxwell turned on me, fury written all over his face. “How dare you walk in here and cause a scene?” he snapped. “You couldn’t call me first? Or wait until I got home to say whatever nonsense you came here to say?”
I shook my head calmly, refusing to rise to his anger. “According to our marriage agreement,” I said evenly, “whatever belongs to you belongs to me too.” I met his eyes without flinching. “So no, I’m not sorry for interrupting whatever I walked in on. That’s clearly the only reason you are so upset.”
I adjusted myself in the chair and leaned forward slightly. “Now,” I added coolly, “let’s get to the real reason I am here.”
