Chapter 18

Cassandra walked into the house, her face slightly flushed from the evening chill. Evelyn and I had been pacing back and forth in the living room, worried sick. She had been gone since morning, and we had no idea where she was. Just as I was about to call her again, she finally appeared, laden with shopping bags.

Relief washed over me, and I rushed to her, pulling her into a tight hug. "Where have you been? We were worried sick!" I exclaimed, my voice a mix of concern and frustration.

She returned the hug, her body relaxing in my arms. "I'm sorry for worrying you. I met a young man who needed help. He was in bad shape, so I took him to the hospital," she explained.

Evelyn, who had been watching us, stepped forward, her face stern. "You need to be very careful, Cassandra. Marcus Vane has escaped from jail again, and he's a complete psychopath."

Cassandra sighed, "I know, but he will be caught soon enough. The police are on high alert."

Evelyn shook her head. "You don't understand. Marcus has changed his face about fifteen times. He could be anyone. He could be standing right next to you, and you wouldn't even know it."

I took the bags from Cassandra and handed them to the maid, instructing her to take them to the kitchen. "Why don't you go freshen up? Dinner will be ready soon," I suggested gently.

Cassandra nodded and headed upstairs. As soon as she was out of earshot, Evelyn turned to me. "She has such a good heart, Teddy. I just hope it doesn't end up being the death of her."

I nodded in agreement, a lump forming in my throat. "She'll be okay. She's strong."

Evelyn sighed. "I hope so. By the way, the family is inviting you and Cassandra for dinner tomorrow night. They want to get to know her better."

I smiled, though I knew my mother could be hard to please. "We'll be there."

The next day, Cassandra and I prepared for our visit to my family’s house. Cassandra looked stunning in a simple yet elegant dress. I could tell she was nervous, but she hid it well. As we drove to the family estate, I held her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

When we arrived, my mother greeted us at the door, her eyes scrutinizing Cassandra. "Welcome," she said, her tone polite but reserved.

Cassandra smiled warmly. "Thank you for having us."

As we stepped inside, the grandeur of the house was evident. High ceilings, ornate chandeliers, and luxurious furnishings filled the space. The family had gathered in the drawing-room, and introductions were made. My grandparents were there, their faces lighting up at the sight of Cassandra.

Dinner was served in the large dining room. My mother watched Cassandra closely throughout the meal, asking her various questions about her background, her interests, and her plans for the future. At first, her questions were sharp and probing, but Cassandra answered each one with grace and poise.

As the evening progressed, I could see my mother's demeanor softening. By the time dessert was served, she was smiling and laughing with Cassandra. My grandparents were also taken with her, charmed by her kindness and intelligence.

After dinner, we moved to the sitting room for coffee. My mother leaned over to Cassandra and said, "You know, I wasn’t sure about you at first. But you’ve proven to be a remarkable woman. I hope you and Teddy will give me a grandchild soon."

Cassandra blushed, smiling shyly. "Thank you. That means a lot."

My grandparents chimed in, expressing their happiness and support for our relationship. It was a relief to see my family accepting Cassandra so warmly.

After we returned home from the family dinner, I could tell that Cassandra was still thinking about the young man she had helped the previous day. She seemed preoccupied, her mind elsewhere as she prepared for bed.

As we lay down, I turned to her. "Is everything okay?"

She sighed. "I can’t stop thinking about that young man. There was something off about him, but I can't put my finger on it."

I wrapped my arm around her, pulling her close. "You did what you could. You helped him. That’s more than most people would do."

She nodded, resting her head on my chest. "I know. I just hope he’s okay."

The next morning, we woke up to the sound of frantic news reports. The police department was in chaos after discovering that Marcus Vane had escaped from prison. Officers were searching the city, and the bodies of seven police officers had been found. The CCTV footage showed Marcus killing them, inflicting the wound on his own neck, and then escaping with a twisted grin.

Cassandra watched the news with a horrified expression. "I can’t believe he’s out there."

Evelyn, who had joined us in the living room, looked grim. "He’s more dangerous than ever. We have to be on our guard."

I nodded, feeling a sense of dread. Marcus Vane was a threat to everyone, and we needed to stay vigilant.

********* ALEXANDER MANSION********"

Lily waited until the house was shrouded in darkness and everyone was asleep before slipping out of her bedroom window. She made her way to the garden, her heart racing with excitement. Her lover, Mark, was already there, waiting for her. They embraced, their lips locking in a passionate kiss.

Just as they were getting intimate, Rachel's scream pierced the night air. "Alexander, come quick!" she shouted.

Alexander rushed downstairs, his mother's phone in hand. "What is it, Mother?" he asked, looking around frantically for Lily.

"I saw shadows outside," Rachel replied, her voice trembling. "I think someone's lurking around the house."

Alexander quickly scanned the area, but Lily was nowhere to be found. He rushed outside to investigate, and that's when he saw her, standing by the garden gate, trying to look innocent.

"Lily, what are you doing out here?" Alexander asked, his eyes narrowing.

Lily thought fast. "I came out to get some fresh air and heard some noise. I was trying to see who it was," she lied, trying to sound convincing.

Alexander looked skeptical, but he didn't push the issue. "Let's go inside, Mother's worried."

As soon as they were all back inside, Lily signaled to her lover to leave immediately. He nodded and slipped away into the night, unnoticed by the others.

Alexander turned to Lily, his eyes still suspicious. "You're sure you didn't see anything?"

Lily smiled sweetly. "No, Alexander, I promise. I was just getting some water."

Alexander nodded, but he couldn't shake off the feeling that Lily was hiding something from him.
