Chapter 140 Chapter 140
Amelia
I left Maxwell's company completely heartbroken. Every bit of hope I had carried with me before going there had been crushed the moment he looked at me like I was a stranger.
It wasn't just that he refused to let me see my daughters, it was the way he spoke to me. The hatred in his voice and coldness in his eyes. No matter how many times I tried to push the memory away, it kept replaying in my head.
I wrapped my arms around myself as I walked into my house, feeling emptier than I ever had. There was no hope of seeing my daughters today but I wasn't going to give up. I would never stop fighting for them.
I would never let my daughters grow up believing I had abandoned them too, just like my parents did.
I sat on the couch in my living room, staring blankly at the television. The TV played in the background, filling the silence with noise, but I wasn't watching it. I only turned it on because I couldn't bear the silence.
A few minutes later, my phone rang on the coffee table, I glanced at the screen. Adele, I quickly picked up the call and answered it.
"Hi, girl. How are you doing?" she asked. Before I could answer, she sighed. "Don't answer. I already know." The concern in her voice made the tears I had been trying so hard to hold back return.
"I went to Maxwell's office today, and he blocked me from entering," I said between sobs. "If you saw the way he looked at me with so much coldness in his eyes."
"We are going to get to the bottom of this, and if Maxwell really have moved on with Camilla, then fuck him. All we need is getting those little brats back. I promise you, once you get them back, you will be fine," Adele said.
I closed my eyes and nodded, even though she couldn't see me. Getting my daughters back was all that mattered now.
"I have news," she said.
I immediately sat up straight on the couch, gripping my phone tighter. "What is it?" I asked.
"I heard that his parents are hosting a dinner at their house tonight. Just a family dinner. If you didn't get an invitation, it means they purposely excluded you," she said.
So Maxwell's parents knew about all of this, for the past two years, we had searched for him together. We had gone to television stations, media houses, and newspaper companies, begging for any information that could help us find him. All that time, they had known he was alive.
They had known he was safe, yet they never told me. The betrayal hurt almost as much as Maxwell's rejection.
"Thank you, Adele," I said quietly.
"We are showing up there tonight," she said. "Get ready. I will pick you up by seven." She ended the call.
By seven o'clock, Adele was already waiting outside my house. I grabbed my phone, locked the front door behind me, and hurried to her car.
The moment I got in, she drove out of the compound. "I am going to fucking kill Maxwell for making you this miserable," she said angrily.
I leaned my head against the window and stared outside. The drive to his parents' mansion felt like the longest journey of my life. My leg wouldn't stop bouncing, my heart was beating so fast that it felt like it would burst out of my chest.
My daughters would be there. If it was truly a private family dinner, there was no way Maxwell would leave them behind. I was finally going to see them again.
"I think we need to involve a lawyer," Adele said after a long silence. "Have you do a DNA test, once you have the results, Maxwell will have no other choice but to release them to you."
I slowly shook my head. "I doubt he's ever going to let that happen," I said. "It's as if they are trying to take my babies away from me on purpose."
"Not to forget the fact that he once threatened to throw you into an asylum," Adele said. "I do not believe that the fool lost his memory or something. I think he's doing all of this on purpose so he can get back with his lover and take the kids from you."
I didn't answer. I wanted to believe Maxwell wasn't capable of something so cruel. But after everything that had happened today, I didn't know what to believe anymore.
A few minutes later, we pulled up in front of his parents' mansion. The security guards immediately stepped in front of the gate, signaling Adele to stop.
One of them walked over to the driver's window. "You can't come in, ma'am. We have been instructed not to let you in," he said.
I let out a bitter laugh. "That's my reality now," I said, turning to Adele.
Without hesitation, she looked at the guard. "I am going to come in, and there is nothing you will do about it," she said. "If you do not open the gate, I am going to drive through it and break your legs. I do not mind going to jail."
Before I could react, she suddenly threw the car into reverse, the tires screeched loudly against the pavement.
"Adele, calm down," I said as she handled the car like a maniac.
Adele slammed her foot on the accelerator and drove straight toward the security guard. He jumped back in fear, raising both hands in surrender.
"I will open the gate!" he shouted immediately before rushing to unlock it. The gates had barely opened when Adele sped inside.
She drove like a woman possessed, refusing to slow down until her car slammed into the back of the vehicle parked in front of us.
The impact threw both of us forward, I barely managed to stop my head from crashing into the dashboard. Before either of us could recover, the front door of the mansion flew open.
Mrs. Sinclair hurried outside, Adele and I got out of the car. The moment my feet touched the ground, I rushed toward the entrance.
Mrs. Sinclair quickly walked toward us, stopping a few steps away as though she intended to block us from entering the house.
"What are you doing here?" she asked immediately. "Leave now. I am going to call you."
I stared at her in disbelief. "You knew where he was all this while, yet you pretended like you knew nothing," I yelled. "I do not have any business with you. I just want to see my kids."
As though they had heard my voice, the front door burst open again. My daughters came running out of the house. They pushed past Mrs. Sinclair and threw themselves into my arms.
"We miss you so much, Mummy. We want to come home," they cried. My heart broke all over again, I wrapped my arms tightly around them, holding them as if I would never let go.
Just then, the front door opened once more. This time, Maxwell and Camilla walked outside together. The moment Maxwell saw me, his face darkened.
"What are you doing here again, for fuck's sake?" he yelled.
I stood up, keeping my daughters close to me. "To take my kids. I do not care whatever you do with your life. I just want my kids back," I said.
His expression hardened. "How dare you?" he snapped. "How dare you claim Amelia's kids as yours? Security!" His voice echoed across the compound. "Come get this nuisance out of here," he barked.
The security guards immediately hurried toward us.
"We do not care if you have to break their legs to drag them away," Camilla said coldly. "Just get them out, and the next time they get into this compound, you will lose your jobs."
The guards continued walking toward us. Something inside me finally snapped, before I even had time to think about what I was doing, I rushed toward Camilla. My hand flew through the air, the back of my hand landed hard across her face.
