Chapter 150 Chapter 150
Maxwell
“Where are we?” I asked as Rafe pulled the car to a stop in front of a modest apartment building.
“You will see,” he replied, switching off the engine. The four of us climbed out of the car.
Rafe turned to face me. “Stay here for a minute,” he said. “Adele can be unpredictable. I want us inside before you come over. Otherwise, she will probably slam the door in our faces the moment she sees you.”
Jaxon snorted. “I still don't know how you have survived dating that crazy woman.”
Rafe shot him a warning look. “Can we focus on why we're here?” he said impatiently. “And for once, can you keep your mouth shut before you ruin everything?” Jaxon rolled his eyes but didn't argue.
I looked from one of them to the other, growing even more confused.
“How is meeting your girlfriend supposed to help me recover my memories?” I asked. “Or whoever you keep talking about? If something is wrong with my memory, then I should be at the hospital seeing a neurologist, not standing outside someone's apartment.”
Before anyone could answer, the front door opened. Adele stepped out, the moment Rafe spotted her, he and the others instinctively stepped in front of me, blocking me from her view.
She frowned at the strange sight. “What are all of you doing here?” she asked, looking from one face to another. “Did somebody die?”
“We're actually here to see you,” Rafe said, his voice noticeably less confident than it had been all evening. “We... uh... need to talk about something.”
I couldn't help noticing the change in him. The same man who had been acting fearless just minutes ago suddenly sounded nervous. She folded her arms across her chest, clearly unconvinced.
“Who are you hiding?” she asked suspiciously.
Without waiting for an answer, she walked toward us. The others shifted to block her path, but she simply pushed past them.
Then she saw me, her eyes widened. “What on earth is he doing here?” she shouted.
Rafe sighed.“Can we come inside first?” he asked carefully. “Then we'll explain everything.”
He hesitated before asking the question that seemed to matter most. “Is Amelia home?”
“Yes, she is,” Adele replied, her expression immediately hardening. “But there is no way on earth I'm letting this monster into my house after everything he has put Amelia through.”
Her glare shifted to me.“What does he want now?” she demanded. “Hasn't he done enough? Is he here to finish the job?”
“Can we just go inside?” Rafe asked calmly.
She shook her head without hesitation. “No.”
Rafe let out a frustrated sigh. “Fine.” He rubbed the back of his neck before continuing. “Maxwell has lost his memory. It's like someone wiped parts of it away. He couldn't even remember who we were. We had to introduce ourselves all over again and show him old pictures before he believed we'd known each other.”
He glanced at me before looking back at Adele. “We don't think he remembers anyone from that part of his life. We thought seeing Amelia might trigger something and help him recover his memories.”
Adele stared at him for a long moment before letting out a sarcastic laugh. "So his memory conveniently picked what to erase?” She folded her arms. “He remembers his sneaky link, Camilla.” She counted on her fingers. “He remembers his parents, he remembers his children but somehow he doesn't remember Amelia?”
She scoffed. “I don't fucking believe that.” Her words left me even more confused.
Everyone kept referring to Camilla as my sneaky link. But that made no sense, I clearly remembered the day we met. It was at the beach, after I had tried to take my own life. She had told me herself that it was the first time we had ever met.
So why was everyone insisting otherwise?
I looked at Adele. “Please,” I said quietly. “I really need your help.”
She didn't respond.
“I can't remember most of my life. Almost everything from my past is gone.” I swallowed hard. “It's like someone erased pieces of my memory. Nothing makes sense anymore. Everywhere I go, people tell me things that completely contradict what I remember, I didn't realize how serious it was until tonight.”
The anger on Adele's face softened, if only slightly. She studied me in silence, as if trying to decide whether I was lying. Several long seconds passed.
“Fine,” she said reluctantly. “You can come in.”
We stepped into the apartment. Amelia was sitting comfortably on the couch with a bowl of popcorn resting on her lap, completely absorbed in the movie playing on the television.
The moment she looked up and saw me, her entire expression changed. She sprang to her feet.
“What are you doing here?” she shouted, glaring at me. “Have you come to finish what you started?” She turned to Adele, disbelief written all over her face. “Why would you let him into this house?”
Adele remained calm. “Because I think you need to hear him out.”
Amelia shook her head immediately. “I don't want to hear a single word he has to say.” Her voice trembled with anger. “Not until my children are returned to me.”
Rafe stepped forward before either of us could speak. “Amelia, we think someone tampered with Maxwell's memory.”
She frowned but didn't interrupt him.
“He can't remember you,” Rafe continued. “He couldn't even remember us. We had to introduce ourselves all over again and show him old pictures before he believed we were his friends. As far as we can tell, he remembers almost nothing that happened before the last two years.”
Amelia crossed her arms. “Interesting,” she said bitterly. “So he conveniently forgot me.” Her eyes locked onto mine. “But he remembered Camilla well enough to get engaged to her and get her pregnant.”
“The baby isn't mine.” The words left my mouth before I had time to think about them. Everyone in the room turned to look at me.
Even Amelia's expression shifted. “What?”
“I just found out today,” I said quietly. “The pregnancy isn't mine.”
The room fell silent.
“I have a medical condition.” My voice was steady, but every word felt heavy. “The doctor told me I'm unable to father a child.”
Amelia stared at me in disbelief. “But... the girls?”
“They are mine, I know,” I answered. “It happened after I met you.” I ran a hand through my hair, trying to gather my thoughts.
“If I hadn't gone to the hospital today, I never would have known.” I let out a slow breath. “Camilla has been sleeping with someone else.”
No one said a word, the silence was broken by the vibration of my phone. I reached into my pocket and looked at the screen. It was my mom calling. She and Camilla had been calling me nonstop all day, but I had ignored every call.
This time, I answered.
“Maxwell!” my mother exclaimed the moment I picked up. “Where have you been all day? Camilla has been calling us nonstop. She even went to the hospital looking for you. She's practically losing her mind.”
“I'm fine, Mom,” I replied. “I just have a few things I need to sort out.”
There was a brief pause. “Alright,” she said, sounding relieved. “But I wanted to ask you something.”
“What is it?”
“Did you ask Camilla to come and pick up the children?”
I frowned. “No.”
“She called earlier and said you told her this morning that she should come to the house tonight to pick them up.” My grip tightened around the phone. “She said you gave her the instructions yourself.”
A cold feeling settled in my chest, I already knew what she was trying to do. “No, Mom,” I said firmly. “Do not let her take the kids.” My voice became more serious. “And don't let her into the house.”
