The days passed slowly for Rael, who continued to explore Ravenshade cautiously. He had settled into a routine of avoiding crowded areas and exploring the outskirts of town. The forest was still his favorite place, despite the unsettling scent of vampires that occasionally lingered in the air. He knew he was being watched, but he didn't let it bother him. Wolves like him were accustomed to surveillance and constant threat.
One cold morning, Rael decided to walk to a more secluded part of the forest.
The mist crept across the ground like a ghostly blanket, and the air was heavy, almost oppressive. He was lost in thought when he realized he wasn't alone. Someone was there — their presence clear and intentional. Rael stopped and looked around, his senses heightened, but saw no one. Still, he knew he was being watched.
Suddenly, a tall, slender figure emerged from the shadows of the trees. Darius Darkblood. He approached slowly, without making a sound. Darius’s eyes, sharp and cold, were fixed on Rael, analyzing him as if he were an interesting specimen.
— I see you enjoy venturing into dangerous territory, wolf — Darius said, his voice soft but laden with a veiled threat.
Rael didn't respond immediately. He kept his gaze firmly on Darius, recognizing the implied danger. The Darkbloods were powerful and disliked intruders.
— I just like walking — Rael finally replied, his voice neutral.
Darius smiled, a gesture that didn’t reach his eyes.
— Walking can lead to dangerous paths, especially for those who don’t belong here.
Rael shrugged, undeterred.
— Maybe I’m just passing through.
Darius stared at him for a few more seconds, his gaze piercing as if trying to unearth secrets.
— Let’s see if the wind blows your way, wolf.
With that, he turned and disappeared back into the forest, as silently as he had appeared.
Rael watched until Darius was completely out of sight. He knew it had been a warning — a display of power. But Rael would not be easily intimidated. He was a lone wolf for a reason, and he knew how to handle himself.
That night, Rael decided to head to Nathan’s usual bar. It was a place where he could observe and gather information without attracting too much attention. Upon entering, the atmosphere seemed more crowded than usual. He sat at the bar and ordered a drink. Nathan, the bartender, gave him a wary look, as if he knew something was about to happen.
The bar was busier, but even so, Rael noticed immediately when Cedric walked in. The man was imposing, with a presence that demanded attention. He moved around the place like a predator stalking its prey, and when his eyes locked on Rael, he smiled in a way that made Rael’s stomach churn.
Cedric approached and stood beside Rael without asking permission.
— You’re the lone wolf everyone’s talking about — he said, his voice low but filled with authority.
Rael glanced at him sideways, remaining calm.
— And you’re the alpha of the pack that’s around here.
Cedric let out a short, humorless laugh.
— Perceptive. But you’re on my turf, and I want to know what you’re up to here.
— I’m not looking for trouble — Rael replied, turning to face Cedric. — I’m just passing through.
— Passage or not, you’re treading on dangerous ground, wolf — Cedric leaned in a little closer, his tone becoming menacing. — And I don’t like surprises.
Rael maintained his firm posture, his eyes fixed on Cedric’s.
— Maybe you should worry more about the vampires than me.
Cedric narrowed his eyes, his smile fading.
— Vampires are a problem for all of us. But you’re a new problem, and I like to keep things under control.
The two of them were silent for a moment, the air around them thick with tension. Rael knew he was playing a dangerous game, but he also knew he couldn’t show weakness.
Cedric finally pulled away, still eyeing Rael suspiciously.
— I’ll give you some advice, wolf. Don’t do anything that might give me a reason to hunt you.
Rael simply nodded, knowing that this encounter wouldn’t end there. Cedric walked away and returned to the bar, still casting occasional glances in Rael’s direction.
When the tension finally subsided, Nathan approached with a fresh drink for Rael.
— You like to live dangerously, don’t you? — the bartender commented, trying to lighten the mood.
Rael took the drink but didn’t respond. He knew he was attracting too much attention, but there was no way around it. Ravenshade was a place full of secrets and dangers, and he was only just beginning to understand the extent of what he’d gotten himself into.
As he finished his drink, Rael realized the night was just beginning, and that each step he took brought him deeper into Darkblood and Wolves’ territory. There was a silent war going on, and he was right in the middle of it.
