Chapter 29—Sebastian
I had wanted to spend the whole two weeks in the room. But I drew the curtains, grabbed my clothes and left. She was calling after me, screaming my name. I couldn’t believe that she had been so selfish. All this time she had been keeping it quiet, because she was thinking of getting rid of it.
This was our first official fight and I hated myself for behaving this way. After all, a woman has rights too, but what about the guys? I had millions in the bank. I could have hired someone to look after the baby if she wanted to go to work. So be it. I had never thought about being a dad until now, but the whole idea that I could potentially have been one and never known about it, made me fucking angry.
“Don’t go.”
I ignored her plea. I opened the door and left. I couldn’t talk when I was angry; all the things would come out the wrong way. The best thing to do was to be on my own. I felt as if I was going to explode.
I didn’t make it far before she was behind me. I had just reached the steps of the hotel, which led on to the beach. She quickly put on her shades and grabbed my hand. I looked up and that was when I saw tears streaming down her face. I didn’t mean to make her cry. I just felt angry, wound up that she was going to do this and not talk to me about it. That was the part that hurt the most.
“I left my shoes upstairs. We could go for a walk.” Her voice was trembling. She was holding my hand tightly, as if she was worried that I would let go.
I took off my shoes, flung them to the side. I should have taken them with me, but I couldn’t be bothered and right on cue one of the staff asked if he could hold on to them for me until I returned. I nodded; this place had their service to the teeth. As we walked I saw some couples messing around on the beach. I sighed for a minute, thinking that had been Emma and me only an hour ago.
“So, do you think I’ll leave you if you have our baby?”
She may have thought that I was emotionally blackmailing her. But I wasn’t. This decision involved the both of us. Not just her. Sure it was her body, but what about me? I wanted her to know that this affected me too.
“No.”
We kept walking and I thought about lifting her up and just changing the atmosphere between us so that it wasn’t so serious, but I really didn’t feel like trying to make her feel better, until I knew exactly what was on her mind.
“We just seem to be moving so fast.” She slumped down in the sand. “One minute we’re debating to be a couple or not...”
“You did, not me. I never had a doubt in my mind.”
She took off her sunglasses. “Really?”
I nodded. “You don’t get it. You didn’t back then in Vegas and now, I feel like you still don’t get it.
“I love you from way back then. When I was a stuffy little teenager, with too much acne and no one wanted to be my friend, to when I was the teen that decided he was going to make a go of football and make it my life.” I took off my sunglasses.
“I loved when you would come and watch me play, and when you went away, not only was Sophia sad, but I was too. Then, when you came back into my life….” I took a deep breath. “…I thought. Thank God. You know, like I’ve been given a second chance. So, this quickness you talk about…” I moved my hands up and down, then sighed. “I just don’t get it. For me, it’s been nearly a lifetime. I never thought I would be able to hold you in my arms. I never thought you would let me.”
She moved on top of me, sat in my lap and said, “I get it now. I’m silly, right?”
“And selfish?”
She poked me. “I gave up my job for you.”
I shook my head. “I thought you did that for us. To give us a chance.”
“I suppose. And the baby?”
“Our baby.”
She nodded. “Our baby. We’re doing this?”
She looked so cute as she raised an eyebrow and smiled. I realized now that she was scared not only about us, but also the responsibility. In time we would both overcome our fears as long as we worked together.
“You betcha!”
I hugged her so tight. I could tell that people were watching but I didn’t care. I was going to have a baby with the one girl that I had always loved and I didn’t care if they threw us off the beach as I kissed her and she hugged me and started to sob in my ear.
“I hope they’re tears of joy?”
I opened up her arms and she sighed, “You betcha!”
We had a long journey to go through. I had watched my parents have their ups and downs. I knew that we would have that too. But the key to happiness was talking and I was going to make sure that I kept my door open and not shut her out. And in time she would have to do the same, too. I could tell that talking about the baby was a big step for her, but it was just the beginning of a beautiful relationship for us.
