Chapter 6. When the jerk made her blush.
She shifted in her seat when those jade orbs continued to bore a hole into the side of her head.
"What do you want?"
He didn't respond but only scooted closer then placed his hands under his chin.
With eyebrows drawn together, she returned his gaze which irked the living light out of her. "What?"
He grinned and Adana's expression lost some of it's heat. "I'm only interested in knowing my neighbor," he explained, that grin still in place. "I'm Storm and you're the nameless angry and hot as hell girl beside me."
When he chose a chair at the back of the class, Adana hadn't taken note of where exactly he chose. She was just glad to continue the class. Now, she wished she had paid more attention.
"Shut up and pay attention," she pushed out through gritted teeth. "And one last thing. Leave me alone."
Storm opened his mouth to give a cheeky reply but Mrs. Limpet beat him to it. "Mr. Richards and Ms Spindly, care to share the contents of your conversation with the class?"
Adana's palm connected with her face which had increased in temperature. "Nothing," she rushed out. "Nothing at all ma'am."
A mischievous smirk graced Storm's features, no doubt enjoying the flustered state of the girl beside him. "Actually, I don't mind sharing the contents of our conversation with the class."
Mrs. Limpet's razor sharp gaze switched it's focus to him and Adana could've sworn she had whiplash when she also snapped her eyes away from the teacher to give him a open mouthed shocked expression.
"Don't keep us in the dark," the teacher's eyes shone with sarcastic curiosity. "We're dying to know. Do tell."
Reveling in the undivided attention if the class, Storm cleared his throat causing silent snickers to erupt from the class.
"I'll have you know I just wanted to meet this delicious specimen beside me but she was not nice."
For the first time ever, Adana thanked the seven heavens for her skin because if she was a few shades lighter, she would definitely be the perfect twin of a tomato.
Storm took note of the slightest hint of rosiness splashed on her face and chuckled, enjoying seeing the results of his actions on her.
"That's enough now," the teacher's beyond angry voice caused the class to turn pin drop silent. They knew that tone all too well. She was either going to give them a really difficult project or hand out detention. "Just get back to your notes."
The class joined Adana in releasing a relived sigh and she tuned out the presence if the boy beside her for the rest of the class.
"A-and she called my hair hideous." Leilani was on the verge of spilling up a river while she narrated her horrible first experience with 'three spice girls' as they were popularly known by. A group which consisted of Sasha, the school bimbo and walking STD transmitor and her 'pack'.
Adana tsked before reaching into her pocket to hand Leilani the wad of tissue paper she kept just in case.
The light buzz and toxic environment of the school cafeteria was not a place to shed tears but she wasn't going to tell Leilani about that little detail right now seeing as she wasn't in a state for that irrelevant piece of information.
Leilani blew into the tissue in an unladylike manner but Adana wasn't complaining. Instead, she listened to all the horrible things Sasha had said to her.
After a few seconds of silence and audible sniffs from Leilani, she spoke,"please don't allow Sasha to get to you."
"I'll try," her voice was barely there but since their table only consisted of the two of them, Adana heard her clearly. "It's just so unfair and on my first day at that. Freaking fools didn't let me breath."
In the heat of their conversation, they didn't notice the girl who stood just behind Leilani with her tray tightly clasped in knotty hands.
"Can I sit with you guys?" A thick accent accentuated her speech. "It's just that I'm new here and I think you girls are new too."
When she didn't receive a reply from a sniffing Leilani and a blank faced Adana, she lowered her head. "I-it's okay if I'm not allowed here at this table," she stuttered. "I'll just find somewhere else to—"
"Nonsense," Adana's outburst made the girl halt midway through her first step. "We didn't say you couldn't sit here. You're more than welcome."
The girl's shoulders sagged and a smile lightened her face when she said, "thank you. I promise I won't make you regret letting me sit with you."
Adana let out a low chuckle. "Feel free to be yourself around us uh..."
"Ronnie-Anne, " she offered. "You can call me Ronnie."
With her eyes and cheeks rid of their earlier salty liquid, Leilani bared her teeth in a wide toothy smile. "I'm Leilani and she's Adana."
It didn't take long for them to get along and learn that Ronnie was actually part African and part Mexican with a very large family. At times like those, Adana would envy her friends and their large families.
She didn't want a large family but a family she would be proud to speak of. She wouldn't even mind if she had just her mother but with the current situation at home, she wasn't so sure.
"Yo, pretty girl!"
Adana stilled in main hallway when his voice sliced through the heavy buzz of conversations in the hallway. The buzz refused significantly but she refused to even look at him. Not after the stunt he pulled during first period.
He caught up with her in no time and for the first time in her life, she cursed her genes. "Hey pretty," he beamed at her but she didn't see when she was so focused on avoiding him. "I never got your name."
She stopped abruptly and turned to him with a faux pleased expression, her peachy lips curled up. "I'm Adana and you're a jerk," she paused. "Now leave."
While she rushed into the nearest classroom which also happened to be her next lecture, Storm couldn't help but ogle at her full and well rounded rear end.
How doesn't she see how beautiful she is? Were his thoughts when she turned and disappeared down the hall.
