Chapter 269: As She Expected, Everything Under Control
"Emily, you're injured? Looking at your complexion, it's quite serious. Why did you still come here?"
Emily thought Wren's medical skills must have improved - how else could she tell she was injured just by looking?
The four diagnostic methods - observation, listening, inquiry, and palpation. Wren had observed her energy and probably detected the medicine she was using, which confirmed her injury was serious.
Emily didn't hide it and briefly explained what happened. "I'll tell you the details later. The reason I came despite being injured is because I had no choice. What about you? Don't tell me you're also here for those two medicinal herbs?"
For someone studying medicine, after going through the auction list, those two herbs were probably the only items of interest at this auction.
Wren nodded, not surprised that Emily had guessed it.
Emily said, "Don't bother with those two herbs. Someone is determined to get them. I might need your help with something."
"I've only seen those two herbs in books, so I was just curious to see them in person. With my financial resources, if someone is determined to get them, I really have no chance. So I won't feel any regret if I can't get them.
Whatever you need help with, just ask!"
This was someone she considered her teacher. Although Emily didn't think of herself that way, in Wren's heart, she acknowledged Emily as her teacher.
Naturally, she would agree to whatever Emily asked.
"Come closer, let me tell you..."
Emily lowered her voice and whispered a few words in Wren's ear.
Without any hesitation, Wren nodded and said, "Don't worry, I've got this covered!"
"By the way," Wren remembered what her friend who got her the invitation had said, "I heard that for this auction, they guarantee safe delivery of items to addresses within the city."
Emily hadn't expected this pleasant surprise and said with a smile, "That's even better!"
Soon, the auction began.
Wren returned to her seat.
Might as well play the part fully.
During the auction, Wren stayed for a while and bid a few times, but after being outbid each time, she left early.
Emily also bid a few times during the event.
She had indeed taken a liking to one auction item. The price wasn't too high, it was elegant, and within her budget, so Emily bought it.
And so it went.
Until the Celestial Ginseng appeared.
Just before the bidding started, Emily suddenly raised her hand.
"Miss, I'm sorry, but I haven't called the starting price yet. Please wait a moment."
Emily shook her head. "I'm not starting the bidding. I want to say that this is medicinal material, but how can you guarantee what you're giving us is genuine? I need to verify it!"
The auctioneer looked troubled.
Right after, people arranged by Daniel, as well as Daniel himself, also demanded to verify the item.
Now the auctioneer had no choice but to comply.
"I need to ask for instructions. Please wait!"
Soon, the host left.
A moment later, the host returned with a medical expert.
What a coincidence - it was someone Emily knew: Floyd.
Only then did Emily feel relieved.
Originally she had planned to verify it herself, but if it was Floyd, she trusted his medical ethics and abilities, so she didn't insist.
Daniel knew Floyd, but the people he had arranged didn't.
And to avoid anyone discovering their connection - which would make it look like he, Emily, and the arranged people were all working together.
He gave his arranged person a look. Fortunately, there were others who also wanted to examine the herbs, so they went up together with their own doctors to check the medicinal materials.
This was a small interlude.
The herbs were fine.
When the bidding started, Emily naturally joined in, and others who were curious and had heard about the effects couldn't help but bid as well.
However, in the end, without any suspense, Daniel won.
After all, he was Daniel.
His financial resources weren't something ordinary people could match.
Getting both herbs seemed quite easy.
But Emily knew the real danger was just beginning.
Emily left right after the Celestial Ginseng was sold.
As soon as she got in the car, Matilda reminded Emily, "Someone followed you right after you left the venue!"
The person behind this was really cautious, following the principle of better safe than sorry, still wanting to follow and check.
Emily was only surprised for a moment before returning to normal.
"Don't worry about it. They might just be testing. Pretend you haven't noticed and drive normally!"
"Yes!"
Matilda didn't ask why and just did as told.
They followed all the way until a red light intersection. Her car had already passed through, and they didn't catch up.
After that, they stopped pursuing.
"Mr. Johnson, they've stopped following!"
Matilda looked through the rearview mirror and said.
"Good!"
Emily responded.
She wasn't surprised.
After all, they were just testing. The focus should be on Daniel's side.
After returning, Emily didn't go back to the suite Daniel had originally arranged, but instead moved into a room Wren had newly booked. It wasn't far from the suite - the room closest to the elevator.
"Emily, lie down quickly. I've prepared the medicinal materials you asked for. Just lie down and check them."
Seeing Emily arrive, Wren quickly helped her lie down on the sofa, then went to get a package of medicinal materials she had prepared earlier for Emily to inspect.
Emily had been maintaining her composure all along, but now that she relaxed, she really felt uncomfortable.
After lying down, she began checking the herbs Wren handed her.
"Very good. Lucky I ran into you today, otherwise it wouldn't have been easy to gather these herbs with such good quality!"
Emily said.
Wren felt a bit embarrassed. "Two of the special herbs - my teacher only managed to get them when he heard they were for you. Otherwise, with my abilities, it would have been quite difficult."
Emily expressed her gratitude to Wren's teacher as well.
She had actually already prepared the other herbs, but this time was too rushed. She hadn't expected to start making medicine right here, and going directly from Oceancrest City to Emerald City, she hadn't brought those materials at all.
At worst, she could return those herbs to Wren later and add some of her newly made pills. She believed Wren's teacher would be very happy.
Now she just had to wait for Daniel to bring back the two medicinal materials.
Emily had already given them her room number. When the time came, Matilda would find a way to avoid people and get the herbs.
With this short distance, Daniel could conceal Matilda's movements.
Daniel knew the auction house would personally escort the herbs to the hotel, so he felt relieved.
Oliver sent word: "Mr. Smith, the person you had us watch, just as you predicted, left right after you won the bid and immediately went to meet someone. But they were obviously very cautious, so we didn't dare get too close.
After meeting for half an hour, they came out. Our people are still following their movements. Should we take them into custody now?"
"Take action!"
"Yes!"
Daniel paused, then spoke again. "Is everything in place at the hotel? Relaxed on the outside, tight on the inside - understand?"
"Don't worry, Mr. Smith. Everything's arranged at the hotel."
"Good!"
Daniel hung up satisfied, though his furrowed brow never relaxed.
Not until Emily's message came through did his expression ease slightly.
"Speed up, back to the hotel!"
Daniel ordered.
