The Edge of Betrayal 2
Power was shifting.
Sophia could feel it... like the subtle change in the air before a storm, heavy and charged, waiting to strike.
She sat in her private study, the letter from Giovanni De Luca still resting on the desk before her, the weight of its message sinking deeper into her mind.
*"We should meet. Matteo doesn’t need to know."*
Those six words carried the weight of an empire.
It wasn’t just an invitation.
It was a test.
Would she take the bait? Would she step into the den of a man who had spent his entire life wielding power in the shadows?
Would she betray Matteo before he had the chance to betray her first?
She traced the rim of her whiskey glass absentmindedly, lost in thought.
She had spent years ensuring that no one... not Matteo, not Conti, not even Ethan... could ever control her.
And yet, here she was, standing at the precipice of a decision that would shape the future of the Moretti and De Luca families.
A knock at the door.
Sharp. Firm.
She already knew who it was.
"Come in," she called, not bothering to turn around.
Ethan entered, his presence filling the room like an unspoken question.
He didn't say anything at first, just crossed the space between them with measured steps, his eyes flicking to the letter still sitting open on her desk.
Sophia exhaled, leaning back against her chair. "If you have something to say, Cross, say it."
Ethan tilted his head. "You haven’t answered him yet."
Sophia smirked. "Maybe I like keeping men waiting."
Ethan’s gaze darkened slightly. "Matteo won’t wait forever. Neither will Giovanni."
Sophia studied him. "And you? How long will you wait?"
Ethan exhaled, stepping closer, his fingers brushing over the edge of the desk. "I’ll wait until I know whose side you’re really on."
Sophia’s lips curled. "You assume I’ll pick a side at all."
Ethan leaned in, just slightly. "You don’t have the luxury of neutrality, Moretti. You never did."
Sophia’s breath slowed.
He was right.
But that didn’t mean she was going to admit it.
She reached for her glass, taking a slow sip before setting it down deliberately. "Giovanni wants a meeting. Matteo doesn’t know. That tells me everything I need to know about where this is headed."
Ethan studied her. "And where is it headed?"
Sophia smirked. "Straight to hell."
The next evening, Sophia stepped into Giovanni De Luca’s estate.
It was old money... the kind that didn’t flaunt itself openly but made sure you felt its presence in the bones of the house.
The guards at the entrance barely acknowledged her as she passed through. They already knew who she was.
A butler led her through the dimly lit hallways until they reached a private lounge, where Giovanni was already waiting, seated in a high-backed leather chair, a cigar in one hand, a glass of wine in the other.
Sophia didn’t bother with pleasantries.
"You have my attention," she said smoothly, taking the seat across from him.
Giovanni exhaled a thin stream of smoke, studying her. "I had a feeling you wouldn’t keep me waiting for long."
Sophia crossed her legs. "That depends on what you’re offering."
Giovanni chuckled. "Straight to business. Just like your father."
Sophia’s expression didn’t change. "I’m not my father."
Giovanni’s smile widened. "No. You’re better."
A beat of silence.
Then, he leaned forward, placing his cigar in the ashtray. "I won’t waste your time, Sophia. My son is unfit to lead."
Sophia arched a brow. "And you think I am?"
Giovanni exhaled. "I think Matteo is reckless. He’s blinded by ego, by his desire to prove himself. But you? You see the bigger picture. You understand that this war... this endless battle for dominance... is nothing but a game of strategy."
Sophia smirked. "And you believe I play it better than Matteo?"
Giovanni’s gaze was steady. "I know you do."
A slow pause.
Sophia exhaled. "And what do you expect in return?"
Giovanni tilted his head. "Loyalty."
Sophia chuckled. "You assume I have any to give."
Giovanni’s lips curved. "No, Sophia. I assume you can be convinced."
Silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken meaning.
Then... Sophia stood.
"If I decide to take this offer, Matteo won’t take it lightly," she said coolly.
Giovanni smirked. "Then make sure you strike before he does."
Sophia studied him for a moment longer.
Then... without another word... she turned and walked out.
By the time she returned to the Moretti mansion, Ethan was already waiting for her.
He was seated in the lounge, a drink in hand, his expression unreadable as she entered.
"How was your meeting?" he asked casually.
Sophia poured herself a glass of whiskey before answering. "Interesting."
Ethan leaned back slightly. "He offered you the De Luca empire, didn’t he?"
Sophia sipped her drink, her gaze unreadable.
"Yes," she admitted finally.
Ethan exhaled, setting his glass down. "And?"
Sophia smirked. "I haven’t decided yet."
Ethan studied her for a long moment. Then... he stood, stepping closer.
"You’re lying," he murmured.
Sophia didn’t blink. "Am I?"
Ethan’s gaze flickered to her lips, then back to her eyes. "You already know what you’re going to do."
Sophia tilted her head. "And what do you think that is?"
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
Then... he reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded note.
Sophia arched a brow as he handed it to her. "What’s this?"
Ethan’s voice was low. "A warning."
Sophia unfolded the paper, scanning the short message written in Matteo’s familiar handwriting.
*"I know what you’re planning. Don’t make me stop you."*
A slow exhale left Sophia’s lips.
She folded the note, set it down on the table, and reached for her drink.
Then... she smirked.
"Let’s see who makes the first move."
Ethan’s eyes darkened. "This isn’t a game, Sophia."
She exhaled slowly. "It never was."
The fire crackled behind them, casting long shadows across the room.
And for the first time, Sophia knew... the next choice she made would define the future of everything.
One wrong step, and everything would burn.
Sophia Moretti had never been afraid of making decisions.
She had built her empire on choices that others wouldn’t dare to make.... calculated, ruthless, and always in her favor.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, she wasn’t just making a move... she was deciding the future of two of the most powerful mafia families in Italy.
Giovanni had handed her an opportunity wrapped in betrayal, sealed with the promise of absolute power. Take control of the De Luca empire, and Matteo would be left with nothing.
A clean break.
A permanent victory.
But the weight of it sat in her chest, pressing down harder than she wanted to admit.
She poured herself another drink, the amber liquid swirling in the glass as she turned Giovanni’s words over in her mind.
*"Make sure you strike before he does."*
The problem was... Matteo knew.
The note Ethan had given her had proven that much.
*"I know what you’re planning. Don’t make me stop you."*
It wasn’t a threat.
It was a warning.
A flicker of respect, maybe even understanding. Matteo had always known how to play the game, but he had never expected her to be the one to win it.
A knock at the door.
Sharp. Measured.
Sophia exhaled, setting her glass down. "Come in."
The door opened, and Ethan stepped inside.
His presence felt different tonight... calmer, but heavier, as if he had already decided something she wasn’t yet aware of.
Sophia arched a brow. "You’re still awake."
Ethan smirked. "So are you."
She exhaled. "Something on your mind?"
Ethan studied her for a moment, then stepped closer, resting his hands against the desk.
"You already made your decision, didn’t you?"
Sophia didn’t answer right away.
Instead, she tilted her head, considering him. "If I had, would it change anything?"
Ethan’s jaw tightened slightly. "It would change everything."
Sophia leaned back, arms crossing. "And what if I told you I was going to accept Giovanni’s offer?"
Ethan exhaled sharply. "Then I’d tell you Matteo isn’t going to let you take it."
Sophia smirked. "You think I can’t handle him?"
Ethan’s voice was lower when he spoke. "I think Matteo would rather destroy everything than let you win."
Silence.
Then... Sophia stood, stepping around the desk until she was standing right in front of him.
"Tell me, Ethan," she murmured. "Whose side are you really on?"
Ethan exhaled, tilting his head slightly. "I’m on yours, Sophia."
Sophia searched his face, looking for any sign of a lie.
She found none.
But there was something else in his gaze... something deeper, something dangerous.
Something that made her wonder if he was starting to believe that he had a stake in her beyond business.
And that?
That was dangerous for both of them.
Sophia’s voice softened slightly. "Then trust me."
Ethan exhaled. "I do."
But the tension between them didn’t ease.
It only grew stronger.
The next night, Matteo made his move.
Sophia had been expecting it.
She had played this game for too long not to know that Matteo wasn’t the type to sit and wait for his fate to be decided.
But she hadn’t expected him to show up at her estate.
Not like this.
She was in her office when Marco entered, looking sharper than usual.
"Matteo’s here," he said. "And he’s alone."
Sophia set her glass down. "Interesting."
Marco nodded. "He said he wants to talk."
Sophia smirked. "That’s what they always say before they pull a gun."
Marco arched a brow. "Want me to kill him?"
Sophia chuckled. "Tempting. But no."
Marco hesitated. "You sure about that?"
Sophia exhaled. "Let him in."
Marco gave her one last look before nodding. "Your funeral."
Matteo entered like he owned the place.
It was always his greatest flaw... his belief that the world belonged to him, simply because he was born into it.
Sophia watched him as he took a seat across from her, completely at ease.
"You don’t usually come unarmed," she said, pouring herself another drink.
Matteo smirked. "I didn’t say I was unarmed."
Sophia exhaled. "What do you want, Matteo?"
Matteo leaned forward. "I want to make you an offer."
Sophia arched a brow. "I already have an offer from your father."
Matteo’s smirk faded slightly. "And you trust him?"
Sophia studied him. "No. But I don’t trust you either."
Matteo exhaled, shaking his head. "Then let me make it simple for you, amore."
Sophia tilted her head slightly.
Matteo’s voice lowered. "Marry me."
The words hit harder than a gunshot.
Sophia stilled. "Excuse me?"
Matteo’s smirk returned. "You heard me. Marry me, and we take both empires for ourselves."
Sophia scoffed, shaking her head. "You’re serious."
Matteo exhaled. "Deadly."
Sophia leaned back. "Why?"
Matteo’s smirk faltered. "Because if you take my father’s deal, I’ll be forced to destroy everything. And that means you lose, too."
Sophia exhaled. "So this is self-preservation?"
Matteo chuckled. "Call it whatever you want."
Sophia studied him. "And what if I say no?"
Matteo’s voice dropped lower. "Then you and I will become enemies, Sophia. And we both know that won’t end well for either of us."
Silence.
Then... Sophia smirked.
"You assume I’d say yes."
Matteo’s gaze was unreadable. "I assume you’ll make the right choice."
Sophia exhaled. "Give me time to consider it."
Matteo’s lips curled. "Don’t take too long, amore. The world moves fast, and so do enemies."
Then... he stood, adjusting his suit.
Sophia watched him leave, her mind already racing.
The game had changed again.
And now?
She had two kings vying for the throne.
But the real question was... which one did she want to rule beside?
Or...
Did she want to take the empire for herself?
Sophia smirked.
This was going to be fun.
That night, Sophia sat alone in her study, staring at two envelopes.
One was from Giovanni, offering her the De Luca empire.
The other?
A small velvet box.
Sophia opened it, revealing a diamond ring.
No note.
No message.
But she didn’t need one.
Matteo’s proposal had been made.
Now, she had to decide:
Take the De Luca empire by force?
Or marry the man who would burn it all down just to keep her?
She smirked, pouring herself a drink.
Decisions, decisions.
