Chapter 258: A Traitor Appeared?
"Get up, where is she?"
Yosef had a bad feeling the moment he didn't see Sofia.
Since Atticus had been captured, and there was only one road leading to the outside world, Yosef wanted to marry Sofia, so he'd given her some freedom.
And the person following Sofia was just the village lunatic.
What they didn't know was that this lunatic was only pretending to be crazy - she had also been trafficked here.
And she owed Sofia a favor.
So this time, Sofia convinced her to help out.
When Yosef found out Sofia had run away, he immediately sent people to look for her. But he figured Sofia didn't have much ability - even if she ran, she couldn't get far.
So while he sent people to search, he wasn't in a hurry himself, planning to go back and continue playing with women.
But when he reached the door, he saw the two guards lying unconscious.
Only then did Yosef realize something was wrong.
He kicked each of them, glaring down at them viciously.
The two men just opened their eyes, still dizzy, rubbing their heads. When they looked up and saw Yosef's ice-cold face, they were scared completely awake.
They immediately grabbed Yosef's legs, "Mr. Stevens, it was Sofia. She suddenly showed up and knocked us out. We weren't on guard and got knocked out. They must have all run away."
"Useless trash!"
Yosef's face was extremely dark.
"What are you standing there for? Go find them!"
Yosef shouted.
"We'll go look for them right away!"
Yosef's face was dark as he watched several people start searching.
Now he remembered - when that woman and man first came to the village, they said they were looking for Sofia. They must know each other.
But how did Sofia know Emily and the others had come looking for her?
Could there be a mole?
He had some brains to be able to manage all the dirty business in this village without being discovered.
But now wasn't the time to catch the mole.
He first had people watch the exits.
Then he gathered his men and started tracking Sofia and the others.
With Sofia and her companion leading the way, Emily headed straight up the mountain.
But the patrol here came by every half hour.
And they happened to hit that timing.
Emily and Sofia almost ran right into them.
Fortunately, someone suddenly appeared - a very ordinary face, the kind that wouldn't get a second glance in a crowd.
He grabbed Sofia and pulled her aside.
Emily hadn't expected someone to appear so quietly and take Sofia away right under her nose.
The moment she noticed, she chased after them.
The person seemed to have predicted Emily would do this.
He reached out to grab Emily too. His judgment was quite sharp - he actually knew Emily was a skilled fighter.
The instant Emily fought back, he warned in a low voice, "The patrol is coming, follow me!"
Emily met his overly sharp but determined eyes. They didn't have the muddiness of the other people in this village who were in league with Yosef.
Plus, Sofia was in his hands now. Emily only hesitated for a moment before pulling the other person along to follow this man.
He led them behind a rock.
Just as they hid, several patrol members hurried past where they had just been standing.
After the group walked away, Emily and Sofia breathed a little easier.
"With you missing, Yosef won't let this go. Whether it's the mountain path or the exit, they're probably all dangerous now."
The man said seriously in a low voice.
Sofia recognized him and said, "Then Beck, what do you think we should do?"
It was really unexpected that Beck would save her.
This person wasn't from the village. Since returning to the village this time, she and Beck had just met.
And Beck seemed honest and a bit timid. Except for once when he quietly warned her with a couple words, they had no other connection.
Yet this person with such low presence had been bold enough to choose to save her this time.
Emily's gaze, however, glanced at Beck's palm when he spoke.
Then, she had a vague guess in her mind, and the way she looked at Beck changed a bit.
"I know a route that can avoid the search party and get up the mountain, but the mountain is also very dangerous. You need to think it through."
Beck said seriously.
Emily nodded, "Don't worry, we've already thought it through."
She turned and asked Sofia, "Is Beck from your village? Have you known him since childhood?"
Sofia shook her head, "I actually haven't known him long either. Verity might know more about him."
Verity, the woman the village called a lunatic, looked at Beck with a sense of trust.
She said, "Beck is a good person. If it weren't for him, I might really be dead!"
If he really wanted to harm them, he wouldn't have saved them just now. Instead, he would have directly led the patrol to them, and they would have had no chance of escaping.
Emily asked this question also to verify her guess.
"You're not planning to leave here, right? So if you lead us on that route, and if we can get out, what message do you want us to take out?"
For a moment, killing intent flashed in Beck's eyes.
He thought Emily was someone Yosef had found to test him.
He went through everything in his past, wondering where he had been exposed.
When Emily met his eyes full of killing intent, she knew what he was thinking.
She explained, "Don't worry, I'm not one of Yosef's people. Sofia is my cousin, and Atticus should still be in their hands. I came this time to rescue them, so I couldn't possibly be working with Yosef. Besides, this time I cooperated with the country in Zephyria and rescued quite a few people."
Though Sofia didn't know if Emily had really gone to Zephyria to cooperate with the country to rescue compatriots, she knew about Emily going abroad to Zephyria.
And since Emily had returned home safely, Sofia naturally believed she must have succeeded.
Sofia nodded, "Yes, Emily has money and a very good relationship with Mr. Smith, the person in charge of the Smith Group. She has no need to take such risks doing these things! Plus, she's never been to our village before."
Beck still trusted Sofia.
"I'll take you to that hidden path first, but I'm not planning to leave. You must take this stuff out!"
He took out a wrapped handkerchief from his bag. He didn't say what was inside.
As long as Emily was sure it wasn't illegal drugs, she didn't open it to look.
Instead, she took it and put it away, "Don't worry, I'll get this stuff out as soon as possible. Also, do you know where those imprisoned women and Atticus and the others have been taken?"
She was still thinking that York should have been taken away by the village chief and the others by now, wondering if he was imprisoned in the same place as Atticus.
"Since you were able to escape from Yosef, I believe you have the ability to get away. In one day, this group of women and children will be transferred. The address is also in what I gave you, so you must hurry. As for those men, I don't know. I'm not qualified to get into the higher levels yet, but I guess they were probably taken to make drugs."
Beck's expression was more serious than ever.
He was an outsider. Being able to enter here and become a "free person" was already the result of his greatest efforts, let alone getting into the higher levels.
