Chapter 72 We need to talk
Jayden Park.
The next day, when I woke up, I smelled bacon and smiled because, despite finding it strange to be able to see the kitchen from the bedroom, it was fun to watch Rachel struggling with the frying pan that sometimes splattered grease all over the kitchen. She was so smart. Why didn't she think of using a lid? She was humming some low song, and her hair was tied up in a bun using her own hair to hold it, and I found that funny. When she took the frying pan off the fire, looking satisfied and did a little happy dance as she tasted the bacon, I laughed and leaned my right elbow on the bed to watch her.
When she finally noticed I was watching her, she smiled at me, and I wondered what I would have to do to have that every morning. For her to be the first thing I saw when I woke up. I lived in a mansion, with a family that avoided each other and walls perfectly decorated with paintings that cost more than this entire building, yet I felt much happier here and didn't feel like going back home. She approached with a plate full of scrambled eggs, some bacon slices, and pieces of cut papaya, handed me a glass of orange juice, and I smiled as I saw her sit across from me.
"I cooked, so you'll stop saying I let you starve," she explained with a pout, and I laughed because she paid attention to the drama I made the night before.
"Oh, so you were listening to me? I'll start complaining more often!" I joked, and she raised her eyebrows as if challenging me but ended up letting it go.
The TV in the living room was on, and I only noticed it when she repeated a line from some cartoon that was on, and I laughed while waiting for the food she made for me. Everything was delicious, and I think I've never eaten bacon slices so crispy as those. I didn't know what was more satisfying, the smell, the taste, or the sound as I chewed. After breakfast, we took a shower and were on our way to the university. I took her hand as we got out of the car, and I only realized we were walking hand in hand when she abruptly let go of my hand as Jasper appeared, and my smile faded.
I stepped back a bit to let them talk, albeit reluctantly. I don't know if I could hide my bad mood with the huge pout that formed on my lips, but at least I was trying. There was something that prevented me from punching Jasper just for breathing the same air as her. Rachel lit up when he was around. Her eyes sparkled, and her smile was so radiant that I could hardly breathe. There was nothing I wouldn't do for that smile to be directed at me, but it wasn't, and I was trying to learn to deal with it.
I saw Lexie coming towards me, and I sighed. I didn't want to have been so harsh on her yesterday, but at the same time, I knew she was playing with me, and I hated that. She was trying to test Finn's sexuality and wanted to use Rachel for it, but I wouldn't let anyone play with her, much less hurt her. I wanted to fulfill her request, and more than anything, I wanted to be the first to touch her body that way, but I knew Rachel was a labyrinth in which I got lost the first time I saw her, and sleeping with her would be like throwing away the compass.
I would lose myself inside her in so many ways that I think I would never find myself again, and that's a risk I can't take. I know my happiness with Rachel has an expiration date, and I try not to look at the calendar. I know that when she gets together with Jasper, I won't have a chance, and maybe he deserves her more than I do. His past isn't stained like mine, and she wouldn't have to face a problematic family like mine with him.
I was doing what was best for her, even if it hurt me so much. She flips her hair and looks away, smiling whenever he says something funny. How could he stay so close to her without being mesmerized by those mermaid eyes? I don't know why, but I constantly feel enchanted by her, and it's scary in a way I didn't know until I met her.
"Jayden, did you hear what I said?" Lexie asks, snapping her fingers near my ear, and I finally focus on the brunette.
"Hey, Lexie, what's up?" I asked curiously, and she sighed.
"We need to talk," she asserts with a heavy look in her eyes.
