The Cost of Loyalty

Power was a fragile thing. It could be held, wielded, even feared, but never truly owned.

Sophia Moretti had spent her life learning this lesson the hard way.

Her empire was built on control, deception, and the quiet understanding that everyone had a price.

Tonight, as she sat in the dim glow of her study, she was counting the cost of Giovanni De Luca’s hesitation.

She had spent years shaping the Moretti empire into an untouchable force, only for Matteo De Luca to walk in and remind her that some debts... some promises... refused to stay buried.

His father had listened to her. That much was certain.

Giovanni had given her his time, his attention, and... more importantly... his doubt.

He had not outright betrayed Matteo, but his hesitation alone was a crack in the foundation of the De Luca family.

And Sophia knew exactly how to use cracks.

She swirled the whiskey in her glass, the amber liquid reflecting the candlelight.

She had set something in motion.

And now?

She had to decide how far she was willing to go to see it through.

A sharp knock interrupted her thoughts.

She didn’t need to ask who it was.

"Come in," she called.

The door swung open, and Ethan Cross stepped inside.

Sophia exhaled, half in amusement, half in something else... something heavier.

"You always show up when I’m thinking," she murmured.

Ethan smirked, closing the door behind him. "That’s because you always think too much."

He moved toward the bar, pouring himself a drink without asking.

That, more than anything, told her he wasn’t here as an outsider.

Sophia watched him for a moment, allowing the silence to stretch between them.

Then she leaned back in her chair. "You disapprove."

Ethan glanced at her. "Of what?"

"Of my meeting with Giovanni."

Ethan took a slow sip of whiskey. "No," he said finally. "I disapprove of you enjoying it."

Sophia arched a brow. "Enjoying what?"

Ethan smirked. "The game. The power shift. Giovanni listening to you and Matteo not even knowing it happened." He tilted his glass slightly. "You liked that, didn’t you?"

Sophia didn’t deny it. "I like control."

Ethan chuckled. "I noticed."

Sophia tapped a single finger against the rim of her glass. "You think I made a mistake."

Ethan studied her. "I think you moved the right piece, but I don’t think you’ve thought about what happens if Matteo finds out."

Sophia exhaled. "Matteo is reckless. His father knows that. If Giovanni chooses power over family, it will be because Matteo gave him no choice."

Ethan leaned back against the desk, watching her. "And if you’re wrong?"

Sophia met his gaze, unflinching. "Then I’ll make sure I’m not."

The room shifted.

Something heavy settled in the space between them.

Ethan smirked, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. "You love this, don’t you?"

Sophia took a slow sip of whiskey. "Power?"

Ethan leaned in slightly. "Winning."

Their eyes locked.

The tension between them wasn’t new.

But it was worse tonight.

More volatile. More charged.

Then a knock at the door.

Sophia exhaled.

Marco.

"Come in," she called.

The door swung open, and Marco’s expression was unreadable.

"Matteo is here," he said. "Waiting for you in the east wing study."

Sophia set her glass down.

Ethan’s smirk vanished.

She stood, smoothing out her black silk blouse.

"Tell him I’ll be there shortly," she said.

Marco nodded and left.

Sophia turned to Ethan, holding his gaze a second too long.

Then she left.

Matteo De Luca was waiting for her like he owned the room.

He lounged in the leather chair near the fireplace, his posture relaxed, his confidence an art form.

Sophia knew the act. She had seen it before.

She closed the door behind her, keeping her expression neutral.

"Matteo."

Matteo smiled. "Sophia."

She moved to the bar, pouring herself another drink.

"You’re upset," she said, her tone almost amused.

Matteo chuckled. "That depends."

Sophia tilted her head. "On?"

Matteo’s smirk was slow, deliberate. "On whether or not my father is still loyal to me."

Sophia took a slow sip of whiskey. "Is that why you’re here? To ask me that?"

Matteo exhaled. "No. I’m here to remind you of something."

Sophia arched a brow. "And what’s that?"

Matteo stood, crossing the space between them in measured steps.

Then he reached out... and brushed his fingers along the inside of her wrist.

Not a grip. Not a demand.

A test.

Sophia didn’t move.

Didn’t flinch.

And then, Matteo did something unexpected.

He leaned in, his breath warm against her ear.

"I don’t mind playing your game, Sophia," he murmured.

She stayed still. "Good. Because you’ve already lost."

Matteo chuckled, pulling back slightly. "You sure about that?"

Sophia’s eyes flickered to his hand on her wrist.

Then she smirked... and twisted her arm just slightly.

Enough that his grip loosened.

Enough that she was in control again.

"I’m always sure," she murmured.

Matteo’s smirk faltered.

Then he stepped back.

The message was clear.

She had won this round.

But the game?

The game wasn’t over.

When Sophia returned to her study, Ethan was still there.

Waiting.

His expression shifted the second he saw her.

She closed the door behind her.

Ethan exhaled. "How did it go?"

Sophia smirked, but it didn’t reach her eyes. "Exactly how I expected."

Ethan studied her. "What did he say?"

Sophia took a step closer. "That he thinks I still belong to him."

Ethan’s jaw ticked. "And what did you say?"

She tilted her head. "That he’s a fool."

Ethan’s hand caught her wrist. "And yet, you let him touch you."

Sophia’s pulse pounded. "Does it matter?"

Ethan didn’t respond.

He just pulled her against him.

And this time...when he kissed her..

It was not a question.

It was a claim.

Sophia hadn’t moved since Ethan kissed her.

The fire in the study crackled, casting flickering shadows across the room, but neither of them acknowledged it. The air was thick, charged with an unspoken war.

Ethan’s lips had barely left hers, yet his presence was still imprinted on her skin.

He was waiting... for her to push him away, for her to tell him this was a mistake.

But she didn’t.

Instead, she studied him, emerald eyes cool and unreadable.

"You think you can stake a claim?" she finally said, voice softer than she intended.

Ethan smirked, though his grip on her wrist remained firm. "I don’t think, Sophia. I know."

Her pulse skipped... a betrayal she refused to acknowledge.

"Is that so?"

Ethan leaned in slightly, his breath warm against her cheek. "You don’t let men touch you unless you want them to."

Sophia tilted her head, gaze never wavering. "And yet, you let your jealousy slip in front of Matteo."

Ethan’s jaw tightened. "That wasn’t jealousy."

Sophia’s lips curled. "No?"

Ethan exhaled sharply, stepping back. "He wants you." His voice was flat, matter-of-fact. "Not just your empire... you."

Sophia took a slow sip of whiskey, unbothered. "Matteo wants control."

Ethan shook his head. "And you think he won’t take it if you give him the chance?"

Sophia’s smirk was sharp. "I don’t give chances, Ethan. I create them."

The words hung between them, heavy with meaning.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then, Ethan set his glass down with deliberate slowness.

"You’re playing a dangerous game, Moretti."

Sophia arched a brow. "I always win, Cross."

Ethan’s smirk returned, but it was different this time... darker.

"We’ll see," he murmured before turning to leave.

Sophia watched him go, her fingers still tingling from where he had touched her.

She would never admit it out loud, but tonight, she had almost lost control.

And for a woman like her, that was unacceptable.

Sophia had barely returned to her suite when her phone buzzed.

Matteo.

She considered ignoring it. Then, with a sigh, she answered.

"I was beginning to think you were avoiding me, amore," Matteo’s voice was smooth, controlled.

Sophia rolled her eyes. "I just saw you an hour ago."

Matteo chuckled. "And yet, you’re still thinking about me."

Sophia smirked. "Not quite."

A pause.

Then... "My father had dinner with a certain senator tonight. Do you know what they discussed?"

Sophia’s grip on her phone tightened slightly. Politics. Alliances. Power.

"I assume you’re going to tell me," she said, voice measured.

Matteo exhaled. "They discussed you."

Sophia’s pulse quickened. "And?"

"And my father is considering something... unexpected."

Sophia leaned against her desk, fingers tapping against the wood. "What exactly is he considering?"

Matteo’s voice dropped lower. "Handing over the De Luca empire to someone more... capable."

A beat of silence.

Sophia smiled. "And you assume that means me?"

Matteo chuckled darkly. "I assume you want it."

Sophia exhaled. "And you assume I don’t already have enough empires to run?"

Matteo’s voice was smooth. "You don’t turn down power, Sophia. I know you."

She smirked. "You knew me."

Another pause.

Then... "I have one warning for you, amore."

Sophia didn’t blink. "Let’s hear it."

Matteo’s voice lost its usual amusement. "If my father betrays me, there won’t be a De Luca family left for you to claim."

A slow exhale left Sophia’s lips.

Matteo was many things... reckless, arrogant, a danger to himself. But he wasn’t stupid.

If Giovanni turned on him, Matteo wouldn’t hesitate to burn his own family to the ground.

"I suppose we’ll see what he chooses, then," Sophia said smoothly.

Matteo chuckled softly. "We will."

And then the line went dead.

Sophia set her phone down, her mind already racing.

This game had just changed.

And she was about to make sure she was the one who dictated the next move.

The next morning, Ethan found Sophia in her private office.

He didn’t knock. He rarely did

She glanced up as he entered, expression unreadable. "Something on your mind, Cross?"

Ethan exhaled. "Matteo called you last night."

Sophia smirked. "Were you listening in?"

Ethan didn’t answer. He simply watched her.

Sophia sighed. "He was warning me."

"About what?"

Sophia leaned back in her chair. "His father might choose me over him."

Ethan was quiet for a long moment. Then... "And what do you want, Sophia?"

She tilted her head. "Why does that matter?"

Ethan took a step closer. "Because if you’re planning to take control of the De Luca family, you need to be ready for what comes next."

Sophia exhaled. "You think I’m not?"

Ethan smirked. "I think Matteo is more dangerous when he has nothing left to lose."

Sophia studied him, then stood, walking to where he stood.

"Are you warning me, Cross?"

Ethan’s gaze flickered to her lips. "I’m reminding you that I don’t like being blindsided."

Sophia smiled. "Then stay on my side."

Ethan exhaled. "I’m on your side, Moretti."

She tilted her head. "For now."

Ethan chuckled. "For now."

Another unspoken battle raged in the silence between them.

And Sophia knew... this wasn’t just about the De Luca empire anymore.

It was about her.

And whether or not Ethan Cross was willing to risk everything for her.

That evening, a sealed envelope was delivered to Sophia’s study.

She broke the wax seal carefully, unfolding the thick paper.

A single line was written in Giovanni De Luca’s precise handwriting:

"We should meet. Matteo doesn’t need to know."

Sophia smiled, a slow, knowing smirk.

The cracks were turning into fractures.

And fractures?

Fractures led to downfalls.

She folded the letter and poured herself a drink.

This time, when her phone buzzed again, she already knew who it was.

She answered without hesitation.

"Matteo," she purred.

And she knew, before he even spoke, that tonight would be the night she chose sides.
