Chapter 10 Chapter 10. Refusing to Sever the Bond
Evander took a deep breath, gritting his teeth, as if wanting to crush his jaw. "Zephyr, after what you did to Zoria, do you still not feel enough guilt?"
Zephyr looked at Evander with sharp eyes. "That is between me and her. Even if I caused her death, it has nothing to do with you."
"You bastard!" Evander's eyes burned with fury.
Evander couldn't understand. Everhart had completely collapsed, and Zoria had lost all value to Zephyr, so why wouldn't he let go of her?
Zephyr looked at Evander, his gaze cold. "You're right. Even though Everhart has completely fallen, Zoria is still backed by your Valor family. But I don't know if Valor dares to take on the leftover trash from Everhart."
Evander clenched his fists, his bones creaking. He understood the meaning behind Zephyr's words. Kieran had been suspected of corruption and bribery and was imprisoned. Now, no one dared to take his assets for fear of being implicated.
As for Zephyr, it was different. No one in this city could do anything to him. This made Evander feel helpless and unwilling to accept it.
Zephyr looked at Evander mockingly, then shoved him aside and walked forward. "Don't worry. When Zoria wakes up, I'll take her to the Valor mansion to thank your parents."
At that moment, a few nurses entered the operating room, pushing Zoria out. Zephyr immediately saw her pale face, lifeless and drained of energy.
Zephyr stood still, watching as the nurses brought Zoria to the recovery room. After a long moment, he slowly entered the patient room and stood in front of Zoria. He gently touched her forehead, his fingertips trembling. Now, Zoria was like a fragile doll, a single touch could shatter her.
Had it been the blood loss that had drained her color so?
Zephyr looked toward Zoria's abdomen. A few hours ago, a little life had been growing inside her, but now that little life was gone.
A choking pain filled Zephyr's heart. He placed his hand on Zoria's forehead, unable to stop it from sliding down to gently caress her thin chin. Finally, his hand touched her pale lips.
Zoria had said that after donating bone marrow to Faye, she wanted to sever the bond with him. But sorry, Zoria, I’ve changed my decision.
Zoria didn’t know how long she had been unconscious. When she woke up, she found herself lying in a hospital room.
The smell of antiseptic rushed into her nose, causing Zoria to cough lightly. A sharp pain in her abdomen made her instinctively place her hand on her stomach. When she lifted her hand, a sudden pain shot through her, causing her to frown. On the back of her hand, two IV needles were connected to a transparent tube, which was dripping fluid into a bag.
The room was so quiet that Zoria could hear each drop of fluid falling from the IV tube. She tilted her head toward the door, hearing footsteps from outside. After a while, the door opened.
The nurse pushed a cart into the room, and upon seeing Zoria awake, her face lit up with joy.
"Miss Zoria, you're awake! Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?"
"No, could you help me sit up?" Zoria replied, her voice hoarse, barely able to produce sound. Perhaps because she had been unconscious for so long, her voice was very weak.
The nurse realized she wanted to sit up, so she went over, raised the bed, and gently changed the bandages for her.
As she changed the bandages, the nurse asked, "Miss Zoria, may I call Mr. Hawthorne to come see you?"
Zoria's body stiffened at the mention of Zephyr's name, and her heart still ached. She shook her head, thinking that if Zephyr came to the hospital, he would certainly go to see Faye, not her. So calling Zephyr to visit her would only bring more pain for her, wouldn't it?
The nurse sighed. Over the past days, everyone knew about Zoria's situation—how she had willingly donated bone marrow to Faye to save Zephyr’s love and almost dying on the operating table. The nurse didn’t understand the grudges of the upper class, but she truly felt sympathy for Zoria—a pitiful female.
The nurse quickly finished changing Zoria's bandages and gently reminded her that if she needed anything, she could press the red button next to the bed. As the nurse left the room, Zoria placed her hand gently on her stomach. Though the baby hadn’t moved yet, Zoria could still clearly feel the presence of the tiny life within her.
Her baby was fine, very safe. Once the bone marrow transplant was complete, she would sever the mate bond with Zephyr and leave this place, going to a quiet place to raise her child alone.
Zoria tried to think positively, her initial worries gradually replaced by calmness. After a while, the door to the room opened again. Zoria looked up, thinking it was Zephyr. But no, it was the maid from the mansion.
The maid entered with an impatient expression, holding a discarded thermos. Zoria looked behind her, and immediately the maid smiled falsely. "You didn't expect it to be me, did you?"
Zoria only gave her a glance and remained silent.
"The chef prepared some nutritional soup for Ms. Faye at Alpha's request, but Ms. Faye couldn't finish it. She felt sorry for you, so she asked me to bring you the leftover soup," the maid said as she placed the thermos on the table. She had intended to provoke Zoria, but after speaking, she saw that Zoria's expression remained unchanged.
The maid laughed lightly and continued to taunt, "Ms. Faye is ill, and Alpha is always by her side taking care of her. They must share deep love and should be together, right? How pathetic you are, having been Alpha's mate for three years, yet he still can't love you, and you couldn't even keep the child."
A flash of pain crossed Zoria's eyes. The maid immediately noticed the pain and smiled as though she had won. She snorted and walked out.
