Chapter 50 You Really Like Being Betrayed
Chapter 50 You Really Like Being Betrayed
His cold, hard gaze swept across the faces of everyone below the stage.
When he saw Daniel, he paused for barely a second, then withdrew his gaze. His voice was low and deep. "Keep quiet."
The previously chaotic crowd fell silent after just one sentence.
"Marcus!" Evelyn's breathing became uneven. She couldn't maintain any pretense on her face—only panic remained.
She had no idea when Marcus had returned, or how much he'd heard!
Marcus's gaze was indifferent and distant as it lightly swept over Evelyn's face, showing no reaction.
Emma was also waiting to watch this drama unfold. Things had come to this point—the truth was right in front of them. How would Evelyn get out of this?
The whispers started up again around Evelyn's ears.
She forced a smile, her pleading gaze falling on Marcus as she took the initiative to step down from the stage. But her legs went weak, and she nearly fell to the ground.
Marcus reached out and caught her, pulling her into his arms.
This scene was captured by countless cameras.
Standing to the side, Emma saw clearly how Marcus protected Evelyn.
Her fingers curled slightly as she ignored the sadness welling up inside her and continued watching Evelyn's performance.
"Marcus, why did you come back?" Evelyn's voice trembled, her words broken and incomplete.
She struggled to force out a smile, her voice shaking with nervousness.
Marcus had already been suspicious of her.
Now Emma had directly exposed those videos. What was she supposed to do? Was she really going to be finished today?
"I came back to support you." Marcus's voice wasn't loud, but it carried through the microphone to everyone's ears.
Evelyn immediately felt relieved, unable to control the upward curve of her lips.
In front of all the cameras, she threw herself directly into Marcus's arms. "Thank goodness you're here, Marcus. When you weren't around, everyone bullied me, especially Emma! She's not just spreading rumors—she tried to hurt our child. That big screen behind us shows the fake evidence she created!"
"Is that so?" Marcus's face was expressionless, his voice cold, each word full of pressure.
"The child in Evelyn's belly is mine. As for the damage to Emma's studio, it was caused by Evelyn's unstable emotions during pregnancy. I'm willing to compensate for everything. No further comment. If any negative news gets out, the Donovan Group's legal department will pursue it permanently!"
This was Marcus's blatant threat—if any negative news leaked out, the Donovan Group's undefeated legal team would take action.
Emma stood there as a dull pain slowly spread through her heart.
Marcus, protecting Evelyn in his arms, was about to leave.
From start to finish, he hadn't looked at Emma once.
"Wait, Mr. Donovan. Don't you owe me an explanation? Evelyn framed me and almost ruined my reputation."
Emma reached out to stop them both. She really couldn't understand—did Marcus have a split personality? How could he ask her to get back together on one hand, while continuing to be lovey-dovey with Evelyn on the other, protecting her in every way and completely disregarding Emma?
Marcus looked at her with bone-chilling coldness, completely devoid of his previous affection.
"Emma, sign this contract, and we'll consider today's matter closed."
Marcus nodded to Tyler, who had been waiting nearby.
Tyler respectfully presented an agreement. "Ms. Patterson, the contract is ready. As soon as you sign it, it will take effect immediately. We formally invite your team to be the Donovan Group's chief design team."
Emma's eyes scanned the contract—this was exactly the Eastern District project commission they'd been waiting for, which had been delayed for so long!
With this, no matter how much those shareholders objected, it would be useless.
After silently reviewing the contract contents, Emma suddenly smiled.
"Mr. Donovan is so generous—willing to give us a contract with such a high profit-sharing ratio for his fiancée's sake. Even the design fees have doubled."
"Are you satisfied?" Marcus raised an eyebrow.
"Of course I'm satisfied. Marcus, since you've given me such a big gift, I should give you one too."
Emma was like a fully drawn bowstring, stretched tight. "Mr. Donovan, are you willing to accept the invitation?"
"Tyler, watch Evelyn for me."
Marcus then took the initiative to follow Emma into a nearby conference room.
Emma studied him. Based on her understanding of Marcus, he should have already guessed the truth.
But why was Marcus still protecting Evelyn?
"Marcus, aren't you curious about the child in Evelyn's belly?"
Marcus glanced at Evelyn in the distance and concealed all emotion in his eyes. "What are you trying to say?"
Emma pulled out her phone and held it in front of him, starting to play the footage from that day.
As two figures appeared on the screen, Marcus's deep brows shot up, and even his jawline tensed.
"Enough!"
Emma's phone was snatched away.
Marcus's slender fingers tapped the screen a few times, then threw it back.
"I don't need to see it."
Emma discovered that the video had been completely deleted—it wasn't even in the recycle bin.
Her face darkened as she bit out sarcastically, "I didn't realize Mr. Donovan had a thing for being cheated on. Or is it that Mr. Donovan doesn't want to admit the person in there is your fiancée?"
"I'm neither blind nor deaf."
Marcus turned around, his powerful presence instantly overwhelming.
He braced one hand against the wall beside Emma, trapping her within his space.
At an angle others couldn't see, Marcus leaned down slightly and said in a low voice, "Emma, I know the child isn't mine. I have some other plans right now."
Emma cut him off directly. "You know? Mr. Donovan is truly selflessly loving. In that case, I won't disturb you."
He was protecting her even knowing Evelyn had betrayed him—did he really enjoy being cheated on that much?
Emma let out a mocking laugh and turned to leave.
Watching Emma's departing figure, Marcus felt his insides churning. Every cell in his body was screaming for Emma to stay.
Because he had moved against Mabel, she had actually joined forces with outsiders to suppress him.
Marcus could only push Evelyn to the front, making her the target for his enemies' concentrated fire.
Now wasn't the time to expose this matter. It might be better for Emma to stay away from him.
Marcus's reason ultimately overcame his emotions—just barely.
He was this close to throwing caution to the wind and chasing after Emma.
