Chapter 40

Chapter 40

At the police station.

Several police officers looked at Evelyn, curled up on the sofa, with strange expressions.

Fifteen minutes ago, Evelyn had been brought in by two good citizens who'd stepped in to help, along with a suspect accused of attempted kidnapping and rape.

When the officers saw this scene, they were shocked and immediately called the police chief, Wayne Cooper.

Wayne rushed over right away. When he heard that Evelyn had been rescued in time and nothing bad had actually happened, he breathed a huge sigh of relief.

He was just about to approach her with a friendly smile and say a few words when Evelyn reached out and scratched at him.

Even the female officer he'd arranged couldn't get near Evelyn.

For a moment, everyone just looked at each other, not knowing what to do.

She had indeed been slapped a few times, and her shirt had been torn open, but because she'd struggled like crazy, she wasn't overly exposed and hadn't suffered any real harm.

But she was clearly traumatized, reacting even more intensely than women who'd actually been assaulted.

Benjamin rushed over right away.

Behind him was a pure-looking girl who had trouble walking and looked uneasy.

It was the girl from the coffee shop.

As soon as he walked in and saw Evelyn curled up on the sofa, he froze.

Evelyn was a privileged princess.

She'd been born proud and bright, and everything had always gone smoothly for her. When had she ever looked this miserable?

A dense, stabbing pain spread through his chest. His face darkened as he quickly stepped forward.

But before his hand could land on her shoulder, he heard her cold voice: "Get away!"

Evelyn didn't move, but after her pale lips spat out those words, she continued coldly: "Don't touch me."

"I came too late." His hand froze in mid-air.

The officer who'd first received Evelyn stepped forward and quietly explained: "Mr. White, Ms. Thomas is in shock. Since she arrived at the station, she won't let anyone near her."

As he spoke, many people were sizing up Benjamin.

Some people online praised Benjamin and Evelyn's relationship, but plenty of people knew that Evelyn's heart belonged to Matthew.

Seeing this scene, everyone seemed even more certain of that fact.

Samuel saw this and looked at the limping, pure-looking girl, smiling in a particularly teasing way.

"Why would he come here with a woman?"

After looking her over with interest, he asked his subordinate: "She really didn't..."

"Absolutely not! When I got there, the man had just torn open her shirt. But she was obviously scared—when she fought back, she was completely reckless."

It was normal for Evelyn to be scared, but wasn't this reaction a bit much?

Benjamin looked at Evelyn. His face was extremely dark.

He took off his jacket and draped it over her, crouched in front of her, and said gently: "I'll take you home."

Home...

Evelyn, who seemed to be sinking into a deep abyss, suddenly seemed to break through the fog and see light again.

She lifted her head, blinked her hazy eyes, and said in a somewhat hoarse voice: "Benjamin..."

"It's me."

Evelyn's lips moved, but then she caught sight of the girl standing behind him, and her pupils suddenly contracted.

She suddenly let out a low laugh, her voice sounding incredibly cold.

"You said you'd come pick me up. So why was the person driving your car a rapist?"

Benjamin's expression stiffened for a moment: "It was an accident. My car keys suddenly went missing..."

"Are you really that easy to get close to?"

She cut him off, looking at the pure-looking girl.

"I'm sorry. If the accident hadn't happened and Benjamin hadn't been taking me to the hospital, none of this would have happened."

Men always feel protective toward women.

Especially girls as soft and delicate as morning glories—they always make people favor them.

The officers around them didn't say anything, but the looks they gave Evelyn already suggested they thought she was being too aggressive.

As expected of a rich family's daughter, she can't handle the slightest grievance.

Evelyn looked away and turned to Police Chief Wayne: "Could you arrange for someone to take me home?"

"Of course." Wayne couldn't figure out what had happened between them, but he naturally couldn't refuse a request from the Thomas family's young lady.

"I'll take you back." Benjamin's voice was calm, but clearly carried an undertone of pressure.

"Don't you still need to take someone to the hospital?"

She definitely wasn't being understanding, but she wasn't being harsh either.

She pulled off Benjamin's oversized suit jacket and threw it on the ground, then stood up, stepping on it with her high heels.

"Evelyn!" His voice grew heavier, but she ignored him and walked toward the nearest female officer.

The female officer looked uncertainly at the other officers, then at Wayne.

Having a chance to interact with the Thomas family's young lady was naturally good.

But with an unhappy Benjamin in the mix, it didn't seem like such a good thing anymore.

Seeing this, Wayne tried to smooth things over: "This matter..."

"Isn't Mr. White here? He'll help you investigate it. After all, his car keys went missing, and they were stolen by an acquaintance's boyfriend, who then tried to kidnap and assault me. This is serious."

Evelyn's one sentence contained a massive amount of information.

"Evelyn, I'll get to the bottom of this." Benjamin made a promise.

"So it really does need investigating." She smiled again, but the smile looked mocking no matter how you looked at it.

His brow furrowed, a flash of anger in his eyes that he suppressed: "You think I had something to do with it?"

Before Evelyn could speak, the girl stepped forward: "This has nothing to do with Benjamin, Evelyn..."

"I don't know you. Don't let just any trash come up and talk to me."

Evelyn's gaze swept over her, then she walked toward the door without looking at Benjamin again.

At Wayne's signal, the female officer quickly followed.

Outside the police station.

Samuel looked at the girl following behind Benjamin, his face showing a particularly teasing smile.

"Sure, she and her brother have that unclear relationship, but after something this big happened, you still show up in front of her with another girl. Aren't you being a bit much?"

The early autumn wind was cool and dry, but it couldn't blow away the stickiness in his heart.

Benjamin's thin lips pressed into a straight line as he arranged for someone to take the girl away.

"Have you really moved on?" Samuel leaned casually against the car, his expression as unserious as ever.

As if neither Evelyn being hurt nor Benjamin moving on was a big deal.

Samuel was just being nosy and asking out of curiosity.

When Samuel got no answer, he wasn't in a hurry. Instead, he said unhurriedly, "Looks like I was meddling. Today's incident looks more like you were trying to kill two birds with one stone. But I messed it up. Should I arrange someone?"

Benjamin's cold gaze shot over, but he still smiled carelessly.

Benjamin irritably pulled out cigarettes and a lighter from Samuel's pocket, took a deep drag, but the tightness in his chest only became more obvious.

"She's Freya Stewart."

Samuel, who'd been smiling a second ago, suddenly changed expression: "Soren Stewart's sister?"

"Yes."

Samuel and Benjamin both smoked silently, their faces covered with a layer of coldness that made people afraid to approach.

After a long while, Samuel finally spoke: "Evelyn is traumatized, and today's events were really too coincidental. It's normal for her to have some misunderstandings. You need to explain it clearly."
