Chapter 73
Seraphine's POV
Being held by Octavius, kissing in the hospital hallway, my cheeks were so hot they could have burned.
Especially when I sensed Mitchell's gaze, a strange sense of satisfaction rose in my heart, along with the embarrassment.
Didn't he like to act?
It was just a pity that compared to Octavius, his little tricks were simply laughable.
I deliberately raised an eyebrow in the direction of the hospital room, then let Octavius put his arm around my shoulder and turn to leave.
"Seraphine, don't go! My head hurts!"Mitchell still tried to keep me, but I didn't even turn my head back.
Sitting in the car, the heat on my face gradually subsided.
I leaned back in the comfortable leather seat, and suddenly remembered another major matter weighing on my mind.
Orion!
"Octavius," I turned my head to look at Octavius, "if I suspect that someone faked their death many years ago and isn't really dead, how can I investigate to find conclusive evidence?"
Octavius looked at me upon hearing this, his eyes carrying a hint of inquiry.
But he didn't press me on who this person was, instead pondering and giving me advice. "Faking a death is nothing more than hiding one's identity. You can start with the accounts that weren't completely closed before his death."
"Especially the flow of funds overseas."
"And his past network of relationships. See if anyone has maintained an unusual connection with his personal accounts after his death."
Octavius paused here and looked at me. "Do you need my help?"
My heart stirred.
His suggestion had indeed given me a direction.
But Octavius had already promised to help me investigate the car accident.
And the matter of Orion and Amara involved the internal secrets of the Whitaker family.
I didn't want to drag him into this muddy water for the time being.
"No need," I shook my head and gave Octavius a grateful smile. "You've already helped me a lot. You don't have to trouble yourself with the car accident. I want to try this myself first."
Octavius looked at me for two seconds and didn't insist, just nodded lightly.
The car stopped in front of the Whitaker Mansion.
When I walked into the living room, everyone was very surprised.
Heath put down the financial newspaper in his hand and asked in confusion, "Aren't you staying at the hospital to take care of Mitchell?"
Amara spoke in a sarcastic tone, "Couldn't stand it after such a short time? You're really heartless."
I couldn't be bothered to waste my breath on her. I directly picked up the remote control, turned on the TV in the living room, and switched to the news channel.
After doing all this, I nodded to Heath."Dad, look at the news."
Heath looked at me in confusion, then at the news.
Coincidentally, the TV was broadcasting the footage of me being interviewed at the hospital.
"I have used all my personal savings to hire the top medical expert teams from home and abroad,"
"Betrayal is betrayal, and I will never forgive it. Don't emotionally blackmail me."
On the TV, I faced the camera, my attitude neither servile nor overbearing.
After the news broadcast, Heath put down the newspaper, a look of approval on his face."Seraphine, you did the right thing. You handled it very well! You've preserved the face of our Whitaker family and didn't let yourself be wronged."
Amara watched from the side, her face turning green with anger.
She thought I would be held hostage by Mitchell and public opinion at the hospital, but she didn't expect me to launch a beautiful counterattack with public opinion.
Especially now that I had Heath's approval.
Amara opened her mouth, wanting to accuse me, but under Heath's gaze, she swallowed her words.
She could only glare at me fiercely.
I ignored her and didn't want to give her a good look. I turned and went upstairs in a good mood.
After finishing my work, I came out to get a glass of water.
As I passed Amara's room, I noticed that her door was ajar, and the light was on inside.
I could vaguely hear the sound of running water from the bathroom.
She was taking a shower.
A thought flashed through my mind.
Could there be something about Orion on her computer?
My heart skipped a beat, and I subconsciously looked around.
The hallway was empty.
I made a quick decision, gently pushed open her door, and slipped inside.
Amara's laptop was on the vanity, the screen still lit. It had just been used and hadn't had time to go to sleep.
I quickly walked to the computer, my fingers flying across the mouse, and opened her email interface.
The most recent email immediately caught my eye.
The sender was a strange, encrypted email address.
The email wasn't long, but it sent a chill down my spine.
[She's harder to deal with than we thought. We must get the shares and project leadership from her as soon as possible. We can't delay any longer!]
[Regarding the overseas account, she might investigate along that line. You must handle it cleanly on your end. If necessary, you can hire 'professionals'.]
[For our future grand plan, to truly control the Whitaker family, we must be more cautious and focused now. She is the biggest obstacle at the moment.]
The email was unsigned, but the content was clearly about me.
And the person exchanging emails with Amara was, by all accounts, the possibly still-alive Orion.
They had been secretly plotting to take over the Whitaker family's business!
My heart was pounding. I wanted to take out my phone and take a picture of this crucial page.
"Seraphine? What are you doing in my room?"
A stern voice suddenly came from behind me.
I froze and spun around.
Heath was standing at the door of the room, his brows furrowed as he looked at me.
On the computer screen in front of me was still the email exchange between Amara and the suspected Orion.
It was better not to let Heath know before I had investigated the matter thoroughly.
I turned around, forced a smile, and casually pressed a key on the keyboard.
"I saw Mom's computer seemed to be a bit stuck, and the screen was still on. I just wanted to see if there were any programs that hadn't been closed."
As I spoke, I calmly closed the laptop.
Heath stood at the door, seemingly not having seen the specific content on the screen.
He looked at the closed laptop, and his tone softened slightly. "Don't touch her computer. She's been tinkering with it lately and won't let me see it. By the way, have you finished your work?"
"Yes, I was just about to report to you on the recent progress of the project department."I immediately followed his words to change the subject, secretly relieved.
It seemed I had managed to fool him for now.
"Then let's talk in the study."Heath turned and walked towards the study.
I quickly followed, and as I passed the vanity, a layer of cold sweat had formed on my palm.
In the study.
I briefly reported on the recent work of the project department and the progress of the cooperation with the Capulet Group.
Heath listened, occasionally nodding, looking quite satisfied with my work.
After finishing my report, I didn't leave immediately. I chose my words carefully and casually brought up, "Dad, speaking of which, since Uncle Orion is no longer here, it seems the family hasn't hired a new butler? The maids are taking care of everything. Isn't it a bit inconvenient?"
Heath leaned back in his chair, a complex look in his eyes, and sighed."Orion was indeed a steady and meticulous butler. He arranged things in an orderly manner, and he could consider many details that I hadn't thought of. When he was here, I didn't have to worry about any of the family's affairs."
He paused, his tone tinged with regret. "After his accident, I tried to find a few butlers, but I always felt they weren't right, that they couldn't reach his level."
"Over time, I just couldn't be bothered to look for one anymore. Anyway, the maids in the house are enough."
I looked at Heath's regretful expression and narrowed my eyes.
I hadn't expected Orion to be such a good and upright person in Heath's eyes.
"Uncle Orion was that capable?"I showed a timely curiosity. "Then why didn't he join the company to help you back then? With his abilities, he could have definitely become your right-hand man."
At the mention of this, Heath's face darkened slightly, as if he were reluctant to talk about it.
