Chapter 17

★★★ POLICE DEPARTMENT ★★★

The next day, the New York City Police Department was thrown into chaos. Officers ran back and forth, their faces etched with shock and fear. The news that Marcus Vane had escaped from prison had sent waves of panic through the building. Marcus Vane, the notorious psychopath, had managed to slip through their fingers, leaving a trail of blood and death in his wake.

Captain Rogers, the head of the department, stood in the control room, watching the CCTV footage from the prison. His jaw tightened as he witnessed the brutal scenes unfold. Marcus had killed seven police officers during his escape, each death more gruesome than the last. The footage showed Marcus inflicting the wound on his neck himself, using it as a macabre diversion. The officers had rushed to help him, only to meet their demise at his hands.

As Marcus made his escape, he paused to scratch and lick his wound, his eyes locking onto the camera. With a twisted grin, he gave the camera a "fuck you" sign before disappearing into the darkness. Captain Rogers turned away from the screen, feeling a chill run down his spine. Marcus Vane was out there, and he knew the city wasn’t safe.

"We need to find him, and fast," Rogers barked to his team. "Search every inch of this city. We can’t let him continue his reign of terror."

*******

The search for Marcus Vane intensified. The city was on high alert, with officers combing through every possible hideout and contacting their informants. Captain Rogers knew that capturing Marcus was their top priority, but he also knew it wouldn’t be easy. Marcus was a master of evasion, and they had already lost precious time.

They have to find him........ They just have to find hy....

Cassandra had just finished her shopping at the local supermarket. As she exited the store, balancing several bags in her arms, she noticed a man leaning against the wall, looking disoriented. His flesh was beginning to decay, attracting a swarm of flies. His appearance was enough to make most people recoil in disgust, but Cassandra's heart went out to him.

She approached him cautiously. "Hey, are you okay?" she asked, her voice gentle but filled with concern.

The man looked up at her, his eyes hollow but with a flicker of something unreadable. "I’m fine," he lied, his voice raspy.

Cassandra wasn’t convinced. "You don’t look fine. What’s your name?"

He hesitated for a moment, then said, "Mark. My name is Mark."

"Okay, Mark. You need to see a doctor. Let me help you," she insisted, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Without waiting for his consent, she gently guided him to her car. Despite his initial resistance, he found himself unable to refuse her kindness. Cassandra drove him to the nearest hospital, where the staff quickly attended to his wounds.

As they waited for the doctors to finish treating his injuries, Cassandra sat beside him in the waiting room. She couldn’t help but scold him, her voice a mix of frustration and care.

"What were you thinking, Mark? You could have gotten an infection, or worse. Why didn’t you get this treated sooner?" she demanded.

He looked at her, surprised by the intensity of her concern. "I didn’t think anyone would care," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.

Cassandra’s expression softened. "Well, I care. You need to take better care of yourself."

For the first time in a long while, Marcus felt something other than rage and hatred. He felt a strange warmth in his chest as he watched Cassandra. Her scolding reminded him of how an older sister might treat a younger, wayward brother. He couldn’t remember the last time someone had spoken to him with such genuine concern.

"I’m sorry," he said, almost involuntarily.

She raised an eyebrow. "Good. Now promise me you’ll take care of yourself."

He nodded, feeling an odd sense of calm wash over him. "I promise."

As the doctors finished their work, Marcus was moved to a private room to rest. Cassandra stayed by his side, refusing to leave until she was sure he was okay. She busied herself by rearranging his pillows and making sure he was comfortable.

"You really don’t have to do this," Marcus said, his voice sounding stronger now.

"I know," Cassandra replied with a small smile. "But I want to."

He stared at her, trying to understand why she was being so kind. "Why are you doing this? You don’t even know me."

She shrugged. "Everyone needs a little help sometimes. And besides, you remind me of someone."

"Who?" he asked, genuinely curious.

"My younger brother," she said softly. "He used to get into all sorts of trouble, but he had a good heart."

Marcus felt a pang of something he couldn’t quite identify. It wasn’t often that someone compared him to a person with a good heart. "What happened to him?"

"He passed away a few years ago," she said, her eyes distant. "I guess helping you makes me feel like I’m helping him, in a way."

Marcus felt a lump in his throat. For a moment, he was at a loss for words. "Thank you," he said finally.

Marcus’s mind was working overtime. He knew he had to stay under the radar, but he also had to keep an eye on Teddy and Cassandra. Their involvement in his life, however unwittingly, was something he couldn’t ignore.

As he lay in the hospital bed, he watched Cassandra move around the room, her presence calming his usually turbulent thoughts. For the first time, he felt a sliver of doubt about his plans. But he quickly pushed it aside. He couldn’t afford to be distracted, not now.

Cassandra left the hospital that evening, promising to check in on Mark the next day. As she walked back to her car, she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to his story than he was letting on. But for now, she was content knowing she had helped someone in need.

Marcus, on the other hand, was already planning his next move. He had to remain hidden, but he also had to stay close to the people who mattered. He needed to keep an eye on Teddy and Cassandra, and he needed to figure out how to use his newfound connection to his advantage.

As night fell over the city, the pieces of the puzzle were starting to come together. Marcus knew that the road ahead would be dangerous, but he thrived on danger. The thrill of the hunt, the adrenaline of the chase—these were the things that made him feel alive.

In his hospital bed, he closed his eyes and let the darkness envelop him. Tomorrow was a new day, and with it would come new opportunities. He would be ready, and he would be waiting.

Cassandra's goodness will be the end of her. She's helping a psychopath who out to kill and her husband. She's too good for this wicked world, even after everything she has endured in life???
