Chapter 39 ....

Chapter 39 ....
Ethan 's pov.

It's been hours since school closed for the day and Selene isn't back home yet.

She doesn't partake in any extracurricular lessons, nor does she engage in after-school sports, so where the hell is she?.

I decided not to overreact, besides it's perfectly normal to be late from school on some days.

I usually return late even when there is no practice after school. Just for the fun of it.

What bothers me is that Selene isn't that type of girl. She was always the first to race out of the class at the end of school, except when she was helping a teacher or principal Bradshaw with some school work.

That might be the case, she could be occupied. Here I was breaking a sweat over her delayed absence

I busied myself, reading through the topics taught in biology this semester before I got suspended.

I can't wait for her to start drilling me with questions, she'd be stunned. I can already imagine her face.

I got tired of reading. I don't usually study, so it was a lot for me to read for hours on end. It keeps me from thinking about Selene.

My eyes went out the window, the sun was already turning a pale orange.

Whatever it was, I at least needed to find out for my peace of mind.

I was already speed dialing her number, then I stopped.

What will she think of me if I call her now? No, I'm just going to wait for a few more minutes.

A few minutes felt like hours when I heard a sound at my door. I rushed over to open it.

I already made a straight face, so she does not think I was expecting her.

"What do you want?" I growled at the maid, and she raised my hopes by knocking. It better be good.

"There's a young man downstairs, who says he's a friend."

Friend? I wasn't expecting anybody.

"I'll be down soon."

I slammed the door in her face. Where the hell could Selene be?.

I hurriedly typed a message on my phone.

"Where are you? Call me when you get this text."

I sent it to her number and it was delivered, hopefully she sees it soon.

I opened the door to go meet my uninvited guests.

Since I got suspended, I haven't received a text or a single call from anyone at Brooklyn High.

So it got me wondering.

"Hey Ethan , what's up?" Isaiah greeted.

He hugged me and gave me a slap on the back.

I should have guessed it was him.

I didn't hide my displeasure at seeing his face, not after he turned his back on me in the locker room with the others.

"I didn't invite you to my house," I said hotly.

Isaiah sat down, not feeling the least insulted.

"I came to see how you are doing."

I sat down adjacent to him and crossed my legs.

"As you can see, I'm doing great, no thanks to you and the other players."

It still hurts me what they did, and I can't hide it.

"Look, man, I'm sorry I couldn't stand up for you the other day, but the coach was hell bent on having you suspended; it was either that or you get removed as captain, so we voted for you to get benched."

"Hold on a second, you guys voted on it?" That came as a shocker to me.

Isaiah licked his lips before answering.

"Yeah we did, it was the best call, I'm sorry."

There's more that he's not telling me. I can feel it.

"I know you have more to say, just spill it, nothing
can be worse than getting suspended and benched."

He rubbed his hands together, unsure if he should speak or not.

"Isaiah, it's either you talk or get the hell out of my house." I already lost my patience.

"Whoa, chill a bit. I'm just thinking, it wouldn't have happened if you hadn't fought with Vale. Everybody knows you're jealous and insecure about the new guy."

Pftt, what? He's got to be joking.

"Jealous of who? Vale? Please, cut me some slack here. He's a bit of a legend, do what?, I'm still better than him at hockey."

"Coach doesn't think so, more reason I came over, talk to your dad. He should have spoken to Bradshaw to let you back in school. I won't lie, the longer you stay at home, the higher chances of the coach making Vale the captain."

"No." My voice cracked.

Coach can't do that to me, not after everything I've done for the team.

He's seen someone new to replace me, that's why he wasn't bothered about my suspension.

"Thanks for the heads up, I'll speak to my dad" I shook Isaiah's hand.

It will be best not to let him see how affected I am about it.

I just hope Dad reasons with me on this one; he's never been so pissed at me like this before.

One other thing.

"Erm, Isaiah, did you by any chance see Selene in school today? Her mom's kind of worried, it's quite unlike her to be this late from school."

"Ohhh, funny thing though, I saw her and Vale at the movies when coming over here. I'm telling you, those two, something is going on between them. You should see the way they are together in school."

So, that's why she's late. She went on a date with Vale.

It churned my stomach to know that I was worried about her, and she was out having fun with the one guy that's trying to steal my position as captain of the hockey team.

I stayed in the living room even after Isaiah left. It was past ten before Selene walked through the doors of the house, holding a gift bag.

Probably something he got for her on their date.

She was smiling from ear to ear as she walked in, unaware of my presence.

"What's in the bag?"
