Chapter 139: Chapter 139
Amelia
I pulled over in front of Maxwell's company and stepped out of my car. The familiar building stood before me, but everything about it felt different.
For years, I had walked through those doors without anyone questioning me. From the first day I came here, to the period when he forced me to work under him, not once had the security guards stopped me.
Today was different, the moment I tried to drive inside, one of the security guards quickly stepped in front of me, blocking my path.
"I'm so sorry, ma'am," one of the security guards said. "The boss left strict instructions not to let you in. He said you are not allowed anywhere within this vicinity."
As he spoke, he moved in front of my car, making it clear that I wasn't getting past him. "But you know me. I have been coming here for years," I said, trying to reason with him. "You can search my car. There is nothing harmful inside it."
He simply shook his head. "Please just let me in. I am not going to be here for long," I pleaded.
My voice was tired, almost broken. It had been days since I last saw my children. I still had no idea where Maxwell had taken them or where he was living now.
I had even gone to his parents' house hoping they would tell me something, but I wasn't allowed inside. The security guard there had refused to let me in, saying they were on vacation and that I should come back after they returned.
Every door I knocked on had been shut in my face. I was completely drained.
I was exhausted, frustrated, and emotionally worn out. When I looked at my reflection these days, I barely recognized the woman staring back at me. I looked like a shadow of the person I used to be.
Living without Maxwell had been difficult enough, but living without my children was something else entirely. It was torture, that was the only reason I had come here today.
I wanted to beg him. He could stay with Camilla, he could spend the rest of his life with her if that was what he wanted. I would accept it. I would move on. But no matter what happened between us, I couldn't move on without my children.
"You can't come in," the security guard said firmly. He struck the side of my car with his hand before pointing toward the entrance. "Please leave this place. You are blocking other cars from coming in."
I stared at him in disbelief and slowly shook my head. Not once in all the years I had known him had he spoken to me with such disrespect. The same man who used to greet me politely every time I came here now looked at me as though I was nothing more than a nuisance.
For a moment, I stood there, unable to believe how much my life had changed. I turned around and walked back to my car, but I didn't drive away.
Instead, I parked a short distance from the company and returned on foot. If Maxwell wouldn't allow me inside, then I would wait outside until he arrived. Sooner or later, he would drive past the entrance, and he would have to see me.
I had nowhere else to go, I waited for almost two hours. The sun had become unbearable, and my legs were beginning to ache from standing, but I refused to leave. Then a familiar luxury car slowly approached the entrance.
The moment I saw it, I recognized it immediately, it was Maxwell's. My heart began pounding as I hurried toward the car. It rolled to a stop beside the security post.
Maxwell lowered his window and looked in my direction. "Didn't I tell you I don't want to see this woman anywhere on these premises?" he barked.
Camilla was sitting comfortably in the passenger seat. The smile on her face was impossible to miss.
"I already told her to leave. I don't know why she's still standing here," the security guard replied.
Maxwell opened the car door and stepped out. He walked toward me before stopping right in front of me.
"Look at me, you imposter. I have already done enough by letting you get away with stealing someone else's identity," he said, raising a warning finger in my face. "If you push this any further, I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life in prison."
Tears filled my eyes. "I just want my kids back, please. You can't take my daughters away from me," I cried.
"They are not your children," he shouted in my face. "Don't test my patience by coming back here again. I will have you thrown in jail."
Before I could say another word, I reached out to him, hoping he would at least listen. Instead, he shoved me away. I stumbled backward, barely managing to keep my balance before I fell.
He didn't even try to help me. There wasn't a trace of pity on his face. The man who once looked at me with so much love now stared at me with nothing but coldness.
"Get the fuck out of here, you whore," he barked before turning around and getting back into his car.
I stood there as tears streamed uncontrollably down my face. I watched his car disappear into the distance until it was completely out of sight.
Then I broke down, I cried harder than I ever had in my entire life. What had gone wrong? Why didn't he remember me? Had he lost his memory? Or had Camilla somehow filled his mind with lies until he no longer recognized the life we had shared?
As if my thoughts had summoned her, Camilla stepped out and walked back toward me. There was pride in every step she took. She stopped in front of me with a victorious smile on her face.
"You," she said. "Looks like I'm the one who gets the last laugh."
I stepped closer to her. "What did you do to him, you sly bitch?" I shouted.
She slowly shook her head, wearing an overly innocent expression. "Nothing. I only helped him through the trauma of losing his wife two years ago," she said. "Listen carefully, Amelia. You have lost Maxwell to me. Accept your defeat and move on with your life. Go back to that man you were seen with on the news."
I shook my head. "You can have him. I just want my daughters back," I said.
She laughed as though I had said something amusing. "Oh, those little rascals?" she said. "I can't wait for Maxwell to get tired of them and throw them away, but that's his decision to make. Either way, they are not going back to you."
She smiled even wider.
"Besides, Maxwell and I are about to start our own family," she said as she gently rubbed her stomach. "We are expecting a baby boy."
The moment those words left her mouth, it felt as though my heart shattered into a thousand pieces.
