Chapter 122 Already Quit
BELLA'S POV
I was dressed up in a normal shirt and jeans. It had been practically a week since I had started working at Quinn's Med. Everything had been going well so far, and Daniel was more than sweet in the first few days. Then I noticed that he was barely around. Or maybe he just didn't want to see me.
The thing was that I didn't have an issue cleaning up his office twenty times a day if I had to. Considering the fact that I didn't even do as many dishes at home, it was a slight upgrade.
“Aren't you going to work today?” I asked my mom, eyeing her as she was sprawled on the couch. She quickly leaned back, letting out a cough that was obviously fake.
“I'm sick,” she said.
“You said this last week as well. If you want to quit your job, then you should just do so.”
“I already quit,” she said, and I frowned. I bit the insides of my cheek as I tried not to lose my cool.
“What are you talking about?” I asked, and she cocked her head to the side as she smiled.
“You heard me. Your salary is a lot. And I've been the one working my ass off ever since. I deserve a rest.”
I mentally punched myself in the gut. I knew that I should have never shown her how much I was actually earning. We were both running better on lies. I was being honest with her for once, and just look how that ended.
“I’m off to work,” I said quickly. I didn't have the time for anything that she was trying to do. She could enjoy sitting down on the couch the whole day. The only benefit that came from something like that, was the fact that dinner was always ready when I got home.
I hated the fact that I had to walk all the way to the office. Affording an Uber wasn't something I could do yet. So I had to leave an hour early and take a quick shower before switching into my janitor uniform.
As I walked in, the familiar smell of mentholated spirit and Dettol hit me. It was something I was getting used to.
Just as I was about to walk past, the second receptionist called out to me. She was the only one that I could actually talk to, without her judging anything.
“Hey, Abby,” I said, pushing my damp hair away from my face. God, I really needed that bath.
“You do know that the CEO would be coming in today, right?” She asked, and I froze.
“What do you mean?” I asked. “Daniel didn't tell me.”
She shrugged. “Well, every other person knew.” There was something about that fact that made me narrow my eyes. What game was Daniel trying to play? If he was actually trying to play any game.
“I should have worn something better. Or done my hair in a better style.”
“You're a janitor. I don't think you need much.”
I eyed her, quickly heading to the bathroom as I stripped my clothes off. I had a quick shower in the stall that was specially for the doctors. It didn't matter. They weren't going to find me here. And the water at the clinic felt cleaner than the water that we had at home.
I didn't even care about towel drying my body. I quickly pulled out my black and white uniform, tying my hair in a ponytail, and applying a little bit of lip gloss.
“Perfect,” I whispered to my reflection in the mirror.
I was more than self-conscious throughout that morning. By the time I walked into Daniel's office to clean, he was going through a few documents. He barely looked up at me.
“Good morning, sir,” I started with a small smile on my face.
“Morning,” he answered without a word more. Wasn't he going to tell me about the CEO coming? He was the same person who said I needed to impress her somehow. How did he expect me to do that without knowing that she was arriving? What if Abby didn't tell me?
“I just got information that the CEO was coming to the office today,” I said, and he didn't even look up from his document.
“Yes,” he said calmly. “She just got back from her trip.”
I never took out the time to Google about who the Quinns were. I just knew that they were popular. I didn't know if I was supposed to be ready to act perfect for some old woman. The thought made me gag slightly.
“You didn't tell me,” I said in a slightly accusing tone.
That suddenly gained his attention. “Are you talking to me?” He asked, and a shudder ran through my spine.
“It just wasn't fair that something like this would happen, and I wouldn't even get the slightest bit of information about it. You were the one who asked me to impress her.”
“Then you impress her. Or have you left a bad impression on her already?” He asked, making me frown. Was there something I didn't know?
“Did I do something?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at him.
He sighed, like he was tired of me. “You're here to clean, Bella. Do your job and leave. I have a lot on my plate.”
I swallowed hard. It had to be a bad day for him. I didn't know why I was even getting soft for him. I was barely nice to anyone. Why was I trying to be nice to this man? It had to be because I wanted to protect my job. It couldn't be anything more.
There was no time for that.
But as I cleaned the office, I was patiently waiting for him to look at me even once. He didn't.
By the time I headed out of the office, I noticed how silent the hallways were. Something was up.
I hurried back to the reception. Abby leaned in.
“She just walked in. You might just want to go and see her.”
“I don't think I want to. That would be too forward.”
She shrugged, like she didn't care what I wanted to do.
My legs were buckling as I walked towards the office where the CEO was staying. There was a bad feeling in my chest.
Just as I raised my hands to knock on the door, it was pushed open from inside.
“Good morni-” I started, and paused immediately. I took a step back. It might have been years, but I recognized her.
Anna.
She was… Anna Quinn?
