Chapter 108 To His Son
JAMES’ POV
“You haven't gotten back to me ever since. I've been sitting here all day. I have better things to do,” I said, trying hard not to raise my voice. I was there to see the owner of Greenlife Med.
I just got the information that the old man was dead. He handed everything over to his son. You would think that the son would let me rest and forget about all the damage that my drug had caused. Nothing of that sort happened.
He had been bombarding me with emails the minute he sat down in his father's chair. The least that young man could do was actually help me. But there I was, sitting down at the reception for the past thirty minutes, and I didn't even get a proper answer from the receptionist.
She cocked an eyebrow at me, as she looked me from head to toe. I couldn't tell if my condition was so clear.
“What's your name again?” She asked in the rudest manner possible. I exhaled sharply. I couldn't display any form of dominance here. Especially since I wanted something from them.
“James Reed,” I said, trying hard not to grit my teeth.
She tapped away on her keyboard like I didn't just speak. “Sorry, Mr. Austin isn't in. Maybe you can come back tomorrow.”
I swallowed hard. “I've been here for the whole day, and you didn't tell me that he wasn't in?”
She shrugged. “You decided to sit down there. What did you expect me to do?”
I didn't bother giving her an answer as I headed outside, getting into my car. I didn't know how much longer I was even going to have my car to myself. I just hoped that I wasn't going to get to the point where I was going to have to sell everything that I had.
The drive home was a blur. By the time I parked in my driveway, I was holding on to my steering wheel so hard that my knuckles had turned white.
I exhaled as I headed inside. I was sure that I was going to see Melissa in the sitting room. She didn't have anywhere to go. The only time she went out in the past was when I gave her my card to shop. Now that we were managing everything, she didn't have anything to shop with, and nothing to show her friends.
How did I not see how useless of a wife she was in the past?
“Did he answer you?” She said, barely looking at me. She was watching a cooking show that she was never going to put to good use.
“He wasn't around,” I muttered, looking around the living room.
“Where's Isabel?” I asked immediately, and she frowned.
“She's upstairs. Packing a few things. She wants to leave. Found a man she wants to stay with.”
I hated how absentminded she was. She was just willing to let Isabel go when she knew how useful she was to us.
I headed upstairs immediately, pushing the door to Isabel's room open. She jumped as soon as she saw me.
“The least you can do is knock when you walk in.” She said in a stiff tone. Where was the Isabel that needed my help? This one had her chin tipped. The same confident look that she had when she was still at the Quinn home.
“This is still my house,” I said.
“And I'm leaving soon.”
“To where?” I asked, blocking her path.
“My ex's house. I was able to get him to accommodate me for the meantime.”
“Weren't you comfortable here?” I asked. “We were going to make sure that you're not lacking a thing.”
Her lips slowly spread into a smile. “That's the issue, James. You can't see that things are actually going downhill for you. And trust me, I won't be here to watch your downfall. I have better things to do. Now, if you'll excuse me.”
“You can't just leave!” I said, raising my voice. “Have you forgotten our little agreement? We were supposed to help each other.”
“Since I'll be moving in with the new CEO of Greenlife Med, I think I can do anything I want.” There was a smirk plastered on her face as she spoke.
I took a step back immediately. “What are you talking about?”
I knew that she had an eye for rich people. And her circle was the same. But nothing could have prepared me for the fact that she was once entangled with the person who held my fate in his hands.
“You heard right. I'll be moving in with Austin. So please, send me the details of your company. I'll see if I'll be able to push things under the rug. That's the least I can do for you.” She looked at me from head to toe.
That was more than enough, but she could do more. “Do you think you can ask him to release some funds for my company?” I asked, and the smile that was on her face quickly slipped away.
“You keep showing just how greedy you are. Heavens know how Anna didn't leave you alone all those years.”
I swallowed hard at the mention of her name. Sometimes, even I had the same thought. She thought she found her soulmate. She was stupid not to realize that her formula was being stolen from her.
Well, look how that backfired.
Somewhere in my head, I was considering what would have happened if I hadn't stolen her drug. Would we still have been in a relationship? Or would I still be looking for an opportunity to dump her and officially bring Melissa into my life?
Isabel searched her handbag one more time, before turning to face me.
“If there is anything else that we need to collaborate on in the future, you have my number. But for now, learn how to actually moan Melissa's name when you fuck her.”
With that, she pushed past me and headed out of the room.
