The sun was barely peeking over the horizon when Selene awoke in her dark room. The darkness was comforting, a constant reminder of her true nature and the world she belonged to. The thick curtains blocked the morning light, keeping the room shrouded in shadow. She stretched slowly, preparing for another day of her double life: ordinary college student and heir to the Dark Blood Clan.
Selene dressed modestly — dark jeans and a black sweater — trying to blend in with the other humans at the university. She descended the stairs silently, but her mother, Amara, was already in the living room, as always. Amara's watchful, incisive gaze scrutinized her daughter's every move.
— Are you going straight to college? — she asked, her voice soft but full of authority.
— Yes, I have history class — Selene replied, picking up an apple from the table. Human food was still part of her routine, but it was no longer a necessity.
— Remember to keep up appearances. And, of course, stay out of trouble.
Selene simply nodded, accustomed to the daily instructions. Life in Ravenshade was a game of appearances and secrets, and she was an important piece in that game. She quickly left the house, taking a deep breath of the fresh morning air as she stepped onto the street. The university was her refuge, a place where she could pretend to be normal, at least for a few hours.
At university, she followed her usual routine. Classes were monotonous, but they offered a welcome distraction. Her classmates saw her as a reserved and mysterious young woman, unaware of what lay hidden behind her clear eyes and polite smile. She spent the day among books and academic discussions, keeping her distance from curious eyes — especially from Annalise, her best human friend, who always tried to encourage her to engage in a more active social life.
Meanwhile, across town, Rael woke in his hotel room. The weak Ravenshade sun barely illuminated the room. He stretched, feeling his tense muscles relax. He wasn't yet accustomed to the unsettling calm of the place, but something about the city drew him in. Perhaps it was the forests surrounding it — mysterious and inviting.
After a quick and quiet breakfast, he set out to explore. He grabbed his motorcycle and headed to the edge of the forest. There was a sense of freedom there, amid the ancient trees and the scent of wet earth. Rael walked through the shadows, feeling an immediate connection with nature. This was his domain — the place where he could be himself, far from human gaze and the rules imposed by the world.
As he delved deeper into the woods, he noticed a peculiar scent. Different from his usual, it was sweet and metallic: vampire. His instincts went into overdrive. He stopped, alert, sensing their presence in the distance. It wasn't safe to continue. He knew he was being watched and that the vampires of Ravenshade wouldn't appreciate a wolf prowling their territory.
Resigned, he returned the same way. The forest had lost some of its charm now that he knew he wasn't completely free there. Back in town, he decided to seek another form of distraction. He remembered a nightclub he'd noticed the night before — discreet, inviting for those seeking to forget, at least for a few hours.
The bar was quiet when he entered. The dim lighting and low music created a refuge for lonely souls. Rael sat at the bar and ordered a strong drink. As he surveyed the scene, a young woman with long brown hair and bright eyes approached and sat next to him, flashing an insinuating smile.
— You’re new around here — she commented, her eyes fixed on his.
Rael watched her for a moment before answering:
— Yes, I'm just passing through.
— Passage can last a lifetime in Ravenshade — she replied, her smile widening. — I’m Becca, by the way.
— Rael.
He raised his glass in silent greeting.
They chatted for a while, the conversation light and casual. Becca was charming and direct, something Rael appreciated. She didn't ask complicated questions or try to uncover his secrets. They drank together, and the night wore on, and the tension between them became almost palpable. Rael wasn't there to get involved, but the desire to lose himself, even if only for a few hours, was strong.
Words soon became unnecessary. They left the bar together, guided by the silent language of gestures. In the nearby alley, they shrouded themselves in the darkness and anonymity of the night.
The encounter was brief and without promises. Rael knew there was no future in that interaction, but for one night, he allowed himself to forget who he was and the burden he carried. Becca, in turn, seemed understanding, without demanding more than he was willing to offer.
When it was all over, she walked away with the smile still on her lips, without any regret or expectation.
— Perhaps we'll meet again, Rael — she said softly, before disappearing into the dark street.
Rael remained for a few moments, his mind already returning to his worries. He looked up at the sky, where the full moon hid behind the clouds, and felt a pang of loneliness. Ravenshade still held secrets, and he was determined to discover what had brought him there.
Back at the hotel, he threw himself on the bed, his eyes fixed on the ceiling. The night's events swirled in his mind. Tomorrow would be a new day, and he would have to be more careful. The presence of the vampires was a reminder that he wasn't safe. But Rael knew how to handle danger.
