Chapter 300: Unable to Be Ruthless
Chapter 300: Unable to Be Ruthless
It was already late at night, but the bedroom on the third floor of the Getty family's villa was still filled with chatter.
Rebecca clicked her tongue and sighed, "Tsk tsk tsk, James has totally got your soft heart figured out, Alice!"
No one knew better than Rebecca just how soft-hearted Alice really was.
She'd been that way since childhood.
Alice was five years older than Rebecca. When Rebecca was wobbling around learning to walk, Alice was already in elementary school.
While other elementary school kids spent weekends at parks, playgrounds, and libraries, Alice would take Rebecca around the neighborhood to dig in the dirt and catch butterflies instead.
As they grew up, Alice's heart and mind were completely filled with Layla and the Getty family.
Even when adults jokingly brought up dating and marriage, Alice would blush and say her future boyfriend had to be from Empire City—she wasn't going to marry far from home.
Rebecca had never seen how sharp and efficient Alice was at work.
But she'd heard her on work calls.
Clear-headed, with precise instructions.
In her daily work, she was definitely the type who worked hard and loved to learn.
Three years after graduating and joining the company, Alice, who studied finance, had climbed from a financial specialist all the way to CFO.
You have to understand, in any big company, the CFO position is always filled by either a direct family member of the boss or someone the boss deeply trusts.
But Alice was neither.
That really showed just what she was capable of.
The more they talked, the more excited and proud Rebecca got. Her mind filled with images of Alice's gentle nature from childhood to now, Rebecca hugged Alice's arm and gushed, "Alice, if I were a man, I'd like you !"
Alice laughed.
After starting work, she barely had any vacation time. Several holiday weekends in a row, she'd been on business trips and couldn't make it back.
Not only that, she didn't even get to see Henry one last time before he passed away, which made her feel guilty and blame herself whenever she thought about it.
Alice just wanted to spend more time with her family during this vacation.
But then, thinking about poor James looking so pitiful, she really couldn't bring herself to be harsh.
"Becca, what do you think I should do?"
Alice was really troubled.
When she turned around, she found Rebecca already fast asleep, her face all pink and puffy. Alice fell silent.
Even in her dreams, Rebecca was worrying about Alice. She dreamed she was standing at a fork in the road.
On one side was Frederick: "Becca, go be with Mom,, I'm fine."
On the other side was Alexa: "Becca, go be with Frederick, Mom's locked the door!"
The car sped away.
The iron gate clanged shut and locked.
Rebecca stood alone in the empty, desolate wilderness, looking around in confusion.
Where should she go?
She couldn't just stay at Pinewood Mansion all alone and miserable, could she?
"I don't want to!"
With a loud shout, Rebecca jolted awake from her dream.
She was alone in the bed—Alice had already gotten up.
When she went downstairs, she saw it had snowed at some point. Though just a thin layer, everything in sight was covered in white and looked beautiful.
In the yard, Alice was clearing snow with Alex.
By the floor-to-ceiling window, Alexa and Layla watched with smiles.
With her sharp ears catching the word "James," Rebecca changed direction and walked over. "Layla, if James became your son-in-law, would you be okay with that?"
