Chapter 39

Chapter 39

After Idris finished speaking, he quickly covered his mouth, afraid he'd be silenced the next second.

Samuel narrowed his eyes. "How did Benjamin end up assigning such an idiot to follow me? If his fiancée gets hurt, you can explain to him yourself that you refused to save her."

"What?"

He withdrew his gaze and looked straight ahead again. "You've been with him so long—have you ever seen that driver?"

The sudden jolt of the car made Evelyn open her eyes.

She frowned slightly. This driver hadn't gotten out to open the door for her right away, and his driving skills weren't great either. How did he become Benjamin's driver?

Out of the corner of her eye, Evelyn noticed the surroundings. Her gaze sharpened.

"Which hospital is he at?"

"It's a private hospital." The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror, answering quickly.

"I asked which hospital specifically."

"I can't remember the exact name."

Was this how a driver should answer?

Evelyn stopped paying attention to the driver and took out her phone to make a call. But just as her finger pressed the dial button, the car braked suddenly, causing her to crash into the front seat, completely unprepared.

Her phone fell from her hand, momentarily out of reach.

Growing up, she had been the Thomas family's treasured pearl, but safety precautions had never been neglected.

It was only after getting engaged to the White family that such protection decreased.

After all, Benjamin's mother was a princess of the underworld, controlling almost all its forces. Who would dare touch her?

Turns out, someone really wasn't afraid to die.

The slightly tipsy state she'd been in earlier had now completely cleared. Her neatly trimmed nails dug into her palm, forcing herself to stay calm.

"You want money? How much? Let me go, and I can arrange it immediately."

Whether it was God's deliberate arrangement or not, the car was on the road to the west side of the city.

It was close to the suburbs. Quite a few cars were coming and going, but who would notice a car parked on the roadside?

The driver turned to look at her, pointing a fruit knife at her throat.

"Evelyn."

His voice was hoarse, his eyes filled with anger. "Why are you so fickle? You're already Benjamin's fiancée—why are you still messing around with Matthew?"

She froze. Could this man be connected to Matthew?

Her mind went blank, and before she could process what was happening, the phone on the floor started vibrating.

A casual glance showed Benjamin's name on the screen.

But right now, she felt no sense of safety. Instead, she felt that the dangerous situation she was in was because of him!

"He's still calling you!" The man's smile twisted his face. "He has another woman out there—did you know that?"

The image of that innocent-looking girl flashed through Evelyn's mind.

She clenched her fists again, not allowing herself to overthink. Staying alive was the most important thing.

Once you're dead, nothing matters anymore.

But she wasn't sure how to answer without provoking the man in front of her.

He didn't seem to need her answer anyway. "It's all because you're shameless!"

The man's face, which had been fairly decent-looking, now appeared twisted.

Especially his eyes—they looked like they wanted to carve out chunks of flesh from Evelyn's body.

"Benjamin treats you so well, but you're hooking up with Matthew, so he went after my girlfriend!"

Evelyn was stunned for a moment.

She knew this wasn't the time to get distracted, but she really hadn't expected to hear such explosive gossip.

Not only had Benjamin betrayed their engagement, but he'd gone after someone else's girlfriend?

Ridiculous!

Right now, the person she most wanted to kill had shifted from Sophia and Matthew to Benjamin.

She quickly gathered her thoughts, trying to keep her voice steady.

"Matthew is my family's adopted son. We only have sibling affection."

"As for Benjamin and me, as you said, he treats me very well. Our relationship is very good."

"Before long, we'll be getting married."

"So he couldn't possibly betray me, much less have anything going on with your girlfriend. You've misunderstood."

Whether it was a misunderstanding or not, Evelyn didn't want to know.

Right now, the important thing was to calm down the man in front of her and ensure her own safety.

As for everything else, she could settle those scores later.

"Misunderstanding? Why else would he keep going to see my girlfriend?"

"My girlfriend sprained her ankle, and he wouldn't let me take her to the hospital—he went himself instead."

"He even made my girlfriend break up with me. Tell me, is that a misunderstanding?"

So Benjamin hadn't come to pick her up because the girl had sprained her ankle and needed to go to the hospital?

And now, the girl's boyfriend had kidnapped her?

Killing two birds with one stone—convenient for the girl to break up, and with her gone, the girl could successfully take her place?

If she hadn't experienced all that filth and horror in her previous life, she would probably have gone crazy right then and there.

Why was Benjamin doing this to her?

Evelyn closed her eyes, her voice slightly hoarse. "This is simple. Let me go. I'll make Benjamin stop seeing her and marry me right away."

Meeting his eyes, she said word by word, "You said it yourself—he treats me well. I can control him. If something happens to me, there'll be no one to stop him from being with your girlfriend."

Whether that would be the outcome, she didn't know.

But right now, this was all she could say.

"You're very beautiful." The man stared at her, his smile eerie.

Her face turned pale instantly.

Complimenting someone on their beauty was normal, but whether there was another meaning behind it, only the people involved would know.

Evelyn felt the intense gaze.

She was practically grinding her teeth. "If you dare touch me, not just Benjamin, but the Thomas family won't let you go either..."

A slap cut off her words.

"The Thomas family? If you weren't fooling around with Matthew, why would Benjamin look for someone else? Women like you are the most disgusting—your fiancé treats you well, but you don't treasure it, and you're having affairs with other men."

He seemed to sink into his own world, angrily accusing Evelyn and slapping her hard again.

"Women like you are cheap, desperate for men! Benjamin dared to touch my girlfriend, so I'm going to sleep with his fiancée!"

As he spoke, he reached out to tear her shirt.

The sudden turn of events left Evelyn a bit dazed. When his hand reached for her, the terrifying experiences from her past life flashed through her mind one by one, and she started screaming uncontrollably.

"Don't touch me! Get away!"

"Playing the virtuous woman now?" The man's voice carried a twisted madness. "You betrayed Benjamin, so he went after my woman! Now I'm going to let him know that his woman has been slept with by someone else too!"

Images of those vile men in Zephyria's red-light district rushing at her, tearing her clothes, their filthy hands groping all over her body flashed through her mind.

When the dirty breath pressed against her, she screamed like a madwoman.

"Get away!"

The fear and the weight pressing down on her made her feel like she was falling back into those tragic years.

There was no rebirth, no redemption. Evelyn's nerves completely snapped at that moment.

She fell into a near-hysterical state.

"Get away! I said Get away!"
